Bellow saw many flaws(缺陷) in modern civilization, and its ability to foster(培养) madness, materialism(唯物主义 )and misleading knowledge.,Principal characters in Bellows fiction have heroic potential(英勇的潜力), and many time they stand in contrast to the negative forces of society(社会的负面影响). Often these characters are Jewish(犹太人) and have a sense of alienation or otherness(转让和差异性).,Themes and style,Jewish life and identity is a major theme in Bellows work, although he bristled at being called a Jewish writer. Bellows work also shows a great appreciation of America, and a fascination with the uniqueness and vibrancy of the American experience. Bellows work abounds in references and quotes from the likes of Marcel Proust and Henry James, but he offsets these high-culture references with jokes. Bellow interspersed autobiographical elements into his fiction, and many of his principal characters were said to bear a resemblance to him.,Novels and novellas,* Dangling Man (1944)晃来晃去的人 * The Victim (1947) 受害者 * The Adventures of Augie March (1953) 奥吉玛琪历险记 * Seize the Day (1956) 只争朝夕 * Henderson the Rain King (1959) 雨王汉德森 * Herzog (1964) 赫尔索格 * Mr. Sammlers Planet (1970)塞姆勒先生的行星 * Humboldts Gift (1975), won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize洪堡的礼物 * The Deans December (1982) 院长的十二月 * More Die of Heartbreak (1987) 更多人死于悲痛 * A Theft (1989) 盗窃 * The Actual (1997) 真实的 * Ravelstein (2000) 拉维尔斯坦,ACHIEVEMENTs,The Adventures of Augie March (1953) 奥吉玛琪历险记, Herzog (1964) 赫尔索格, Mr. Sammlers Planet (1970)塞姆勒先生的行星获全国图书奖 Humboldts Gift (1975), won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize洪堡的礼物获普利策奖。,His best novels are as follows:,Looking for Mr. Green,Looking for Mr. Green is one of the excellent short stories by Saul Bellow. This short story embodies Saul Bellows affirmative morality as consistently expressed in his other works, in which Bellows attempts to instruct individuals how to cope with(处理,应对) the surroundings, how to find the meaning of existence in common life and how to assume responsibilities towards themselves and others as well, and how to maintain confidence in individuals and human beings as well.,Looking for Mr. Green,George Grebe is the marginalized intellectual(边缘化知识分子)whose new job on the first day is to look for a man named Green in the Negro district(黑人区) after the Great Depression(大萧条) and deliver the relief checks. Grebes process of looking for Mr. Green is also symbolically his pilgrimage(表象) of seeking for the life values in the falling world of appearances, during which Grebes inner world radiates(闪耀) humanity in his metaphysical contemplations and persistent pursuit of truth(形而上学的思索人类对真理的执着追求和人生价值的追求朝 圣). And the process of looking for Mr. Green is more philosophically meaningful than the result in that Grebes attitude towards life and faith finds expression in the process.,Looking for Mr. Green (1968) is Mosbys memories and other stories in an excellent short story .,
