''It was something that required brute strength, but not that alone,'' Dai said at his home in Xialong village, which sits at the entrance to Wuxia Gorge, one of the famous Three Gorges in Southwest China. ''You needed a lot of skills to do what we did.'' When outboard motors became available in the 1980's, boat trackers became a thing of the past. Today, they are seen only occasionally along the river during festivals and cultural events. However, Dai can still remember a time when being pulled by tracker along the Yangtze was the only way for people to travel from village to village in the mountainous Wushan county. Due to the area's rich mining resources, his services were vital for companies that wanted to ship their goods. ''I was 15 or 16 when I started'', said the retiree, explaining that his father also worked as a tracker. ''He died in 1964, when I was a teenager. I can't even remember us tracking together, but we did. It was so long ago.'' Dai said that boats crews worked in teams with a first, second and third master. The first master was the most essential because he sat in the boat and steered (操纵) it along the safest route. ''It was a key role. He had to guide the boat past jagged rocks and whirlpools,'' he said, adding that first masters were often the most experienced boatmen and the most familiar with the Yangtzer River. ''My tracker days were dangerous,'' Dai said. ''If the boat got caught in a whirlpool, it could have swallowed the boat and all the trackers down with it. The same thing would have happened if the halter (缰绳) broke.'' Dai's days as a tracker finally came to an end when his family invested in a motorboat in the early 1980s. He successfully applied for a license from Wushan shortly after. 1. He certainly had a “learn and do” attitude! He was able to turn each failed experiment into a successful way to invent the light bulb. So what can we learn from this? You can adopt the “fail forward” strategy too.In reality, none of us are failures. It's true, we will experience times of defeat, problems, and disasters, but remember, each one of us is meant to succeed in life. However, we must choose our fate. Henry David Thoreau said, “Men are born to succeed, not to fail.”We can never be forced into having a happy and successful life. Whether or not you experience success or failure is completely controlled by what you think and do. You are the only one who can choose the thoughts that will keep you from achieving the abundant life and joy that you are meant to have. No matter how difficult things may seem, say to yourself, “I choose to be a happy and successful person.”Why do some people get what they want and others fail? I believe that getting what you desire in life takes planning, and it doesn't just happen by luck. So how do we plan for success? It has been proven that successful people do things more differently than unsuccessful people. They recognize the patterns of success and follow them; one of those patterns is planning. They plan what they think and do, which sets them apart. They know exactly what they desire, have an intelligent plan for getting it, and then work their plan. They know what success will cost them in terms of time, energy, and results, and they devote the right resources toward making their plans happen.6. A challenging new book by the Harvard University psychologist Steven Pinker says that the answer is “yes”.In The Better Angels of Our Nature, Pinker presents data showing that human violence, while still very much with us today, has been gradually declining. Moreover, he says, “over the long sweep of history, women have been and will be a peaceful force. Traditional war is a man's game:tribal women never band together to attack neighboring villages.” As mothers, women tend to maintain peaceful conditions in which to bring up their children.Skeptics(怀疑者) immediately reply that women have not made war simply because they have rarely been in power. If they were empowered as leaders, the disorder of the world would force them to make the same warlike decisions that men do. Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, and Indira Gandhi were powerful women; all of them led their countries to war.But it is also true that these women rose to leadership by playing according to the political rules of “a man's world.” It was their success consistent with male values that enabled their rise to leadership in the first place. In a world in which women were in the majority of leadership positions, they might behave differently in power. So we are left with the broader question: does gender(性别) really matter in leadership? In terms of traditional opinion, various psychological studies show that men tend towards the hard power of command, while women are cooperative and naturally understand the soft power of attraction and persuasion. The key choices about war and peace in our future will depend not on gender, but on how leaders combine hard and soft power skills to produce smart policies. Both men and women will make those decisions.11. Which of the following does Pinker agree?A. Human violenee has been increasing.B. Men play a vital role in traditional war.C. War and peace depend on wise policies made by men or women.B. We had better choose women as our leaders if we want peace.C. Women are more likely to make smart policies than men.D. Yet Ridley, 54, sticks to his guns. “It is not mad to befieve in a happy future for people and the planet,” he says. Ridley, who's been a foreign correspondent, a zoologist, an economist, and a financier, brings a broad view to his sunny outlook. “People say I'm bonkers to claim the world will go on getting better, yet I can't stop myself,” he says. Read on to see how Ridley makes his case.Compared with 50 years ago, when I was just four years old, the average human now earns nearly three times as much money, eats one third more calories, and can expect to live one third longer. In fact, it's hard to find any region of the world that's worse off now than it was then, even though the global population has more than doubled over that period.City citizens take up less space, use less energy, and have less impact on natural ecosystems than country livers. The world's cities now contain over half its people, but they occupy less than 3 percent of its land area. Urban growth may worry environmentalists, but living in the country is not the best way to care for the earth. The best thing we can do for the planet is build more skyscrapers. The rich get richer, but the poor do even better. Between 1980 and 2000, the poor doubled their consumption. Nigerians are twice as rich and live nine more years. The percentage of the world's people living in absolute poverty has dropped by over half. The United Nations estimates that poverty was reduced more in the past 50 years than in the previous 500. 16. Ridley's attitude towards the human future is .A. worried B. proud C. concerned D. optimistic17.
