Charley was the son of Amos Colley, a farmer and his wife, Sarah. When the Civil War broke out,Charley was the first to join the Northern army.A year or so after he volunteered for the army he got badly wounded in a battle.Soon he died from the wounds in Virginia.Amos and Sarah were told that their sons body would be shipped home for burial. One October day a rough pine coffin arrived. The box was opened.Sarah was the first to look inside. Her face grew pale and her hand flew to her mouth, for the body she gazed upon was the body of a stranger. He was a fairhaired boy, dressed in confederate gray, the uniform of the enemy.A search through his clothing gave them no further information. What to do? To attempt to return the strangers body to Virginia seemed useless and somehow cruel. There was just one thing to doto bury it.But where? Outside the town in some unknown spot? Sarah refused to do that. The stranger had been loved by someone; he had given his life, as Charley had, for a cause he believed right. He should have a decent burial in the towns cemetery. And so it was done.A week later a coffin containing Charleys body arrived. In his uniform of Union blue he was laid to rest only a few yards from where the stranger lay.The war ended. Each year, on Memorial Day,the town people put flowers and flags on the graves of their honored death. They also honor the stranger, the confederate soldier known only to God. 1How did Charley die?He died from the wounds in a battle.2How was the stranger dealt with?He was buried in the towns cemetery.Section Warming Up,Prereading & Reading. 海滩()2.last Bn. 1At one point I thought she was going to refuse, but in the end she agreed. 2It rained heavily. As a result, we had to put off the sports meeting. 3The bus stops regularly to set down and pick up passengers. 4The meeting was far from being a success; its a failure. 5Scientists have made a breakthrough in cancer research. 6The people in the mountainous areas have declared war on poverty. 答案16AEDFCBThe DDay LandingsPassage 1In September 1939, Britain declared war on Germany after Germany invaded Poland. The most important battle of the war in Europe was Operation Overlord, the military operation(行动) in 1944 to invade France.D日登陆文章11939年9月,英国在德国入侵波兰后向德国宣战。 The war。Operation Overlord started when boats full of soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy in France, known as the DDay landings. More than 5,000 ships crossed the English Channel, carrying 130, 000 troops to the French coast. Troops from the United States, Britain and Canada took part in the DDay landings. The operation was extremely dangerous and many soldiers were killed before they even got off the boats. American soldiers attempted to land at the most dangerous place, known as Omaha Beach. The situation at Omaha Beach was so bad that the US army commanders(指挥官) thought about abandoning the invasion. Eventually, the soldiers made a breakthrough and the DDay landings were successful. It was the beginning of the end of the Second World War.Operation Overlord started as a story of danger and confusion and ended as a story of bravery and acts of heroism.(英雄主义)美国、英国和加拿大的军队参加了D日登陆。 known as .为过去分词短语作定语,相当于定语从句which is known as .,修饰先行词the most dangerous place。此处是so . that . The DDay LandingsPassage 2The soldiers of Able Company crossed the English Channel in seven boats early on the morning of 6 June 1944. When they were about 5 kilometres from the beach, the Germans started firing artillery(大炮) shells(炮弹) at them but the boats were too far away. The Germans continued firing and Boat 5 was hit one kilometre from the beach. Six men drowned(淹死) before help arrived. Twenty men fell into the water and were picked up by other boats. As a result, they missed the fighting on the beach. They were lucky. If they had reached the beach, they would probably have been killed.D日登陆文章21944年6月6日清晨,A连的战士们乘坐七艘战船横渡英吉利海峡。 When Boat 3 was a few metres from the beach, the soldiers jumped out, but the water was so deep that some of them disappeared under the water. Many of the men were either killed or wounded(使受伤) by machine gun fire. The soldiers on Boat l and Boat 4 jumped into the water, but it was too deep and most of them drowned. Half an hour after the first attack, two thirds of the company(a company is a group of about 100 soldiers) were dead. The survivors(幸存者) lay on the beach, exhausted and shocked. After an hour and fortyfive minutes, six of the survivors tried to climb up the cliff to get off the beach. Four were too exhausted to reach the top. The other two, Private(士兵) Jake Shefer and Private Thomas Lovejoy, joined a group from another company and fought with them. Two men. Two rifles. This was Able Companys contribution to DDay. 此处为too . to . The DDay LandingsPassage 3On 6 June 2004, survivors of the DDay landings from many different countries returned to France to remember their lost comrades. Many of them went to the cemetery and memorial(纪念碑) which overlooks Omaha Beach. The cemetery and memorial are situated on a cliff overlooking the beach and the English Channel, from where the boats attempted their landings. The cemetery contains the graves(墓穴) of 9,386 Americans who died during the landings. The memorial also contains the names of more than 1,500 men who were never found. On the memorial, there is part of a poem called “For the Fallen”, which was written by an English poet, Lawrence Binyon:They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary(使人厌烦) them. Nor the years condemn(责难)At the going down of the sun and in the morningWe will remember them. The poem was first published in The Times newspaper on 14 September 1914 and can be seen on war memorials in many parts of the world.D日登陆文章32004年6月6日,来自不同国家的D日登陆幸存者们回到法国,纪念他们阵亡的战友。 called “For the Fallen”为过去分词短语作定语,修饰part of a poem;which was written by an English poet为which引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词“For the Fallen”。 1Passage.1ADescribing the memory for the DDay landings2Passage.2 BIntroducing the reason of the DDay landings3Passage.3 CTelling us the history of a company called Able Company答案13BCA第二步细读把控文章关键信息细读P7273教材课文,选择最佳答案1Operation Overlord refers to a battle that AGermans tried to land on the French beaches to invade FranceBthe British helped the Polish to fight against GermansCthe French fought against Germans on the beaches of NormandyDthe Allies(同盟国) tried to land on the French beaches against Germans2From the passage,we know took the most dangerous task in the DDay landings.ACanadian troopsBBritish troopsCAmerican troops DFrench troops3From Passage 2 ,we know that soldiers of Able Company were either killed or drowned during the landings.Aabout one hundred Btwenty or soCexactly twentysix Dmore than sixty4When the Germans started firing at the boats, Athe boats were one kilometre from the beachBthe boats drownedCthe boats suffered great damageDthe boats were so far from the beach that they werent hit5Passage 3 is intended to Atell us not to forget those who lost their lives in the DDay landingsBintroduce a famous British poem to usCdescribe how the French beaches became a famous attractionDtell us the importance of the DDay landings答案15DCDDA第三步研读能力升华接轨高考根据P7273教材课文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式Do you know the phrase of DDay?
