It was a career move for my husband, and our 20yearold daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79yearold mother suffered a stroke (中风). Being strong and independent, she continues to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldnt look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organization offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening charitable organization. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organization I had been looking forEasy Care Gardening (ECG)!There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to explore Sydneys North Shore that I might not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise. Finally, there are all those wonderful people who we call “clients (客户)”, but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and stories they have to tellthe family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia. I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.5Why did the author move to Sydney?AShe planned to volunteer there. BHer husband would work there.CShe was very keen on adventures. DShe had to look after her sick mother.6What made the author choose to be a gardening volunteer?AHer own experience. BThe tips of her friends.CThe popularity of ECG. DHer gardening skills.7What do the volunteers at ECG have in common?AThey make friends with their clients.BThey like to explore Sydneys North Shore.CThey are of similar age and background.DThey are kindhearted with the same interest. Do You Have a Positive Attitude?Who would you rather hang around with? So if youve been feeling tired, put on a happy face and you just might feel better soon. But how can you have a positive attitude when life is hard? Its more than just turning lifes lemons into lemonade. _4_ But its worth it.A positive attitude doesnt mean ignoring lifes troubles. It just means looking for the good in things, rather than being a pessimist and concentrating on the bad in things. Sometimes your attitude can make all the difference.Identify (识别) those areas of your life that might not be going so well. _5_ Focus on one at a time and think of ways you can find the positive in things.AThe answer is to have a positive attitude.BHaving a positive attitude can take some hard work.CThey are likely to make you have negative thoughts.DHaving a positive attitude can also reduce your stress level.EIf you have a positive attitude, youre more fun to be around.FWhen you feel better physically, you naturally feel better mentally.GIts no surprise that people enjoy being around positive people rather than negative people.一、选词填空1.midnight2.lip3.lap4.accident5.whispered6.in memory of7.operation8.first aid9.bite10.assist二、阅读理解1.D考查细节理解。根据第二段中的“Unluckily, Bradens dog Chewy found his hearing aids on the floor and destroyed themnot once, but twicethey had to be replaced”可知,Braden的狗弄坏了他的助听器,所以Braden需要更换一副新的。 根据第四段内容“Those words stuck in Bradens mind, and he realized not every child who needed hearing aids could afford them. Recently the 10yearold decided to start a GoFundMe page to raise money for those who arent so lucky”可知,Braden了解到有些儿童买不起助听器,因此他想通过创建GoFundMe网页来筹资帮助这些贫困的听障儿童。 根据第五段中的“We werent sure how it would turn out”可推断出,创建筹款网页之初,Braden和他的母亲并不确定结果会怎样。 根据倒数第二段中的“hes learned that if you put a small idea into action, amazing things can happen”以及最后一段的内容可知,Braden通过募集资金学到一件事:将小小的想法付诸于行动,会有惊人的事情发生。 根据第一段中的第二句“It was a career move for my husband.” 根据第一段中的“However, just before leaving England, my 79yearold mother suffered a stroke. But she couldnt look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organization offering volunteer help.” 根据第二段最后一句“We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.”
