    William-Faulkner-ppt(1).ppt

About the authorWilliam Faulkners life William Faulkner(1897-1962)was born on September 25, 1897 in New Albany,Mississippi ,and began to write poetry as a teenager. He attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford before and after his service in the Royal Canadian Air Force in World I. His literary career began in New Orleans where he met Sherwood Anderson, who helped him get his first novel Soldiers Pay published in 1926. The work which won Faulkner a Nobel Prize in 1950 is often a depiction of life in his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, an imaginative reconstruction of the area adjacent to Oxford.Literature Contribution The Mirble Faun (1924)云石牧神云石牧神 a volume of poetry Soldiers Pay (1926) 士兵的报酬士兵的报酬 first novel Sartoris (l929)萨托里斯萨托里斯 see and feel the dignity and sorrow of what was to become his most frequently used subject matter The Sound and the Fury (1929)喧哗与骚动喧哗与骚动 As I Lay Dying (l930)我弥留之际我弥留之际 Light in August (l932)八月之光八月之光 Absalom, Absalom (1936)押沙龙!押沙龙!押沙龙!押沙龙! Go Down, Moses (1942) 去吧,摩西去吧,摩西 A Rose for Emily 献给艾米丽的玫瑰献给艾米丽的玫瑰 Faulkner received the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel. The Sound and the Fury The Sound and the Fury is a tale /Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,/Signifying nothing. There is enough despair and nihilism but much love and emotion in this sad story of Compsons. It tells a story of deterioration from the past to the present. The past is ideailzed to form a striking contrast with the loveless present. There is in the book an acute feeling of nostalgia toward the happy past.Themes (1) History and race He explains the present by examining the past, by telling the stories of several generations of family to show how history changes life. He was interested in the relationship between blacks and whites, especially concerned about the problems of the people who were of the mixed race of black and white, unacceptable to both races. (2) Deterioration (3) Conflicts between generations, classes, races, man and environment (4) Horror, violence and the abnormal Writing Style Syntax The most noticeable feature of Faulkners style, in Barn Burning and elsewhere, is his syntax or sentence structure. Faulkners sentences tend to be long, full of interruptions, but work basically by stringing out seemingly meandering sequences of clauses. Stream of consciousness of human nature Multiple narrators Time bend without linear chronological time sequence - best medium into the exploration - ensure the maximum revelation of human possibilities. “Anti-hero”: weak, vulnerable (true people in modern society) Social Significance Faulkner has been considered Americas greastest novelist to came out of the twentieth century. The best of his fiction, which deal with basic human nature and basic pattern of human behavior, rank among the most enduring works of world literature. In writing about his land aboutman in the ageless, eternal struggles,Faulkner speaks for both his people and hunanity, and becomes as timeless and spaceless as his stories. He was one of the winner of Nobel Prize.Influnced By : He was influnced by himself. On: 1 He has a group of women writers following him, including OConnor and Eudora Welty. 2 The writers of Latin America
