Few have succeeded, because theUnited Statesis not like every other country in the world. It is a nation(国家)of nations. The “first American” were the Indians(印第安人).At the time of the discovery of the America, there were about 500,000 of them in the land. But when the settlers came, they killed many of the Indians and drove(驱赶)the rest to the west. After the American Revolution(美国革命)people from other countries came in great numbers. Not all of the people came to the land of their own free will(意志).The poor and unemployed(失业者)were forced to move from their villages and leave for America. People in prison were given the choice to stay in prison or leave the country for the new land. And several thousand African Negroes were brought in to be sold as slaves(奴隶).The newcomers brought withthem not only different ways of life, but also something else willing(自愿的)hands to build railroads, dig mines, plow(耕)fields. The United States could not have become an advanced(发达的)country without the labor of the newcomers. Without them, too, theUnited Stateswould be poor in art, music, theater, and science. The United States is truly a nation of nations. Americans are proud of it. Americans set up a single national government in 1787 by uniting(联合)thirteen separated(分离的)states. Cooling can slow down the process but cannot stop it.Organs differ in their sensitivity to damage. At body temperature, permanent destruction of the brain occurs after more than three to five minutes; of the heart, liver, and lung, after 10 to 30 minutes; of the kidney, after 50 to 100 minutes; and of the skin, after six to 12 hours. Although the shorter the time the organ is deprived of its blood supply the better, the cornea can be removed for grafting at relative leisure, but every minute is of vital importance for a liver transplant: when a kidney is removed from a living donor, it is not necessary to use elaborate preservation techniques. The operation on the donor and receiver are performed at the same time, and the receiver is prepared to receive the graft by the time that the donor organ is removed. Cadaver kidneys are removed as soon as possible after the donors death, preferably within an hour. Cool solutions are infused into the blood vessels of the kidney, which is then kept at 4ºC in a refrigerator or surrounded by ice in a vacuum bottle. At the same time, the recipient is prepared operation. Kidneys can be conserved in this simple way for 24 to 48 hours with little deterioration, and during this time they can be move for long distances. For a kidney to be preserved from 42 to 72 hours, a complicated machine is required to provide artificial circulation. To keep a kidney undamaged for longer than 72 hours is difficult. Blood cells, spermatozoa, and certain other dissociated tissue cells can be frozen to subzero temperatures and keep alive indefinitely. Special preserving fluids will prevent cell destruction by ice crystals, but these fluids have damaging effects if introduced into whole organs such as the kidney.窗体顶端1、(2分)The word “deteriorate” in the first paragraph means _.· A)die· B)cool· C)worsen· D)quicken参考答案: C 窗体底端窗体顶端2、(2分)It is obvious _.· A)the kidney is one of the most delicate organs· B)the brain is more delicate than most organs· C)the brain can never be transplanted· D)many people are willing to donate their kidneys参考答案: B 窗体底端窗体顶端3、(2分)Which of the following is TRUE?· A)A newly removed kidney can be kept alive in a refrigerator for 1 to 2 days· B)A dead kidney can be made live after blood is refused into its blood vessels· C)Special preserving fluid can be infused into the blood vessel of the kidney· D)Kidney may be damaged when frozen to an extremely low degree参考答案: D 窗体底端窗体顶端4、(2分)Which of the following organs can survive the longest?· A)livers· B)lungs· C)hearts· D)cornea参考答案: D 窗体底端窗体顶端5、(2.0分)Cooling _.· A)can help preserve kidneys without damage for 72 hours.· B)keeps blood cells alive very long in subzero temperatures· C)can not stop blood supply· D)keeps organs from deteriorating quickly参考答案: B 窗体底端解析:1 C2 B3 D4 D5 B28(2.0分)He is very careless with his money.· A)inattentive· B)worried· C)free· D)thoughtless参考答案: A 30(2.0分)He is depressed when he heard the bad news.· A)in high spirits· B)in low spirits· C)having a good time· D)cheerful参考答案: B
