Lightning strikes are the second most common cause of deaths during natural disasters in the US. The first is floods. Around 400 people nationwide are struck by lightning each year, and of those, 70 people die. That is, more people are killed by lightning than by tornadoes and hurricanes. Because lightning kills only one or two people at a time, its danger does not receive as much attention as other disasters. "If you hear the thunder, you are in danger from lightning," said Rocky Lopes, a disaster educator at the American Red Cross. "Thunder means that lightning is close enough to hit you at any time, so you should move indoors immediately and stay there until the storm has ended. The most important thing to remember is to seek shelter, " Lopes said. Summer is the peak time for lightning storms, so when lightning strikes across the sky, remember these safety tips: Stop working, fishing, swimming or playing in open fields. Do not stand under a tree. Get off bicycle and motorcycles. Crouch down (蹲下) if there is no shelter. Avoid open spaces, wire fences, metal objects and electrical objects such as hair driers. 26. The Danger of Lightning B. Some Safety Tips against Floods C. How Lightning Happens D. 5 People Killed by Lightning in NepalB Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them. Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it. People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behaviour. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of conflict between hunters and hunt saboteurs (怠工者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with (阻碍) the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow. Noisy conflicts between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labor Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain. 31. Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes _. It can be inferred from the passage that _. A. killing foxes with poison is illegal B. limiting the fox population is unnecessary C. hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violent D. fox-hunting often leads to conflicts between the poor and the richC When 7-year-old Warren Buffett said,“I will be the richest man one day, his friends made fun of his “daydreaming. But ever since then the little boy has set about learning how to make money by selling drinks, delivering newspapers and buying stocks. The American had already earned $9,000 (equal to $90,000 today) by the time he graduated from high school. And this month the 78-year-old man, who earned his fortune by making a lot of sound investment in the stock market, took the place of Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, as the worlds richest man. Gates worth declined $1.5 billion to $55.5 billion in 33 days after the recent financial storm, according to Forbes Magazine. Buffett, the only son of a stockbroker, was ready to think outside the box to develop his business from a very early age. At 8, he went to golf courses collecting and selling the used balls. At 11 when he sold soda pop door-to-door with a friend, the pair collected lids on streets to judge which flavor was the most popular. As a paper boy during high school, Buffett delivered two competitor papers, so that even when customers canceled one of the subscriptions, he could still make a profit from the other. With his paper delivery savings, Buffett bought 162,000 square meters of farmland and collected rent. Young Buffett stepped into the stock market at 11 but earned only $5. The experience taught him one of the virtues in investing, patience. After graduating from university, Buffett started his venture with stocks with his childhood earnings and money from friends. He researched the stocks and just bought those of solid companies that were undervalued and inexpensive at the time. By sticking to companies such as American Express and Coca-Cola, Buffett has become rich. “Learning is important to Buffetts success. He is a learning machine who can spend his entire day reading. He keeps learning from books, street smarts and investigation, from both success and failure. In this way, he over-achieved his aptitude (能力). said Charlie Munger, his longtime business partner. 36. Buffett and Gates are business partners.C. His father helped him a lot in his business.D. Buffett has a good sense of business.DQuit while you're ahead I am one of those people who are terrible at saying no. I take on too many projects at once, and spend too much of my time doing things I'd rather not be doing. I get stuff done, but it's not always the best I can do, or the best way I could spend my time. That's why my newest goal, both as a professional and a person, is to be a quitter. Being a quitter isn't being someone who gives up, who doesn't see important things through to the end. I aspire (渴望) to be the opposite of that. The quitter I want to be is someone who gets out when there's no value in what he's doing, or when that value comes at the expense of something more important. A friend of mine once told me: "I knew I was an adult when I could stop reading a book, even after getting 500 pages into it." Odd though it sounds, we all tend to do this. We get involved in something, realize we don't want to be a part of it, but keep on going. We say "Well, I've already invested so much time in this, I might as well stick it out." I propose the opposite: quit as often as possible, regardless of project status or time invested. If you're reading a book, and don't like it, stop reading. Cut your losses, realize that the smartest thing to do is to stop before your losses grow even more, and quit. Instead of reading an entire book you hate, read half of a bad one and half of a good one. Isn't that a better use of your time? Step back for a second. Let's learn how to say "no" at the beginning, or in the middle, and free up more of our time to do the things we'd like to be doing, and the things actually worth doing. Saying no is hard, and admitting a mistaken yes is even harder. Both if we do both, we'll start to make sure that we're spending our time creating value, rather than increasing our losses. Let's be quitters together.41. The author
