English examinations should be excluded from Gaokao.docx
English examinations should be excluded from GaokaoRecently there is a rather loud voice in the society that English should be excluded from College Entrance Examination. As for me , I firmly insist that English should be cancelled from Gaokao. After China reinstituted the gaokao system in 1977, English was soon ranked in the scope of basic courses, Chinese students invest the most time learning English Learning English consumes too much time and energy .In the current exam-oriented education environment, It's just for the gaokao. we start to learn English at such a young age. Why should we learn another country's language so young? Why not learn more about our own culture instead? Students are free to choose their own majors. If the major is not relevant to English, they needn't learn English and pass the tests. Many college students don't use English at all. The exam-oriented motivation means that while many Chinese learn English from an early age, few are actually able to use it well in real life. Many institutions which require that employees have a really good command of English are complaining about the shortage of real talent. Chinese students read fewer books and lack hands-on ability and active minds. Canceling the English test does not mean that English is not important any more. Instead, there will be two English tests every year and a grading system will be introduced. Universities can then make their own requirements in terms of English proficiency for applicants.
