Current methodology has sought more symmetrical kinds of the relationships between students and teachers such as friend with friend,colleague with colleague.Thirdly ,for various reasons,traditional English teaching tends to targets on two language skills while ignoring the others .sometimes ,the teaching has become programmed to kinds of passive learning atmosphere the teachers talks,the students listen and do their homework .here ,learning simply means taking down whatever is given.in this type of teaching ,students learn the basic skills of reading and writing .for example ,due to the need of language learning in the 19th century ,the grammar-translation method emphasized reading and writing skills while virtually ignored listening and speaking skills.in the past ,there was not listening test in the college entrance examination ,and there is not speaking test,too.Chapter3 presenting student-centered teaching and teacher”s role 3.1 presenting the essence of students-centered teaching Learning centered was a watching in the literature on teaching and education McCombs and whistler(1997.9)define learner-centered teaching as “the perspective that couples a focus on individual learners with a focus on learning best available knowledge about learning and how it occurs and about teaching “.now students centered teaching has been identified as a core value in the teaching .there is an English proverb,”You may take a horse to the water ,but you can not make the horse drink .”the theory of second language acquisition belives that “English can not be taught.it must be learned.”so Middle School English teachers should accomplish students-centered teaching .3.2 presenting the features of students-teaching In the past ,our english teaching hold on teacher-centered teaching .the instruction of the teachers takes up most time of the english classroom and can not provide enough opportunities for the students .thus ,it makes the students becomes the passive acceptors of the language .in fact ,the initial task of english learning is learning not teaching .as we know that english is different from other subjects,it is a practical subject whose linguistic skills must be cultivated and improved by the students practice,the teaching effect mostly depends on the students self-motivation.so english classroom teaching must hold the idea of student-centered teaching .Our modern education has converged on students learning as the center of the educational universe, ideas about what constitutes a high quality education have shifted the traditional view of what learners actually learn ,achieve.in other words,the students centered teaching has three features.Firstly,students-centered teaching is out-orientede,the primary measure of successful teaching is what students actually know and is able to do . Secondly ,students-centered teaching is competency-based,learning objictives and learning outcomes are tied to the most important skills and knowledge in learning.Thirdly, students-centered teaching is dedicated to continual on learning outcomes ,learning faculty are enabled to identify problem areas and redesign improvements.3.3 presenting the english teachers”role under the students-centered teachingThe students-centered teaching is the idea that teachers are facilitators,organizers,guiders,and participants of teaching .it is not enough to construct a syllabus and present information ,the job of the teachers now involves many aspects .but students-centered teaching does not mean the reduction of teachers”role .the most efficient activities of the teachers can be made almost useless if they do not organize them efficiently(Harmer,1982:200).so the Middle School English teacher is the indivisible part in teaching activities.take the functions that the teachers performs in different activities .Before class,the teacher is a planner,who plans to teach ,and what result to achieve.In class,the teacher can be a facilitator and organizer ,he or she facilitates the pace and organizes the activities so that can run smoothly and efficiently.the teacher can be a guider ,he or she gives instructions clearly and briefly before starting the activities so that students know what to do and how to do it .the teacher can be a participant,he or she corrects mistakes and organizes feedbake.After class the teacher is an evaluator ,who evaluates not only how successfully he has conducted the class but also how efficient the learning activities have been.even though in communication among all the participants it is usually the teacher who initiates the interaction .The new curriculum requires the change of the teachers ”role .the most important task of the new curriculum is to change the students learning ,to construct a learning platform that full of freedom ,exploration and communication .while the change of learning patterns expects the change of teaching patterns ,and the change of teaching patterns starts with the change of teachers role .so with the new curriculum ,the first thing for the teachers should do is to change their roles ,to reshape their teaching roles .American Professor W.
