Following her fathers requirement, she doesnt pursue a career but work for the family restaurant where she meet Ian, a non-Greek man, for the first time and falls in love with him ,but her old look makes her unconfident to speak with him. From then on, she begin to change herself to pursue the love and finally she succeeds. however, her family expects her to marry a Greek boy, make Greek babies and “feed everyone until the day she dies”. Instead, Toula and Ian overcomes many obstacles brought by their cultural conflicts and Toulas family and get married in the end. The differences between Greek culture and American culture mainly lie in religious belief, social customs and social values. In terms of religions, the Orthodox Church is the state religion of Greece while Americans have a little religious awareness. In the film, Ian give up his own belief and become an orthodox to gain the acceptance from Toulas family. When selecting the wedding place, Ians parents have planned to hold it in a club, but accept with pleasure when they know Toulas parents select a church to hold their wedding out of devoutness. In the respect of social customs, there are numerous divisions within. When Greek people meet, they greet each other by kissing each other or a warm hug, so when Ians parents visit Toulas home, they feel surprised by their greeting behaviors. In the traditional Christmas Day, the Toula family roast the whole lamb and they think eating lamb eyes will make person smarter. However ,Americans have a different cerebrating way. As for the last part, we can easily know in the movie that Ians parents are so confused when seeing Toulas relatives spit to Toula in the wedding ceremony. Spitting in Greece represents blessing and protection against evil while in America and other countries, its a bad manner. Whats more, there is another tradition in Greece that the parents will send a present to their children in the wedding ,for example a big house in the film.The movie clearly shows us the cultural differences between America and Greece. As a matter of fact, its a common phenomenon when we communicate with foreigners. Different countries have different cultures, so we ought to have a proper attitude toward the divisions by mutual respect and mutual tolerance.专心-专注-专业
