model is largely based on escaping regulations and breaking the law.Airbnb is an Internet-based service that allows people to rent out spare rooms to strangers for short stays.Uber is an Internet taxi service that allows thousands of people to answer ride requests with their own cars. There are hundreds of other such services. The good thing about the sharing economy is that it promotes the use of underused resources.Millions of people have houses or apartments with empty rooms, and Airbnb allows them to profit from these rooms while allowing guests a place to stay at prices that are often far less than those charged by hotels.Uber offers prices that are competitive with standard taxi prices and their drivers are often much quicker and more trustworthy(值得信任的).But the downside of the sharing economy has gotten much less attention. Most cities and states both tax and regulate hotels, and the tourists who stay in hotels are usually an important source of tax income. But many of Airbnbs customers are not paying the taxes required under the law.Airbnb can also raise issues of safety for its customers and trouble for hosts neighbours.Hotels are regularly inspected(检查) to ensure that they are not fire traps and that they dont form other risks for visitors.Airbnb hosts face no such inspections.Since Airbnb is allowing people to escape taxes(税收) and regulations, the company is simply promoting(引起) thefts.Others in the economy will lose by carrying an additional tax burden or being forced to live next to an apartment unit with a never-ending series of noisy visitors. The same story may apply with Uber.Uber is currently in disputes over whether its cars meet the safety and insurance requirements imposed(强加) on standard taxis. Also,if Uber and related services flood the market, they could harm all taxi drivers ability to earn a minimum wage. This downside of the sharing needs to be taken seriously, but that doesnt mean the current tax and regulatory structure is perfect.1.What is the positive thing about the sharing economy?A.It is a global trend.B.It draws on spare resources.C.It is beyond regulations.D.It brings in modest profits.答案:B解析:细节理解题。根据第三段的第一句“Thegoodthingaboutthesharingeconomyisthatitpromotestheuseofunderusedresources.”可知共享经济模式的一大好处就是促进了闲置资源的利用。2.What is the problem with Airbnbs customers according to the passage?A.They are closely inspected.B.They are likely to steal from the hosts.C.They can be noisy to hosts neighbours.D.They have to pay heavy taxes. 3.What is the argument over Uber according to the passage?A.Whether it guarantees customers safety.B.Whether it provides reliable services.C.Whether it lowers customers expenses.D.Whether it can compete with standard taxis. 4.What is likely to be talked about in the following paragraphs?A.The benefits of the sharing economy.B.Necessary improvements of current laws.C.Further development of Airbnb and Uber.D.More downsides of Airbnb and Uber. A Bristol teacher has proved that you dont have to earn a fortune to be able to make ends meet.Kath Kelly spent a year living on just one pound per day. This money did not include the rent of her room on a shared flat or the utility bills(水电费),which were all paid in advance.1 The motivation for the experiment came from her concern about buying a wedding present for her brother and his fiancée.At the time she had an income of $10,000 a year, which meant that she was fairly hard up most of the time.2If she spent less than $1 a day,she could not carry the money over. She also decided not to borrow from friends. Kath was often attending free events, from book launches to gallery openings.3 Buses were out,so every journey had to be made on foot or by bicycle, and as she couldnt afford phone calls, she would visit friends or leave them notes if she had anything to tell them.4“Instead of meeting for lunch in a cafe as we used to,wed take sandwiches and eat them on a bench in the park,” she explains. At the end of the year,Kath was able to buy her brother and his new wife a $1,300 life membership of the National Trust as a wedding present with her savings.5While helping out on a farm she met her current boyfriend and found true love at last. A.She would attend any event that might have free snacks.B.She made soups from whatever vegetables she could find.C.From the beginning she set some very strict rules for herself.D.Kaths promise of poverty actually meant she went out more.E.Kath says her friends were great about the change in her lifestyle.F.However,it did have to cover everything else, including clothing and food.G.Besides achieving what shed set out to do,Kaths experiment also had an unexpected result.答案:15 FCAEG
