These are areas of great natural beauty that are protected by the United States government. More than three hundred fifty national parks can be found in the United States. Today we will visit four of them - all in the state Of Utah. These parks include huge colored rock formations(岩屋), rivers, waterfalls, beautiful trees, other plants and many different kinds of wild animals. Arches National Park is near the town of Moab in eastern Utah. Experts say this park has the greatest number of arches of any similar geographic area in the world. Arches are formations that look like half a circle above an opening or hole in a rock. Arches can also appear as curved bridges between two large rocks. Canyonlands National Park is a wild, lonely area of rocks, rivers and desert plants. Only Native Americans, cowboys, and explorers entered this area before the park was established in nineteen sixty-four. Even today, it is difficult to walk or ride through the park. The roads are still made of dirt. Driving requires a special vehicle. The National Park Service says Canyonlands National Park is wild America. Bryce Canyon National Park is in southern Utah. The rock formations there are the result of deposits (沉淀物) made by ancient lakes and rivers over a period of about twenty million years. The walls and cliffs of Bryce Canyon once were completely covered with water. The fourth and final park we will visit today is Zion National Park. It is not far from Bryce. But it is very different. I am a sophomore studying in Rome, Italy with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). Now we are in Florence for our three-week visit and I am having an amazing time! I left John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday, January 15, 2009. First, I traveled to London which was quite an experience. To be exact, I am used to big cities. I am used to watching my purse and taking care of myself. London also had a lot of the same products that we can find in America. I stayed in a Holiday Inn so things really were not all that different for me, except for the accent and currency. When I arrived in Italy that Friday, the 18th, I slowly began to understand the meaning of culture shock. Suddenly, I was in an area where everyone knew what to do and what to say and I had absolutely no idea. Now I do understand and speak Italian, but not like a true Italian from Italy. Europeans have their own way of doing things and all of a sudden, I was a foreigner among people who looked exactly like me. The worst part of the whole first day was that I knew exactly what I wanted to say but was too nervous to speak to them; I was afraid of messing up what I wanted to say. Having been here a week already, I have felt as though this is my home. Studying abroad is very different from living away from home at college. At least in America I can get shaving cream and my favorite breakfast cereal. Here in Italy I have to settle for their products and their way of doing things. I'm used to everything being open from at least 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., maybe 10 p.m. if you are lucky, but here the shops close every single day at around 1 p.m. and re-open at 2:30 p.m. And the time difference! Italy is six hours ahead of the New York, so talking to friends and family is a challenge. However, it was a little difficult at first but it gets easier every day. Once you feel comfortable about it, you have got the first step for settling down.1. How do I feel the life here in Italy? A. difficult and boring B. interesting but dangerousC. hard but rewarding D. similar but happy2. I thought "I was a foreigner among people" mainly because of_.A. my different ways of doing things B. my different looks C. my different living habits D. my different accent3. Which place do I come from?A. London B. Florence C. Rome D. New York4. Which of the following is NOT TRUE? A. I couldn't speak Italian when I first arrived here in Florence. B. In America the shops usually open from 8 a.m. to 9p.m. C. London was my first destination after I left America.D. I have another two weeks to stay in Florence.5. What is the best title for this article?A. Studying abroad - a great experience B. Italy is the best place for visiting C. It's too difficult to study abroad D. The difference between the lives in America and ItalyD. Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage. 6% Many
