Heather Santeliano, 36, was driving her white 2012 Mazda on Houston Harte Frontage Road with her nine-year-old daughter and ten-year- old son in the back. Suddenly, a red pickup truck cut them off. Santellano turned the wheel hard to the right, sending the Mazda skidding off the road and down an embankment(堤)that ended in a drop-off after about 50 feet. If the car didnt stop, it would go airborne and plunge onto the road some 20 feet below. Then a bit of luck: As the car raced toward the edge, its undercarriage got stuck on the cement lip of the embankment ledge, stopping it cold. The occupants, however, were far from safe. The car had come to rest on top of a retaining wall, literally teetering(摇摇欲 fir) on the edge of disaster. One sudden move by anyone inside could send it over. Jacob Rodriguez watched the scene unfold from the Truck Repair Plant where he works. Then he and four other men ran to the car. They leaped onto the trunk to balance the weight as the terrified kids in the back seat watched. Meanwhile, Julio Vasquez and his nephew, Marco Vasquez, were driving to their jobs at nearby Premier Automotive, Julio jumped out of the car to help while Marco went to the shop, grabbed a heavy-duty strap(皮;带),and returned to the swinging car. He fastened the Mazda to an F-350 truck that had been driven over by one of the other rescuers. With the car secured, the group carefully opened the back doors and helped the children out. But their departure shifted the cars weight, causing it to lean forward. The men, still on the trunk, asked Santellano to jump into the back seat to rebalance the weight. She did and then Inched out the back door. Finally, the men carefully got off the trunk. Everyone was safe.24. What do we know about Heather Santellano?A. What is the most critical in the rescue process?A. Balance.B.Cooperation.C.Calmness.D,Gravity.27. Which of the following statements is consistent with the theme of the passage?A.Persistence will pay off. B.One in trouble, ali to help,C.Many hands make light work.D.Love makes the world go round.C A dove rested on a telephone wire. Ready for takeoff, it raises its wings, springs into the air and flaps away. This series of actions is so common that you probably do not pay it much attention. But University of Manchester biomechanical engineer Ben Parslew does. He is trying to design robots that can jump like birds. Most conventional robots roll around on wheels, limiting mobility. There is a need for more agile robots that “can jump over obstacles in messy environments,” Parslew says. To design such a machine, he turned to nature: “Birds are really good jumpers”he notes. The trouble is, when birds start to take off, they lean so far forward that they should tip over and fall onto their beaks(p彖).Yet that does not happen. Parslew and his team used computer modeling to discover how birds avoid this fate. They discovered that birds twist their bodies slightly towards the back while accelerating into a jump. They also have flexible legs and toe joints, which prevent them from taking off briefly and immediately crashing into the ground. The results were published last October in Royal Society Open Science. Parslew thinks engineers can use this infonnation to design robots that can not only jump well but also launch into flight more efficiently. University of Southern California biomechanist Michael Habib, who was not involved in the study, says springs and levers (杠杆)enable more rapid acceleration than wheels do. And many animals are masters of springs and levers. “If you can understand how that works,”Habib adds, “you can build a robot thats good at running around and good at flying, and it will also be good at taking off suddenly in all kinds of conditions and landing on a dime.” Parslew is now designing such a robot, as an alternative to wheeled rovers for exploring other planets.28. What is right about the dove mentioned in Paragraph 1?A.It takes off very beautifully.B.It gives Ben Paislew inspiration.C.It catches everyones attention D.It raises Ben Parslew's curiosity.29.What can we-infer about the traditional robots?A.They cant jump over barriers.B.They cant detect barriers before them.C.They can only move in one direction.D.They cant adapt to complex environments.30.How does a bird avoid falling when taking off?A.By getting rid of gravity.B.By spinning its body backward.C.By flapping its wings hard.D.By jumping into the air quickly.31.What is the main idea of the text?A. Birds provide inspiration for humans.B. New robots that can jump have been created.C.The development of robots benefits space exploration.D.Studying birdsjumping helps scientist build better robots.D Few people, these days would disagree with the theory that its vital to take time for yourself. Creating some space for enjoyment and restoration each day or at least every week, is a win-win proposal: it'll make you both happier and more effective in fiilfilling your responsibilities at work and home. In practice, it rarely happens, though. For some, thats because deep down they feel they don't deserve it. For others, it's simply that busy life makes it seem impossible to press pause. Either way, making sure you actually gel a moment to yourself requires a shift in perspective. Dont wait until it feels right. It's unpleasant to have unfinished tasks bothering at your mind, so it's tempting to tell yourself you11 only relax once everything is under control. But since both work and family life generate an infinite number of todos5 that strategy is doomed to failure. As time-management writer Laura Vanderkam points out, it's far more useful to learn to tolerate the discomfort of knowing your email inbox is tilling up, or that the living room is still a pigsty. Choose true enjoyment. It's all too easy to fill time with things you think you should enjoy, above all exercise. If you genuinely love such activities, they're perfect. But if the truth is that you don't,you'll only get resentM: we rebel against being told what to do, even when the person doing the telling is ourselves. Make sure at least a small part of your week is spent doing something you can honestly say you enjoy for itself. Pay attention to good feelings. Once you do get some restorative time, borrow a Buddhist technique for making it count: when you realize youre enjoying yourself, spend half a minute consciously paying attention to the feelings of pleasure. For one thing, you'll often find that those feelings increase as a result. For another, youll encode the memory of the experience in more detail - so, looking back, it'll feel like you had even more time to yourself.32.Why is it hard for some people to find time for themselves practically?A.They think they arent worth itB.Theyhavealotofpressure.C.They are in financial trouble.D. They cant spare any time33. Which of the following is acceptable according to Paragraph two?A.
