have caused its own demise by clearcutting huge swaths of forest, a new study has found. The Nasca are best known for leaving behind large Nazca Lines carved into the surface of the vast, empty desert plain that lies between the Peruvian towns of Nazca and Palpa.Though the Lines have caused many interpretations, including the suggestion that they were created by aliens, most scholars now think they were sacred pathways that Nasca people followed during their ancient ceremonies. The civilization disappeared mysteriously around 1,500 years ago, after apparently prospering during the first half of the first millennium AD. in the valleys of south coastal Peru.Scientists have previously suggested a massive El Nino event caused the Nasca's demise, but new research suggests that deforestation may have also played an important role.David Beresford Jones from the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the UK.'s Cambridge University gathered plant remains in the lower Ica Valley.Based on this evidence and plant samples collected by coresearcher Alex ChepstowLusty of the French Institute of Andean Studies in Lima, the scientists found that the Nasca cleared huge areas of forest to make way for agriculture. The native huarango tree, which once covered what is now a desert area, was gradually replaced by crops such as cotton and maize. This tree was a crucial part of the desert's fragile ecosystem, serving to enhance soil fertility and moisture and help hold the Nasca's narrow, vulnerable irrigation channels in place.Eventually, the people cut down so many trees that they reached a tipping point at which the arid ecosystem was damaged, the researchers found. At this point a major El Nino event likely occurred.Without the huarango cover, when El Nino did strike, the river downcut into its floodplain, Nasca irrigation systems were damaged and the area became unworkable for agriculture. 1The underlined word not quite sure why the Nasca civilization disappearedDEl Nino was the only cause of the disappearance of the Nasca civilization【语篇解读】 对于南美洲古代Nasca文明为什么会消失,人们有种种推测,但最新的研究发现,滥伐森林也是导致其灭亡的重要原因。 III. There is an English saying:“_1_”Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body._2_Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body.People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise._3_If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body.In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated (忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program._4_5_They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.ALaughter can prolong one's life.BAs a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh.CThe reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.DIt increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing;it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet.EAlthough laughter helps cure the disease, doctors still cannot put this theory into clinic practice.FLaughter is the best medicine.GThey have found that laughter really can improve people's health.【语篇解读】 笑是世界上最好的良药,笑的好处如此之多以致我们没有理由拒绝大笑,那么就快乐地迎接每一天吧。 2G上一句话的begun to look into laughter and the effects和本项的have found that laughter really can improve people's health吻合,也引出了下一段的论证结果。3D上一句话的similar effects to physical exercise的表现就是本项提到的increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing;it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet。4C上一句话的tolerated(忍耐)the pain和本项的reduce pain seems to be吻合,说明上一句是结果,紧接着给出的就是对这个结果的解释。5B本项的hold laughter clinics in which they help to improve their patients' condition和下一句话的their patients吻合。IV. There was a man Ted who loved his wife deeply. He wanted to buy a present for his wife.So he went to the town and looked around some jewellery .Because of his
