Nowadays, the family education has become one of the topical issues, which makes people to rethink about the influences of the relationship between father and son. As we all known, family education always have great influences on children. To some extent, if one have open-mined parents, one might live happier life than those own narrow thoughts parents. In this thesis, I am going to talk about the relationship between father and son basic on two English movies: Billy Elliot and Dead Poets Society. Billy Elliot is a son of a coal miner, Jackie. When Billy was 11, he was forced to have boxing class on weekends, but he was attracted by ballet by chance. He gradually fell in love with ballet, he was dancing on his way to school, in his bedroom and even in the shower. But Jackie thought ballet was so girlish that Billy should not waste time and money on it. After the furious fight in his mind, he decided to stick to -his dream. He practiced so hard with the help of his ballet teacher. The day before Christmas Eve, instead of doing something to request Jackies permission, Billy said nothing but to looked in to Jackies eyes firmly, danced sincerely and hardly to show Jackie that he can dance well. After Jackie saw Billys enthusiasm of ballet, he betrayed his fellows and gave up strike to earn some money for Billys tuition, meanwhile, Jackie beard the mystification of his workmates. Jackies aim was to earn an opportunity for his son to success and change Billys fate. Eventually, Billy became an excellent dancer with his fathers love and support. Unfortunately, unlike Billys father, Neils father never really listened to him. His father had great ambitions for Neil so that he sent Neil to the Welton. He considered that Neil was born to be a doctor. The death of Neil made me sad, however when I think hardly, Neils death was not happened accidentally but inevitably. There were so many students parents, but the director only highlighted the Neils father. Besides, every time when Neils father appears on the scene, the atmosphere becomes heavy. His fathers words are beyond doubt and cannot be denied. To some degree, the relationship between Neil and his father isnt like father and son, but like boss and underling. In the film, Neil usually answered his father with very low voice: ” Yes, Sir. ” Neils father was some sort of control freak that he arranged Neils future and never allow Neil have his own life until Neil become a doctor in the future. Fulfilled with his dream, romanticism and passion, Neil attempted to fight against his father, and fought for his dream and freedom. When Neil ask his fathers permission again, his father fell into rage and rebuked Neil sharply for challenging his authority. Regardless of Neils explanation, his father interrupted Neil categorically, forced Neil to do things he was asked to in his character as a father. Neil had no choice but to hide his own thoughts and made his promise to his father. In order to clear the air, he even tried to start small talk with his father. From the outside, Neil might seem to have full of free and easy, passion, dream outside, actually he is timid and overcautious inside. As a top student from a middle class family with very harsh home education, Neil got used to forbear his own thoughts and will in silence, and resigned himself entirely to his fathers will. The contradiction between them might seem small in appearance, but it paved the way for Neils pathetic destiny. The last conversation between Neil and his father, Neils father still had the initiative. After his father found out Neil had joined in the dramatic performance, the old man burst into anger, and made up his own mind to transfer Neil to another school. Neil tried his best to talk with his father but he failed again. For his heart was like dead ashes, he chose to free himself by suicide. Billys father finally let Billy dance, as a result of it, Billy achieved success in the end. Neils father never make concessions, which leaved Neil no choice but to take his own life. Billys happy ending and Neils tragedy told us that home education counts so significant for a child. In todays China, many parents still push their children so hard to do things children are unwilling to. After we saw the tragedy of Neil, we should not let that happen. Parents should be open-minded, and learn to let go, to allow their children to have their own choice, to live their own life.
