But, as we cant drink seawater, how can it be important? Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important seawater is! Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced. The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didnt matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true, and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop. Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats. Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans, and new techniques are being pioneered to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important seawater is! 1Which of the following is the proper order of the food chain? Asmall animalsalgae microscopic animalslarge animalsman Balgae microscopic animalslarge animalslarger animalsman Csmall animalsalgae large animalsmicroscopic animalsman Dmicroscopic animalsalgae large animals larger animalsman 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 1 页,共 13 页 - - - - - - - - - - 2 - 2From the passage, we learn that_. Amost fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas Bit is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain Cexcessive fishing has caused the decrease in fish stock Dit wont be long before the problems concerning oceans will be solved 3Which of the following is NOT a way being used to protect oceans? AThe use of international agreements. BForbidding fishing to protect fish stocks. CThe use of new techniques. DRaising peoples awareness of the need to protect oceans. 4What would be the best title of the passage? AThe importance of seawater BLife in the oceans CHow to protect food chains DHow to deal with seawater pollution BSome scientists say that animals in the oceans are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves. Decibels (分贝 ) measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect. Some scientists have suggested setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in the oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales (鲸鱼 ). A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected (被感染的 ). 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 2 页,共 13 页 - - - - - - - - - - 3 - Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds are against a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists dont think that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean. 5According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures? AThe sound of cars. BThe sound of voices. CMan-made noise pollution. DThe sound of steps. 6 According to the passage, natural sounds include all of the following EXCEPT_. Asounds made by animals themselves Bocean drilling Cunderwater earthquakes Dthe breaking of ice fields 7Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph? AThe same noise level produces a different effect on land and in the ocean. BDifferent places may have different types of noises. CThe decibel is not a right unit (单位 ) for measuring underwater noise. DDifferent ocean animals may have different reactions to noises. 8According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future? AThey will work hard to reduce ocean noise pollution. BThey will protect animals from harmful noises. CThey will try to set a limit of 120 decibels. DThey will study the effect of ocean noise pollution. C Futurologists (未来学家 ) predict that life will probably be very different in 2050. TV channels will have disappeared. Instead, people will choose a program from a “menu ” and a computer will send the programme directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read newspaper stories and see pictures on a computer thousands of kilometers away. By 2050, music, films, programs, newspapers, and books will come to us by computer. Cars will run on new, clean fuels and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed and there wont be any accidents. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to your destination. Space planes will take people halfway around the world in 2 hours. Today, the United States Space Shuttle can go into space and land on Earth again. By 2050, space planes will fly all over the world and people will fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo in just two hours. Robots will have replaced people in factories. Many factories already use robots. Big companies prefer robots they dont ask for pay rises or go on strikes, and they work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes. Medical technology will have conquered many diseases. Today, there are electronic devices that connect directly to the brain to help people hear. By 2050, we will be able to help blind and deaf people to see and hear again. Scientists will have discovered how to control genes. Scientists have already produced clones of animals. By 2050, scientists will be able to produce clones of people, and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have. Scientists will be able to do these things, but should they? 9Which of the following can NOT be realized today? AReading newspapers on a compute. BCreating cloned animals. DMy daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮 ) pretty severely in school. So I quitted my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home. A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.”Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved them because of all the good she does in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled. What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own persons. Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gave him a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer. We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 cash to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time. My daughter has always been the giver, and now she and our family are the receivers, and I can not tell you how incredibly honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea. 13What did the author once do according to the passage? AShe was a ticket seller. BShe was a school teacher. CShe was a babysitter. DShe was a social worker. 14Why did the boy want to offer free tickets to Alisa? ABecause Alisa is a disabled girl. BBecause he has a lot money to share.
