What makes you happy?Spending time with family was the top answer to that open-ended question, according to an extensive surveymore than 100 questions asked of 1,280 people ages 13-24conducted by The Associated Press on the nature of happiness among American young people.Next was spending time with friends, followed by time with a significant other. And good news for parents: Nearly three-quarters of young people say their relationship with their parents makes them happy."They're my foundation," says Kristiana St. John, 17, a high-school student from Queens in New York. "My mom tells me that even if I do something stupid, she's still going to love. Just knowing that makes me feel very happy and blessed."Other results are more disconcerting. While most young people are happy overall with the way their lives are going, there are racial differences: the poll shows whites to be happier than blacks and Hispanics. A lot of young people feel stress, particularly those from the middle class, and females more than males. You might think money would be clearly tied to a general sense of happiness. Contrary to the common belief, almost no one said "money" when asked what makes them happy, though people with the highest family incomes are generally happier with life. However, having highly educated parents is a stronger predictor of happiness than income.Overwhelmingly, young people think marriage would make them happy and want to be married some day. Most also want to have kids. Finally, when asked to name their heroes, nearly half of respondents mentioned one or both of their parents. The winner, by a nose: Mom. 51. A. tend to avoid it B. have faith in itC. have no idea about itD. take no interest in itB According to the National Highway and Transportation Administration, about 400 people die every year in the U.S. from drowning in their vehicles. So prepare yourself now. The good news is that you can escape a sinking vehicle. But youve got to be quick. According to The University of Manitobas Gordon Geisbrecht, who trains law compulsion officers and other people on underwater-vehicle escape, a person has about a minute to get out alive. Here are his five rules of survival. Rule 1. Don't call 911 until you are out of the car. Youre going to need every second to get out of that vehicle. Worry about calling 911 once youve made it out alive. “Time is critical,” says Geisbrecht. “If you touch your cell phone youre probably going to die.” Rule 2. Unlock the safety belt. Rule 3. Dont open the door! Roll down the window instead. Opening the door is very difficult against the water pressure and it also allows so much water into the vehicle that it will speed up the sinking process. Youll have 30 seconds to a minute until the water rises to the bottom of the passenger windows. This is what Geisbrecht calls the floating period. Remember to break the window. Since most vehicles these days have electronically controlled windows, the circuits(电路) probably will short before you have a chance to roll them down. In that case, youll need a tool to break the window open. “Make sure these tools are within reach at all times,” says Geisbrecht. “And a pair of work gloves is needed otherwise you will cut your hands. Above all, youve got to act quickly.” Rule 4. Children first. Children are going to have a harder time fighting through the rush of water, so push them out if you have to. Geisbrecht suggests starting with the oldest kids and taking the youngest out in your arms. Rule 5. Get out. Swim through the broken window as fast as possible. If youve failed to get that window rolled down or broken, you will have the slightest of chances to escape. Once water fills the car, the pressure will be equalized and you will be able to open the door. But to do this, you will have to be expert at holding your breath in an extremely stressful situation. Geisbrecht says that unless youre a modern-day Houdini, the chances are pretty slim. 55. You are not supposed to call 911 before you get out of a sinking car because _. A. 911 always cant arrive on time B. 911 is of little help in getting you out of the car C. every second counts when you try to get out of the car D. making a phone call may set off an explosion when a car is in water56. In most cases you have to break the window using a tool but not to roll it down because _. A. the tools are within easy reach all the time. B. you have no time to roll the window down. C. it is much easier to break the window than to roll it down. D. the electronically controlled window is likely to be damaged by water. 57. According to the passage, which statement is TRUE? A. It is better to wear gloves when you try to break the windows. B. In water, it is easier to roll down the window than to break it. C. When in the sinking car, parents should push the youngest kid out of the car first. D. It takes more than one minute for water rises to the bottom of passenger windows. 58. Who is Houdini mentioned in the last paragraph probably be? A. A captain who can hold his breath for long and in service now. B. A magician who is good at escaping in difficult situations. C. A swimmer who won gold medal in Olympic Games. D. A robber who is able to break all kinds of windows. CWang Cheng, 20, an English major student at Xiamen University, remembered vividly how he was overwhelmed by the size of the campus when he first arrived. His only solution was to ask for help from his roommates or upperclassmen, but now he has an alternative - he turns to apps on his smartphone, like he does to solve many problems in his daily life. Wangs secret weapon is a mobile application called baodating, which offers various kinds of information that makes campus life easier. Using such applications has been a trend in universities since 2012. Not only do freshmen use it to familiarize themselves with their university, but almost every student regards it as a lifestyle. Wang uses baodating to check his class schedule, class results and lecture information.
