Its a difficult question to answer. In fact, as long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible. Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity. It can be seen and observed. Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher fulfil them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading. 1 According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when _. A. reading enriches childrens experienceB. teacher and learner roles are interchangeableC. teaching helps children in the search for knowledgeD. children become highly motivated 2. The instruction of reading will be successful if . A. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of readingB. teachers can improve conditions at school for the studentsC. teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD. teachers can make their teaching activities observable3. The underlined word “scrutiny most probably means “ . A. inquiryB. suspicionC. controlD. observation 4. The main idea of the passage is that _. A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC. reading is more complicated than generally believedD. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught BWherever you go, there you are. This is the title of a fantastic book by JonKabat Zinn. Often when going through a difficult time, some think about making a major change, a change of a job or residence. Will this really help? Of course if you are being abused or stressed, such action may work. But for the most part, if we change nothing about ourselves, we merely take what is inside of us wherever we wander. In therapy(心理疗法), I have seen individuals who have literally taken geographic treatment, making a major change out of their city or state. What was most discovered was that at first, the change was fun and exciting. But after a period of time, after the “newness wore off they still saw people as they had seen them before. If they felt taken advantage of, they still felt that way. If they had low self-esteem, they felt the same way.Is there an answer to this problem? Work on yourself first. In 12-step programs, we say no major changes for a year. That is because people need to see who they really are without their addiction. And it takes about a year to give up your system and to find out who you really are emotionally.Taking some time to clearly focus and see what the real issues are is very important. A quick change without any forethought is often merely an escape from reality. And remember, happiness is an inside job.5. According to the author, you can change your job if _.A. you are going through difficult times B. you are ill-treated or stressedC. you dont want to change yourself D. you want to live a new life6. By saying “happiness is an inside job, the author really means that _.A. happiness remains inside wherever you goB. you cant find happiness even if you change your job or residenceC. you can't find happiness unless you change the inside of yourselfD. giving up your addiction can lead to happiness7. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Work on Yourself First B. Dont Change Your Job or Residence in a HurryC. Dont Escape From Reality D. Join in 12-step Programs and Give up Your SystemCWe are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it. Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed no examination is perfect but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in school or on teachers. This would mean everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher. Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his schools reputation, unable to compete for employment with the child from the favored school. The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer. 8. The word “ favoritism in paragraph 3 is used to describe the phenomenon that_.A. bright children also need certificates to get satisfying jobs.B. children from well-respected schools tend to have good jobs.C. poor children with certificates are favored in job markets.D. children attending ordinary schools achieve great success.9. What would happen if examinations were taken away according to the author?A. Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.B. There would be more opportunities and excellence.C. Children from poor families would be able to change their schools.D. Childrens job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation.10. The opponents of the examination system will agree that_.A. jobs should not be assigned by systematic selectionB. computers should be selected to take over many jobsC. special classes are necessary to keep the school standardsD. schools with academic subjects should be done away with11. The passage mainly focuses on _.A. schools and certificates B. examinations and equalityC. opportunity and employment D. standards and reputation12. The underlined word “reputation means _.A. successful achievement B. good title C. strict management D. fame四、 阅读表达Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansions guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things arent always what they seem. The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good nights rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.
