In a guide brochure. B. On a job-hunting website. C. In an academic magazine. D. On a book cover. BTwo of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding ( 衬垫 ) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table. I don t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. Its equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregonean opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldnt be 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 4 页,共 18 页 - - - - - - - - - 5 here. But then I thought about the fact that hes 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all. I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I m doing the right thing. I m buying myself peace of mind and that s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being. 24. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule? A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated. B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working. C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better. D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone. 25. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to _. A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor B. meet her father who was already an old man C. join in the holiday celebration of the company D. finish her work before the deadline approached 26. The underlined word “foregone ” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _. A. abandoned B. lacked C. avoided D. seized 27. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Emotional Well-being B. The Two Saddest Words C. The Most Useful Rule D. The Peace of Mind CAlzheimer s disease has no cure. There are, however, five drugs known and approved that can slow down the development of its symptoms. The earlier such drugs are administered, the better. Unfortunately, the disease is usually first noticed when people complain to their doctors of memory problems. That is normally too late for the drugs to do much good. A simple and reliable test for Alzheimers that can be administered to everybody over the age of about 65, before memory-loss sets in, would therefore be useful. 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 5 页,共 18 页 - - - - - - - - - 6 Theo Luider, of the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, and his colleagues think they have found onebut it works only in women. They made their discovery, just reported in the Journal of Proteome Research, by tapping into a long-term, continuing study that started in 1995 with 1,077 non-demented and otherwise healthy people aged between 60 and 90. At the beginning of the project, and subsequently during the periods 1997-99 and 2002-04, participants were brought in for a battery of neurological (神经学的 ) and cognitive ( 认知的 ) investigations, physical examinations, brain imaging and blood tests. During the first ten years of the study, 43 of the volunteers developed Alzheimers diseases. When Dr. Luider compared blood samples from these people with samples from 43 of their fellow volunteers, matched for sex and age, who had remained Alzheimers-free, he found something surprising. Levels of a substance called pregnancy zone protein (妊娠带蛋白 ) had been unusually high, even before their symptoms appeared, in some of those who went on to develop Alzheimers disease. Those “some ”, it turned out, were all women. On average, leve ls of pregnancy zone protein in those women who went on to develop Alzheimers were almost 60% higher than those of women who did not. In men, levels of the protein were the same for both. The reason for this curious result seems to be that the brain plaques (斑块 ) associated with Alzheimers disease are themselves turning out pregnancy zone protein. Certainly, when Dr. Luider applied a chemical stain specific to that protein to the plaques of dead Alzheimer s patients he found the protein present in them. Confusingly, though, it was there in the plaques of both sexes. Presumably, female cells (and therefore the plaques of female brains) make more of it than male cells do. But that remains to be proved. Whatever the reason, however, this result means that women, at least, may soon be able to tell whether and when they are at risk of Alzheimers and thus do something about it before they start losing their minds. 28. What can we learn from the first paragraph A. No medication can slow down the development of Alzheimer s symptoms. B. To detect Alzheimers disease before memory loss appears is vital.C. Doctors had better handle Alzheimers disease when people are 65 years old. D. People who always complain are most likely to have Alzheimers disease. 29. T he underlined word “one” in Paragraph 2 refers to _. A. a simple and reliable test for Alizheimers B. a possible cure for Alzheimer s C. an important discovery about Alzheimers D. an effective and legal drug 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 6 页,共 18 页 - - - - - - - - - 7 for Alzheimers 30. What do es Dr. Luiders study tell us about the pregnancy zone proteinA. It wont go high until the symptoms of Alzheimers appear. B. In men, levels of it remain stable for their lifetime. C. Women developing Alzheimers usually have lower levels of it. D. The brain plaques connected with Alzheimers produce it. 31. The passage is mainly about _. A. patients of Alzheimers disease and its drugsB. an introduction to the pregnancy zone protein C. a new discovery concerning Alzheimers disease D. the development stages of Alzheimers diseaseD The newspaper must provide for the reader the facts, pure ,unprejudiced, objectively selected factsBut in these days of complex news it must provide more; it must supply interpretation(解读),the meaning of the facts This is the most important assignment facing American journalists to make clear to the reader the problems of the day , to make international news understandable as community news,to recognize that there is no longer any such thing aslocalnews, because any event in the international area has a local reaction in the financial market ,political circles,in terms ,indeed ,of our very way of life There is in journalism a widespread view that when you start an interpretation, you are entering dangerous waters, the rushing tides of opinionThis is nonsense The opponents of interpretation insist that the writer and the editor shall limit himself to thefacts This insistence raises two questions What are the facts ?And:Are the bare facts enough? As for the first question, consider how a so calledfactualstory comes aboutThe reporter collects, say ,fifty facts; out of these fifty, his space being necessarily restricted,he selects the ten which he considers most importantThis is Judgment Number OneThen he or his editor decides which of these ten facts shall hold the lead of the piece This is Judgment Number TwoThen the night editor determines whether the article shall be presented on page one, where it has a large influence,or on page twentyfour, where it has littleJudgment Number Three Thus in the presentation of a socalledfactualorobjectivestory, at least three 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 7 页,共 18 页 - - - - - - - - - 8 judgments are involved And they are judgments not at all unlike those involved in interpretation,in which reporter and editor, calling upon their research resources ,their general background, and theirnews neutralism(中立) ,arrive at a conclusion as to the significance of the news The two areas of judgment, presentation of the news and its interpretation, are both objective rather than subjective processes as objective, that is ,as any human being can beIf an editor is determined to give a prejudiced view of the news,he can do it in other ways and more effectively than by interpretationHe can do it by the selection of those facts that support his particular viewpointOr he can do it by the place he gives a storypromoting it to page one or dragging it to page thirty32According to Paragraphs 1 and 2,which of the following statements is true?AThe most important task of reporters is to provide facts for the readersBIf a reporter makes clear the facts he writes,he will get into troubleCIn order to make current events clear to the readers, reporters and editors must select fac
