(3)Unit 2 Let's talk teens第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。A I like reading The Economist and watching I love the 80s. I like tennis, Fazoli's breadsticks and writing assignments. I value honesty, commitment, scholarship and kindness. These are hard and true facts, but there is a lot I do not know about myself. I don't know how I feel about the death penalty, I have mixed feelings about religion, and I don't know what I think about a cashless society. I have no stock (现成的) answer to offer about a life-changing experience or a moment of enlightenment(启迪), and it is hard for me to give a comprehensive proclamation of who I am, for my identity unfolds more every day as my experiences grow. Since I am only 17 years old, life has a lot of unfolding to do. I dislike saying "I am trying to find myself" because my identity is not lost, it just needs more uncovering. Luckily for me, what I love to do and want to be helps me uncover more about myself. I want to be a writer. I may not end up a professional writer but I will always write, even if I am the only one interested in my work, because writing is my self-reflection. When writing, I sometimes get worked up into such a passion that I barely know what I am saying. I just let my fingers fly over the keyboard and the ideas pour from my head. When I go back through the jumble of unpunctuated(未加标点的) ideas, I notice a theme running through the writing. I don't try to put a moral in the theme, but invariably it happens. Evaluating the theme and the rest of the writing helps me interpret my own character and read my bottled-up feelings at times. In opinion essays, my values show. In stories, the fictional characters express my beliefs. Every day my experience and knowledge increase, and I learn more about myself. Each time I write what is in my head as honestly as I can, another piece of the identity puzzle is revealed. Mostly, I like what is unearthed (though this varies depending on how "teenage girlish" I'm feeling). I am not worried that I don't know everything about myself. As I get older, I'll figure it out.1.What can be the best title for the passage?A.Who Am I?B.What Am I Going to Be?C.How Can I Feel About Myself?D.How Can I Write About Myself?2.What does the author want to do?A.To evaluate the cashless society.B.To try to find herself.C.To take up writing.D.To recognize her identity clearly.3.The author isn't worried that she doesn't know everything about herself because _.A.she thinks there is no need to know about herselfB.she thinks it is impossible to know about herselfC.she has no ability to know about herself as a girlD.shell know more about herself with her growing upB For many years there's been a debate about rewarding our children. Does it work? Is it effective? Some people think we should establish a standard with our kids and give them something for meeting this standard as a reward. Punishment is given out in much the same way, but it's used when certain standards of performance, behaviour, etc., have not been met. Kids will often become more dutiful when threatened with punishment, and work harder when promised a valuable reward. The problem is what happens when you aren't around. To develop responsible, self-disciplined kids, parents need to promote certain ideas. One of these ideas is that everyone pitches in and helps in your family. Another idea is that there can be enjoyment in doing any task if we choose to make it so. When a task is for a worthy cause (our family can enjoy the house more because I helped clean it), this message can have a big impact. This is how we help our kids develop a sense of responsibility. When our children develop this responsibility, they'll be more disciplined, and they'll control their emotions better. When we give rewards to our kids, we reduce the sense of responsibility. We also create children who may temporarily perform to a certain standard, but who aren't likely to continue the performance without the carrot hanging in front of them. "Rewards and punishment can change behaviour for a while, but they cannot change the person who engages in the behaviour," said Alfie Kohn, author of Punished by Rewards. "Good values have to be grown from the inside out." Parents can help give their children a sense of shared responsibility and discipline which can last a lifetime. The real rewards that your children receive will be their readiness for the complex and demanding world that waits for thema world that rewards those who have learned the secrets of discipline responsibility. So keep those shiny rewarding to yourself, and let your kids find their own rewards.1.According to the passage, when children are threatened with punishment, _.A.they may lose interest in their workB.they may appear to be well-behavedC.they may change to another personD.the results will be worse than usual2.What can we know from Paragraph 3?A.Parents should promote certain ideas to help children develop.B.Children should be responsible for their discipline.C.Children should help build a good family atmosphere.D.No children will adapt to society without their parents' help.3.The underlined part "the carrot" in Paragraph 4 probably refers to _.A.apologiesB.aimsC.rewardsD.doubts4.According to the passage, Alfie Kohn would agree that parents should _.A.never pay attention to the way their children do thingsB.show their children how to behave by exampleC.never punish their children to change their behaviourD.help their children establish good valuesC When I was a kid, my siblings(兄弟姐妹) arid I used to have ice cream for dessert. Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a howl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat(款待) as fast as we could. Once, though, when I was probably about 10 or 11, our grandpa came to visit. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. On this particular occasion, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish their ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, "Why would you want to finish first? If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have a competition to see who can finish last." Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course this is about more than just dessert. Too often, kids want to scramble(争夺) for more, whether it's more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit persists into our adult years, and we end up constantly scrambling for more. We never develop the skill of appreciating what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of tasting their owned dessert, which could lead to a happier life for them. What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the opportunity to enjoy what's in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It's a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to treasure it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.1.The author's grandfather advised her sister and her to _.A.stop eating ice creamB.learn something from their way of eatingC.stop the competition between themD.eat ice cream as slowly as possible2.Which of the following best describes the author's grandfather?A.Humorous.B.Wise.C.Strict.D.Careful.3.What advice does the author give us in the passage?A.Value what you have.B.Keep longing for more.C.Have a balanced diet.D.Save for the future.4.We can infer from the last paragraph that the author _.A.benefits a lot from her grandfather's adviceB.doesn't like ice cream as much as beforeC.just starts to understand her grandfatherD.longs for the days when they ate ice creamD Physical education, or PE, isn't required for all high school students. PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights. Not doing sports increases teens' hazard of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be prevented by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. According to the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition(PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic(学业的) performance.
