The two were happily playing at Discovery Bay's main beach when Mr. Sun saw something sticking out of the sand next to John's foot. He stopped his son just as the boy was about to step on a 3.5-cm-long needle. "John was barefoot. Think about what might have happened if he had stepped on that needle," said Mr. Sun. "It's a terrible thing to imagine." The Suns' experience shows how serious the pollution problem on the beach is. "Discovery Bay has always been one of my favorite beaches," says Mr. Sun, "but now I'll think carefully before letting my child play here again. He will surely have to put on shoes in the future, and I won't take him into the water. This used to be such a beautiful place. The water was clean and blue with no pollution at all. Now there is garbage everywhere. If nothing is done, a family day at the beach could be a thing of the past." Stephen Chan, a member of a team that has been set up to study the pollution situation there, says, "Medical waste can never be controlled completely. We already know that it is not coming from government hospitals and clinics so we are checking to see if it is coming from private doctors. One of our problems is that there are no laws to help us deal with the people responsible for this pollution." "If there were stricter laws, people might think twice about throwing garbage into sea," says Maggie Tang of Friends of the Earth. Mr. Chan, however, thinks that stricter laws alone will not solve the problem. "We cannot keep an eye on every inch of the coastline," he says. "There will always be people who throw dangerous garbage. I believe it is mainly a matter of education. If people would accept responsibility for what they do with their garbage, we would be much closer to a solution." 36. Which of the following pictures shows "a barefoot"? 37. What does Mr. Sun think of the beach now? A. Unpopular. B. Unsafe. C. Deserted. D. Crowded. 38. According to Stephen Chan, what is the best way to solve the problem at the beach? A. Improve technology to get rid of garbage. B. Hire cleaners to collect dangerous garbage. C. Make laws that punish people polluting the environment. D. Educate people the dangers of polluting the environment.BSleeping on the Job I love sleeping. It's something I'm good at. There's nothing better than nodding off on the sofa in front of the TV and when my head hits the pillow at night, I have no problem falling into a deep sleep within minutes. There is one place where I never snooze and that's at work - but new research suggests I should! The idea of you and your colleagues heading off for a lie-down in the afternoon may seem odd, but some companies such as Google and The Huffington Post actually encourage it. This isn't because their employees are insomniacspeople who struggle to get to sleep at nightbut because it's thought that a power-nap (小睡) makes them more refreshed and more awake, and this in turn makes them more productive. But will this idea catch on? An Australian health writer called Thea O'Connor is a founder of a campaign called Nap Now which is trying to make sleeping at work more acceptable. She calls herself a "naptivist"! She says, "I think that our culture is a bit crazy not to embrace (accept) it it's time to change the present work practices which are all about working longer and harder." So should we all be taking a sleeping bag and pillow to work with us? A few years ago, research by the East of England Development Agency found 30% of people have their best ideas in bed compared to just 11% who have them at their desk. That suggests people are more creative when they are relaxedand the agency has called for companies to put beds in the workplace. A nap in the afternoon is nothing new. In certain hot countries, such as Spain, a short rest or sleep in the afternooncalled a siestais perfectly normal. But my problem with having 40 winks (眨眼) in the afternoon is that I usually fall into a deep sleep. But maybe we should break from the traditional nine-to-five work culture and embrace the siesta. The UK's Sleep Council claims that the nine-to-five working day does not fit into the natural sleeping pattern of the human race and says that bosses need to introduce a more sleep- friendly working day. What do you think? Would you feel comfortable going to sleep in the officeor do you secretly do it already? 39. What is the writer's attitude toward sleeping at work? A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Unconcerned. D. Favorable. 40. Why do Google and The Huffington Post encourage people to sleep in the office? A. People will be more accepting of work. B. People will be more productive at work. C. People won't suffer from sleeping trouble. D. People won't make serious mistakes at work. 41. According to the UK's Sleep Council, the normal working day . A. does not match people's normal sleep cycle B. does not affect people's normal sleep cycle C. improves people's normal sleep cycle D. builds people's normal sleep cycle 42. The writer's main purpose in the passage is to . A. reason and evaluate B. examine and persuade C. inform and suggest D. argue and discussC One of my students asked an amazing question, and I loved it so much that I want to share it with the entire IWT community. She asked my group of top-performing IWT readersmembers of Ramit's Brain Trustwhat we'd learned from our parents and what we're GRATEFUL for. I included my response below.Amy SmithA few months ago we talked about beliefs we've had from childhood, many of them not so positive. I wanted to hear some more positive answers, so I presented this question. QUESTION: What is a specific lesson you've learned from your parents that you're grateful for? I realize that I am so grateful to my mother (far from perfect but REALLY unusual). She always goes exactly for what she wants to go for (aromatherapy, bowling, photography, getting her PhD, having a farm). I thought all women were like that but this isn't the case.
