In a race, I was always1. In baseball I was likely to be2on the head or drop the ball. During the spring of my kindergarten year, our class had a field trip to a park in a town about twenty miles away. Making that drive now is not a big3but when youre six and youve lived in a town of 300 people all your life, going to a big town of a couple of thousand people is really something. I dont remember too much about it. But there was one thing that I will never forgetthe4race. The parents tied our feet together. One little boy got me for a5. He was the second most6boy in our class so he usually won at everything and I knew that with me tied to him he didnt have a chance. And Im sure he knew he was in trouble. The gun sounded and we were off. Some couples were falling and stumbling all around us, 7we stayed on our feet and made it to the other side. 8, when we turned around and headed back for home, we were in the lead! Only one couple had a chance to win, and they were a good several yards behind us. A few feet from the finish line, disaster struck: I tripped and fell. We were9enough that my partner could have easily dragged me across the finish line and won. But he didnt. Instead he stopped, 10down and helped me upjust at the other couple crossed the finish line. As a result, we received a small red ribbon for coming in second. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPSerror is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, an expert in human-computer inter-action, it is a combination of the two. We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype(网络电话软件), he told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasnt until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind ofgarbage in garbage out”. Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that its going to the wrong place. ”Barry Brown once worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in peoples cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called“The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS”. It lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given. Barry Brown says, “To make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together. ”1. In Paragraph 2, Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the conversation to. A. build up his own reputationB. laugh at his stupid friendC. prove the GPS system is only garbageD. describe an example of human error2. What is the disadvantage of small screens in GPS equipment according to the text? A. They just provide the next turn. B. They are harmful to eyes. C. They make drivers tired easily. D. They often break down suddenly. 3. With which of the following statements would Barry Brown most likely agree? A. GPS units are to blame for most GPS service failures. B. We should introduce higher standards for the driving license. C. Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS systems. D. Drivers, GPS systems and passengers should unite to improve GPS systems. 4. What is Mr. Browns attitude towards GPS? A. Unconcerned.B. Prejudiced. C. Objective.D. Critical. 5. What would be the best title for the text? A. Driving with GPS can be difficult. B. Driving confusions can be caused by small screens. C. Driving without GPS should be much more convenient. D. GPS equipment in driving: to be deserted or improved? 1. Whats the best title of the passage? _2. 选词填空(hit/beat/strike)。One of the stones _ the window. He could feel his heart _ fast. _ while the iron is hot. 6.【解析】选A。 根据we have gone through可知此处应用一般将来时。7.【解析】选A。 better yet, 意为“甚至更好”, 还可用: even better, still better, better still。 Watered regularly, the flower will bloom every month. (过去分词作条件状语)Water regularly, and the flower will bloom every month. 题中temple后是定语, 因为date back to和temple是主动关系, 所以用v. -ing形式。故选D。12.【解析】选A。 在Its time that. . . Its time that we studied/should study hard. 。 14.【解析】选A。 故选A。 问句省略了“do you? ”。答语“Yes, I do. No, I dont. 1.【解析】选A。 5.【解析】选A。 7.【解析】选A。 Section B13. 【解析】there。 there指的是Massachusetts, the US。go there去那里。14. 【解析】and。 15. 【解析】so。 so. . 17. 【解析】were。 18. 【解析】By。 by到为止。19. 【解析】what。 20. 【解析】a/any。 make a sound发出声响。make any sound发出任何声响。. 1. Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. 故选D。2. 【解析】选A。 One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. . . To make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together“为了让全球定位系统运行得更好, 我们需要更好地了解如何将司机, 乘客和全球定位系统结合起来”可知选D。4. 5. 【解析】选A。
