That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide. In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water. Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didnt show any sleep uneasiness at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱)red light, they did not.” Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光)cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle. He says theres a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.21Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because _.Athey are similar to humans in dealing with colorsBthey are easy to observe and studyCthey are active at night and sleep during the dayDthey are sensitive to colors like human beings22What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?AThey dont sleep well. Researchers say the answer is a diet of more fruit and vegetables, which may make young people calmer, happier and more energetic in their daily life.Psychology researchers from New Zealands University of Otago studied the relationship between day-to-day emotions and food consumption(消费). The study by Drs. Conner and her team , is published in the British Journal of Health Psychology. For the research, a total of 281 young adults completed all Internet-based daily food diary for 21 days. These participants completed a survey giving details of their age, genter , weight and height. Those with a history of an eating disorder were not included. On each of the 21 days, participants logged into their diary each evening and wrote how they felt using nine positive and nine negative adjectives. They were also asked five questions about what they had eaten that day. Specifically, participants were asked to report the number of servings eaten of fruit ,vegetables and several categories of unhealthy foods like biscuits/cookies, potato crisps, and cakes/muffins. The results showed a strong day-to-day relationship between more positive mood and higher fruit and vegetable consumption, but not other foods. To understand which comes firstfeeling positive or eating healthier foodsConner and her team ran other analyses and found that eating fruits and vegetables helped improvements in positive mood the next day, suggesting that healthy foods may improve mood. “After further analysis we thought that young people would need to consume about seven to eight total serving of fruits and vegetables perday to notice a meaningful positive change. One serving of fruit or vegetable is about the size that could fit in your palm, or half a cup,” Conner said. Physical Exercise and Your Daily Life D The turning point of my life was my decision to give up a promising career in business to study music. My parents, although sympathetic, disapproved of music as an occupation. This was understandable, I thought, in view of my family background. My grandfather taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill College, and it was only the threiftiness of my grandmother that kept the wolf at bay. As a consequence, My parents insisted upon college instead of a music school. Before my graduation from Columbia University, the family met with severe fanacial difficulty and I felt it my duty to leave college and take a job. Thus was I launched upon a business careerwhich I always think of as the wasted years. Now, I do not for a moment mean to disparage business; my whole point is that it was not for me. My one ambition was to save enough money to quit and go to Europe to study music. I used to get up at dawn to practice before I left for "downtown", upsetting my poor mother by having a hasty breakfast at the last minute. Instead of lunching with my business associates, I would seek out some cheap café, order a mean meal and draw my harmony exercise. I continued to make money, and finally, bit by bit, accumulated enough to enable me to go abroad. The family being once more wealthy, and my help no longer necessary. I resigned from my position and feeling like a man released from jail, sailed for Europe. I stayed four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working before and enjoyed every minute of it. "Enjoyed" is too mild a word. I walked on air. I really lived. I was a free man and I was doing what I loved to do and what I was meant to do. If I had stayed in business, I might be a really wealthy man today. But I do not believe I would have made a success of living. I would have given up all those inner satisfaction that money can never buy and that are too often sacrificed when a man's primary goal is finacial success. Money is a wonderful thing, but it is possible to pay too high a price on it.32. What caused the author to leave college and take a job? A. Expectations of his parents. B.
