B In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品 ) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. Its clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image. I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit-I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I dont understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, thats a scary thing. Whats interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesnt lead 名师归纳总结 精品学习资料 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -精心整理归纳 精选学习资料 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 第 2 页,共 7 页 - - - - - - - - - 第 5 页本试卷共14 页第 6 页本试卷共14 页to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we dont suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That s because experiences are more easily integrated into a persons identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me. Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things ” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences. It s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You dont have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look. 25. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs? A. The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself. B. The author agrees to spend money on material things. C. The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels. D. The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends. 26. Leaf Van Bovens studies showed that _. A. traveling changes a persons identity greatlyB. people dislike those who love luxuries C. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries D. luxuries have a negative effect on peoples happiness 27. What is the a uthor s advice on expressing oneself?A. Be selective about designer labels. B. Create your own personal unique style. C. Choose styles that are simple and comfortable. D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerbergs.28. The main purpose of the article is to _. A. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries B. prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life C. tell how to express yourself through appearances D. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness C John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas city in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching the high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.Fortunately, he had a strong-willed caring mother. John remembered that his mother told him many times, “Son, you can be anything you want really to be if you just believe.”She told him not to depend on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success, ”she said. “All the people who work hard dont succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”These words came from a woman with less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work dont mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son, who was then 15, to Chicago.Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for. Johns mother and stepfather could not find work. But here John could go to school, and here he learned the power of wordsas an editor of the newspaper and yearbook at Du Sable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks. While others discouraged him, Johns mother offered him more words to live by.“Nothing beats a failure but a try. ” She also let him pawn( 典当)her furniture to get the $ 500 he needed to start the Negro magazine. It is natural that difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother s words in mind. “Son, failure is not in your vocabulary! ”Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in Americaworth $ 150 million.29. This question has been stumping both animal experts and zebra fans all over the world for centuries. But now it appears that some researchers in California may have finally solved the age-old mystery! Over the years, there have been many theories-Some believed that it was purely accidental and caused by interbreeding (杂交), while others thought it was to confuse predators( 食肉动物 ). Then there were the speculations that the stripes probably helped with camouflage (伪装), keeping the animals cool in the blazing African sun and last but not least, scaring away the troubling flies that always seem to be around. But no one had ever tried to prove any of the theories, with scientific research. Determined to solve this age-old mystery, a team of scientists led by, Tim Caro, professor of Wildlife Biology at the University of California, Davis, set to work. They began by comparing the thickness, location, and the stripes on seven species of zebras that live in various geographic locations. They then examined what forces of nature, each one had to battle-ranging from natural predators to temperature to the small insects like flies, which they may be constantly subjected to. To their amazement, the only factor that connected with the stripes was the biting flies. The zebras with the most prominent ( 突出的) and largest number of stripes, mostly inhabited areas with more flies. But that led to another question : why are zebras the only one smart enough to develop the stripes? After all, there are plenty of other animals like horses and donkeys, which are subjected to the same trouble. Upon closer examination of the black and white animals, the researchers noticed that unlike the others, zebras have very short coats of hair, making them particularly susceptible (易受影响的 ) to getting bitten by the flies! While Tim, who published his findings in the online journal, Nature Communications, on April 1st, says that this mystery is finally solved, it has given rise to a new one. Why are these fearless flies who have no qualms( 不安) attacking animals that are thousand of times bigger, afraid of black and white stripes? If you have any theories, be sure to add it to the comments below. It may help the professor with his next question ! 32.What does the underlined word “stumping” in the first paragraph most probably mean?A. Surprised. B. Excited. C. Puzzled. D. Disappointed. 33. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us? A. People have different ideas about why zebras have stripes. B. Zebras stripes are used to confuse predators.C. Experts are trying to prove the ideas with scientific research. D. The stripes of zebras are the result of interbreeding. 34. What surprised the scientists was that _. A. the stripes have something to do with biting flies. B. zebras live where there are more flies C. the stripes are determined by the location D. stripes vary depending on zebras species35. Why are zebras easy to bite by flies? A. Because their stripes stand out. B. Because their hair is short. C. Because their colors appeal to flies. D. Because they cant defend themselves.第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Everyone can benefit from making an effort to practice gratitude (感激) every day.
