You are what I dreamed of when I thought of being a mother. I had no idea the depth of my love for you until you were in arms!In a first few days, I noticed a little red mark on the left side of the bridge of your little nose. Every day it became more distinct and apparent. Finally, I realized it was a birthmark, and later our doctor confirmed that it was a hemangioma (血管瘤). I felt sure I had caused the birthmark and was very upset. To me, you were perfect, birthmark and all. You were a beautiful little girl who was perfectly healthyand for that I was grateful!Over the years, as you have grown into a bright and beautiful young lady, I have watched you change, but I have never lost sight of my goals as your mommy. My choices and decisions then and now have remained constant: I want the best out of life for you. My children are my most precious belongings, and I take seriously the responsibility of a parent. Although our family life has changed a lot over the years, my love for you will never change. I will always love you the sameand morethan I did the first time my arms wrapped around you.I have appreciated the help you have given meespecially over the last year as I have had to care for you and your brothers and sisters more and more as a single parent. I have done and will do my very best to guide you and help you. I will help you by sharing my personal life experiences. Life is always difficult, but it is how you choose to see it and handle the difficulties that matter most. Never compromise what you firmly believe in. Resist the urge to take the easy road. But does it also follow that, in each person, one side of the brain dominates(控制) the other and therefore causes each persons behavior? After the many decades of research, many scientists have begun to think otherwise. Now that these scientists know more about the brain, many now believe that the popular theories about “right-brain, left-brain” dominated behavior are most likely untrue. Until recently, the idea of left-brain dominated characteristics was still common belief among scientists. The idea went something like this: A person with a dominant right brain was generally seen as creative, intuitive, and artistic, a person who valued flexibility over stability. In contrast, a person whose left brain was dominant was seen to be a logical problem-solver, someone who used reason rather than emotions to solve problems, and who is good at using and learning language or mathematics. Right-brain and left-brain dominance was used to explain why we act the way we do. In the past, many scientists also thought that each of us displayed certain characteristics because one of our brain dominated the other. The idea started with scientific study of the 1800s. Scientists found that an injury to one side of the brain, with language in the left. Scientists then concluded that two sides of the brain functioned independently. But in todays scientific community, most experts now believe that the two sides of the brain do not work independently. Recent brain-scan technology has showed that the roles of each side of the brain are, in fact, complementary(互补的). Scientists like Joseph Hellige, a psychologist at the University of Southern California, now think that two sides of the brain work together. Hellige found that language processing, once believed to occur only in the left side of the brain, actually takes place in both sides. The brains left side processes grammar and pronunciation while the right side processes intonation. Similarly, Helliges experiments show that the right side of the brain dies not work independently on spatial ability. The right side deals with a general sense of space, and the left deals with objects in specific locations. Researchers are struggling to understand the mysteries of the brain and to separate its myths and facts. With time and technology, they will know more about how the brain affects individual differences in personality. For now, scientists conclude that the idea of right-brain or left-brain dominance is probably too simple to be true.23. According to the previous theories, people who rely more heavily on the right half brain tend to be_. A. good at math and motivated B. good at painting and flexible C. good at problem solving and creative D. good at language study and organized24. The scientific study of the 1800s shows_. At the station, Papa and Mama hid behind bales of hay in boxcar to my right. My two giant brothers, Nathan and Saul, crouched in separate cars to my left. Papa said that we should hide in different cars. If the guards discovered only one of us, perhaps the others might still escape. I would have liked to fly away, to race back up the road, stopping at every door to stay good-bye, to say that we were going to America. But I could not. Papa said we must tell no one we were leaving. As Papa expected, not long after we had hidden, two guards emerged from a wooden shelter. They thundered down the platform in their heavy boots in and out of the cars, making their search. I think the guards missed seeing me at first because they were so busy in their search of the train. They were searching for Nathan. When a Jewish boy deserts the Russian Army, the army tries hard to find him. They bring him back and kill him in front of his fellow soldiers as a warning to the others. Those who have helped him, they also die. Late last night, when Nathan slipped away from his regiment and appeared at our door, joy filled my heart at seeing my favorite brother again. Yet a troubled look worried Nathans face. He hugged me only for a moment. His smile vanished as quickly as it came. “Ive come,” he said, “two warm Saul. The soldiers will soon fellow. They will take him into the army.” I am ashamed to admit that at first hearing Nathans news made me glad. I wanted Saul gone. He drives me crazy. From his big car to his big feet, I cannot stand the sight of him. Good riddance, I thought. How foolish I was not to understand what Nathans news really meant to our family. “You should not have come,” Mama said Nathan. “They will shoot you when you return.” Papa said, “Nathan isnt going to return. Hurry! We must pack!” We all stared at him. “Quickly,” Papa said, clapping his hands, “Rifka, run and fill your rucksack with all of your belongings, “I do not know what Papa thought I owned. Mama said, “Rifka, do you have room in your bag for our candlesticks?” “The candlesticks, Mama?” I asked. “We either take them, Rifka, or leave them to the greedy peasants. Soon enough they will break in to pack our house bare,” Mama said. Papa said it was time to leave Russia and we were not coming back ever. We huddled in the cellar through the black night, planning our escape. I suddenly understood what the guards said meant. They were talking about Nathan. They were saying what they would do to him once they found him, and what they would do to anyone who had helped him. Nathan hid under a stack of burlap bags, one boxcar away from me. I knew, no matter how frightened I was, I must not let them find Nathan.Questions 26 to 30. Judge if the following statements agree with the information given in the passage.
