The 67 year old grandmother was elected only a few years after two terrible civil wars. During the 2005 election, Johnson-Sirleaf inspired 51% of the women in Liberia to vote up from 15% in the years before. President Johnson-Sirleaf encouraged each person in her country to take part in rebuilding their country. She knew that one of the important requirements for long-term development and progress is that each person should play their part in building a harmonious and prosperous society. As a young girl, Ellen Johnson proved to those around her that she could play her part. At the age of 8 she started playing soccer on the all boys team at her Liberian elementary school.
