But speaking of history and culture, these small metal things may carry a value much bigger than their own.The Peoples Republic of China issued (发行) its first set of coins in 1957 and later issued three other sets. This year is the 60th anniversary (周年) of our countrys coins. The face value of the coins has changed over time, showing the developing economy (经济) of our country. Chinas first coins were the 1-fen, 2-fen and 5-fen coins. Although they are still in use today, later sets of coins do not include fen coins anymore. Today, we usually use 1-jiao, 5-jiao and 1-yuan coins.Besides the value, the designs of the coins also tell something about the countrys progress and culture. The front sides of the first set of coins had the national emblem (国徽) and the countrys name, while the back sides had two ears of corn (两束麦穗). It helped Chinese people build our national identity (认同感) at that time.On coins issued in 1980, China added a gear (齿轮) beside the corn. It showed that China was changing from an agricultural (农业的) country to an industrial (工业的) country, Luo Yonghui, a coin designer from China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation, told the Shanghai Observer.China started to print flowers on its coins in 1991. Peonies (牡丹), plum blossoms (梅花), chrysanthemums (菊花), lotus and orchid (兰花) have all appeared on coins. These flowers all have positive meanings in Chinese culture.According to Luo, coins are like the “name card” of a country. The next time you use coins, you might think about the stories behind them. TEENSCoins in ancient ChinaChinas earliest coins can be dated back to more than 3,000 years ago, during the Shang Dynasty. The coins were made out of bronze (青铜) and in the shape of shells. But later, coins with square holes in the middle showed up and became the most commonly used coins in ancient China. People even gave ancient Chinese coins a nickname: “Brother Square Hole” (孔方兄).The holes allowed people to collect the coins using strings (绳子) or sticks. They were easy to carry around. Some people even wound strings of coins around their waists.Where do old coins go?You put coins into vending machines You buy bus tickets using coins. But have you ever wondered where these coins go?Banks collect coins every day, most of which are taken from bus companies, shopping malls and supermarkets. Machines are used to clean the coins and separate or worn coins. The separated coins will be melted down and made into new ones. The other coins will be packed up and put into use again. Sometimes street stall (摊位) owners go to banks to exchange coins.According to Xinhua, people use more coins during summer than in winter. They buy more drinks and fruit with coins in summer. BThanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems that we may have considered those things natural and havent realized that our planet is getting “sick”. Now scientists have given us a warning.More than 15,000 scientists around the world have written a letter to warn about environmental threats (威胁), the Washington Post reported.Among those environmental challenges, climate change sits at the top. Global average temperatures have risen by more than 0.5 C since 1992. A half-degree temperature rise is a big deal. It means that heat waves would last around a third longer and rainstorms would be about a third more intense (猛烈的). The increase in sea levels would be much higher, according to NASA. Countries like Singapore and Tokyo that are at low altitudes (海拔) may be covered by the ocean in the future. But this is not the only problem people are facing. Its getting harder to get fresh water. Ocean pollution has become serious. Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have dropped by nearly 30 percent.Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth mass extinction (物种大灭绝) in history. More than two-thirds of the worlds wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade if action isnt taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. The Amur leopard (远东豹), black rhino and cross river gorilla (克罗斯河大猩猩) are some of the most endangered animals. However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层) smaller. Thats because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone. This progress shows that we can make positive changes when we act decisively, the letter says.C本期题目进入初三以来,越来越多的同学利用周末上各种各样的培训班来进行补习。 Is a Training Class Necessary? 【语言组织】重点词组:依赖:depend on, rely on 营利性的:commercial adj.巩固知识:consolidate the knowledge 养成的习惯: get into the habit of . ;form the habit of . 1) People have (take, adopt) different attitudes toward sth2) Some people believe that . But are they really necessary? In my class, there are two different opinions on this. Some people think training classes are necessary because they feel that they can learn a lot from the teachers there. They think it is better than learning by themselves and they can also consolidate their knowledge at the same time. However, others think training classes will make students less independent in their studies. If students take these classes, they might not have enough time to rest. Also, many training classes are set up just to make money. In my opinion, the decision to take training classes depends on the learning abilities of the students. Students who can manage their studies well dont need to take training classes. But students who do poorly in school might want to take the training classes, because its a good way to teach them how to study well under pressure and improve their ability to study. After all, it is important to choose what is suitable for you. Try to find happiness in your studies. (1)Ninth grade is coming. More students in Grade 9 are choosing to take training classes. Students in my class have different views about these classes. Some people like training classes because they can help students consolidate what they have learned in class and also help them learn more than they do in regular classes.Every coin has two sides. Others think that training classes shouldnt play a leading role in school, as it is easy for us to become dependent on them. Students who take these classes might have difficulty getting enough rest. Whats worse, a lot of training classes are set up to earn money and education may not be at the top of the teachers minds in these classes.Im against training classes. First, training classes distract (使分散注意力) you from schooling. For example, I find that some students do training class homework while they are in their normal classes. As a result, they dont focus on what their teachers say. Furthermore, students usually take training classes because of pressure from their parents. These students really hate training classes and extra homework after school. It could cause them to lose interest in studying. 而且,本文用到了一些比较地道的句型,如:play a leading role 和 at the top of ones mind 等,使得语言丰富度提高,值得表扬。(2)These days, an increasing number of students are choosing to take training classes in their spare time. In my opinion, this is totally unnecessary. To begin with, taking lots of training classes means you have to spend a lot of time away from home. As a result, a lot of time will probably be wasted that could have been used to study at home.Whats more, some students may become too reliant on their extra classes and wont listen carefully in their regular classes. They might miss a lot of information and make mistakes on their exams.Last but not least, students will become frustrated (沮丧的) after these classes if their grades show no improvements. Whats more, they have to complete extra homework. This will leave them no time to relax! As the old saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”In my opinion, there is no need for us to depend on training classes for our studies.上海市民办新复兴初级中学 张诗媛点评:本文用到了 to begin with, whats more, last but not least 等表达,使得文章论据结构清晰,观点明确。(3)Have you noticed that more students have started to take training classes at weekends since we entered ninth grade? Many people may think this is a good thing to do, especially parents. But I dont agree. In fact, I think training classes are really unnecessary. I have a few reasons for holding this opinion. For students, having training classes may make them too dependent on those classes. They wont take time to think about things on their own and will just rely on the teachers in those classes. Also, they will feel more stressed out and have less time to relax because theyre taking so many classes. On the other hand, training classes are usually big and can not meet the needs of every student. In addition, some of the teachers at the training classes may not be as qualified (合格的) as regular school teachers. This is my opinion. Do you agree with me?
