This story may have happened not long ago- but it was a lesson which has stayed with me and helped me ever since. It was Thanksgiving and I was volunteering with my parents at a shelter for the needy. We served hot food to whoever came in. Most of our dinners looked like they had been having hard times。 their clothes were worn out and dirty. Then, a man came in, who looked anything but needy. He was well dressed. I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw ( 下巴 ) dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food. The closer he came to my service station , the more I muttered (小声抱怨 ). What was this man doing? Surely he wasn t going to take food which was meant for those who were really in need! Then my mother quietly took me to one side. She said, “ You have thought that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical, hunger, etc. And this gentleman doesn t seem to have any of those problems. But what if his needs are emotional(情感的) ? What if he needs comfort, friends, or just to be among other human beings? Her words hit me like a ton of bricks! I felt like I should apologize to the man- but I didn t. About a week later the shelter received a large donation from an anonymous source. I can t help but wonder if it came from that man. Now, whenever I meet someone I remember my mother s lesson and try to send kindness their way, no matter how they look. Needs aren t always seen. But kindness always makes a difference. 36. Mark Hoffman and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh products from the garden. The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffman has been experimenting and working with shade (阴凉 ) plantings. He says, “ The bottom line here is that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.”For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours direct sunshine a day, especially morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours full sun a day. It also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients and water. Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun. Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticide (农药 ). Instead, he planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Some insects dislike shade, and the hottest part day is when they do the worst of their damage. Time of day, sun intensity ( 强度 ), shadows from trees, walls and buildings all influence how much sunlight falls on plants. And people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term “ shade”can describe different amounts of darkness. It can even mean different things in different parts of the world. 41. How many hours of sunshine are enough to keep tomato plants growing in Hoffman s garden? A. five hours a day B. Six hours a day C. Eight hours a day D. Twelve hours a day 42. From the passage we can know that _ . A. plants with wider leaves produce more in full sun. A. environment B. travelling C. agriculture D. lifestyle C Give people a chance before you judge them because you really never know whats going on beneath the surface. I know weve heard this all before, but it is much more difficult to do so in practice. I am always told that judging a person by what others say or my first impression is usually wrong. It s so easy to make assumptions(臆想)and expect about someone, just to find out they were completely false. I know Ive done this too many times! The shy girl turns out to be one of the funniest girls I ever met, the selfish girl is actually very sensitive and loving, the cocky boy is not sure of himself and so on. I hope there is a world where we stop judging a person by what they wear, their hairstyle, their job, their car。 and we simply love and accept them for who they are. Someone may have a bad hair because they over slept, or their clothes dont match because their house burned down and lost everything. All Im saying is, “Can we focus more on whats going on inside a person rather than the outside?” There are so many people who seem like everything is just fine on the outside, but the inside is angry or hurting. They dont know how to just be themselves or theyre afraid to because they may be thought of as the “crazy ” or “strange ” person. I know because I used to be that person. I truly believe everything begins with ourselves. Before we can really stop judging others by the outside we must stop judging ourselves. We must know how we treat ourselves first. Let s stop getting in our own way and accept ourselves and others as we are. 46. Its always not right for us _. A. to give people a chance before we judge them B. to know whats going on beneath the surface C. to learn more before we judge others in practice D. to judge others only by the surface or o thers words47. The underlined word “cocky ” in Paragraph 2 probably means _. A. lovely B. clever C. proud D. stupid 48. When we judge a person, we should pay more attention to _. A. what he wears B. what he does or has C. our first feelings and thoughts D. whats going on inside him精选学习资料 - - - - - - - - - 名师归纳总结 - - - - - - -第 4 页,共 9 页5 / 9 49. Judge a person by his outside. C. Learn to just be yourselves. D. Accept what you and others are. D Language is a way to communicate with each other. We started to learn language when we were born. However, people are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants( 移民 ) are having many problems between the first generation and the second generation because they don t have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their identity, and even more, they are ignoring their parents whose English is not very good. I think most immigrants are trying to preserve their native language in their new country, but this doesn t help very much in getting a good job. My aunt taught Korean to her children not to help them succeed in the US。 she did so, hopefully, to help them establish a Korean identity. Though the second generation is born in the new country, they often get confused about their identity because they look different from others, and also, if they visit their parents country, they will probably feel different from other people there too. My cousins told me that when they visited Korea a few years ago, they felt different from other Koreans. They could even feel in just strolling around the street because they wore different clothes and walked differently. We must realize that language is important and valuable for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort not to be ignored by their children and to make their children understand their background by teaching them the parents language. This is very important, not only for the harmony of the family, but also in helping the second generation establish their identity. 51. According to the text, what is the problem of the first generation immigrants? A. They have lost their identity. B. Their children are losing their identity. C. Their children speak different languages. D. They cannot speak their native language. 52. It can be inferred from the text that _. A. most of the immigrants can t understand EnglishB. most of the immigrants are not successful in careers C. to some degree, the parents are to blame for their kids loss of identityD. the second generation immigrants can t understand their parents language53.
