Reflection of A Tale of Two Cities “ It was the best of times, it was worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way . In short the period was so far like th present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.”I guess even someone never read the book A Tale of Two Cities must have read these sentences. They give me a feeling that words are so powerful and I can feel that kind of strength and power even before I fully understand what the writer wants to tell. It is like, once the writer wrote those words down, those words are no longer one part of the write rand become independent. They will attract the readers to read, sometimes the idea of writer doesn t even important, his words speak for everything. A Tale of Two Cities is a historical story and it is serious. Unlike Dumas, the Broutes, there are few ironic and sarcastic words in Dickens words. His works attracts me with the story itself and the ideas the writer try to tell us. The book is about revenge, love and salvation. It told me a story about what happened to Mr.Manette and his daughter, and how Madame Defarge tries to revenge and how Mr.Carton sacrifices. The story told me that really everything has two sides, the poorer the people are, the more violent they can be. The greater the love is, the larger the sacrifice is. The more flourishing the society looks, the dirtier it really is under the skin. Revenge O Liberty, what crimes are committed in thy name. A little girl was send far away from home by her brother when she was little and lost all the information about her family. Many years later she got the news and knew how her family was ruined by those nobles. I think Madame Defarge has the right to hate. I felt pity for her when I read that she lost her love. She is a woman with capability; I think I even show respect to her until she lost her reason and let the desire of vengeance took her. It was pathetic for one to lost some of his basic morality and knee to some of his native instinct. People born hard to know the truly reason why they do things and what they really want. In that case, we tend to give ourselves a reason and make us feel less confusing when we try to achieve something we don t even know why we want it or when we try to achieve something when we know fr certain it is wrong. Madame Defarge did all those ugly things to people in the name of liberty, in the name of people, in the name of revolution. She refuse to find out that at the bottom of 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 1 页,共 3 页 - - - - - - - - - her heart, there is only hate. Those people are the most pathetic and the most happy people. They consider all they are doing are right, they will not doubt about it because it is the only reason they are doing it. They say it is for liberty, but they don t know what liberty is, they are only the slave of their own desire. Salvation It was the worst of times. It was the best of times because everyone was struggling to live better. After 17 years in Bastille, Mr.Manette even forget his name, all he knows is making shoes. However, under his daughter s care, he came back to live. For love, for the love to her daughter, for the love to hs new family, he has the courage to go back to France to face everything that might remind him of the past. When Lucie went to honeymoon, he lost himself for nine days, he needs it to be peaceful or to run away from the reality. On one hand, he knows Charles loves his daughter and can provide her a happy life, on the other hand, he can t forget those 7 years in Bastille. Love helps him to forget the bad memory and hatred. Everything have passed, nothing can be more important than a happy family . Madame Defarge fulfills her salvation by turn her hatred into violence. Only in this way can she find the meaning of her life. She knows she does all those bad things just to revenge. She just ignore it. Most people in this novel are good, some of then are just being used by the leaders or lost themselves in the happiness of killing. To create a new world, is violent really necessary? If I were one of the poor people in the two cities at that time, will I enjoy the blood of those nobles and believe I am doing he right thing? Will I be able to hold my idea and say no to these leaders eve nit leads me to death? Love If violent can t make the world better, what can? Mr.Carton is the cure. To its great grief, the sun hesitantly rises. On all the land it light up there is nothing more saddening than this man. A noble genius as he is, theres no place for his gift to shine and his feeling to show. So helpless is he in pursuing his own happiness that in the end he simply gives up. He is slowly wasting away as the sun rises and sets. This is Mr.Carton. I don t even remember when the first time this man show up, he seems to be nobody. In fact, almost everyone in this novel has a clear image, but Mr.Carton seems to hide in the shadow. His love to Lucie represent him.He thinks it is good enough to let Lucie knows that he loves her and it is good enough for him to see her have a happy life, He says he weill give up his own life just to let anyone Lucie loves to live a happy life. He follows his words. This is too much for a man who loves a girl. He says he see that child who lay upon her bosom and who bore his name. 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 2 页,共 3 页 - - - - - - - - - This is what he thinks, he believes his death will let her remember him all her life and this is all he is asking for. He consider his death to save Mr.Darnay is a far better thing that he does, that he has ever done. It is far better reat that he goes to than he was ever known. He is no simply Mr.Carton. He is the cure Dickens gives us to save the worst of all times. Love, the love that is so deep that can sacrifice oneself to save others. Love can create a new world and save people from suffering. Love will heal the wound of violence. 名师资料总结 - - -精品资料欢迎下载 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 名师精心整理 - - - - - - - 第 3 页,共 3 页 - - - - - - - - -
