Gym class in middle school was the worst. I was always the last kid to be picked. The only reason why I was even picked at all was that I was good friends with the best player in the class. In the eighth grade, I finally decided I was sick and tired of being a scrub. I dedicated(致力于) that entire summer to getting better. I spent every day playing basketball, practicing for hours in the gym. I remember playing pick-up games with one group of kids until they all eventually got tired and left. Then a whole different group of kids would come in and Id play with them too. After months of this devoted routine, something amazing started to happen. People began passing me the ball. They trusted me to take the shot. They even started picking me first to be on their team! The last game of organized basketball I ever played was the culmination(巅峰) of all my hard work. Against a team far more talented than mine, I scored 27 points. We still lost, but I walked away from that game feeling like a total champion. What I learned from those years of rejection and waiting to be picked was that life really isnt any different. Most of us spend our lives waiting for opportunities to land in our laps. Whats worse, sometimes we feel entitled(有资格的) to them. And when things dont go our waywhen no one picks uswe find something or someone to blame.I could have complained when no one wanted me on their team. I could have convinced myself that I deserved to be picked. But I didnt. Instead, I took matters into my own hands and put in the work to become better.Should we have our fate controlled by a few people who in most cases dont even know us? I certainly dont think so. We have a choice. We can choose to create something meaningful, to move forward with our ideas.4. What can we know about the author in the first paragraph?A. He was always to be picked.B. To create something meaningful.D. To have our fate controlled by others.(3)Many parents worry that their childrens use of electronic devices will bring harm to their children, so they set strict limits on their use of electronic devices. But theres another device-related danger that parents may be completely ignoringsecond-hand screen time. With second-hand screen time, kids are indirectly exposed to screens being used by someone else close to them. Watching parents use their devices a lot from an early age can lead children to become addicted to them as they grow up, research suggests. Also, children are likely to show more acting-out behaviors when parents spend too much time on their devices. Often, this is the only way kids can get a parents attention. Spending too much time on electronic devices, especially in the presence of a child, also sends the message that the device is more important than the child. This can lead to a breakdown in the parent-child relationship. This does not mean that parents should not use electronic devices while their children are present. It does mean that parents need to set limits on their own screen time, just as they would for their children. For adults, devices are often a necessary part of their work, as well as personal tasks and activities. While cutting down on their screen time may not be easy, it is worth the effort. Parents can now take some practical steps to get started. One of the simplest is setting up certain times and places where devices wont be used. For example, device-free mealtimes are important for many reasons, and this is an easy way to limit the use. Other ideas include not using devices in the restroom, when having a conversation with someone, or when playing games with the kids. In addition, parents should not use “do as I say, not as I do” to send confusing messages to their children. We can tell kids that its important to curb their device use, but if their experience with parents from infancy on is watching them use devices frequently, they are much more likely to follow that model. Therefore, parents should set the right example for their children. 8.What might cause second-hand screen time?A. Childrens overuse of electronic devices. B. Watching parents use their devices a lot. C. Strict limits on childrens use of devices. D. Seeing strangers directly exposed to screens. 9. What is the second paragraph mainly about?A. The risks of second-hand screen time. B. The forms of second-hand screen time.C. The causes of second-hand screen time.D. The features of second-hand screen time.10. What should parents do to improve the situation?A. Say no to the use of electronic devices.B. Make an effort to play games with kids. C. Try to reduce the amount of screen time. D. Find more reasons to have meals with kids. 11. Which of the following can be used to explain the last paragraph?A. It is better to teach by example than by speech.B. He who does not listen to the old man loses at sight. C. Nothing is impossible (or difficult) to the man who will try.D. Knowledge will not be acquired without pain and application. (4)Recently, a computer virus called “WannaCry” hit about 100 countries worldwide. With computer security agencies taking responsive measures, the attack has weakened. Actually, the virus is not totally newit used the EternalBlue exploit developed by the United States National Security Agency that was stolen by hackers. The incident teaches us at least two lessons. First, there is nothing absolutely safe in the Internet age. Even if developed by law enforcers, a powerful computer attack tool is at risk of being acquired by lawbreakers. In early 2016, there was a debate between the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and some Internet companies over the question of whether electronic device producers should leave a “backdoor” for legal enforcers to better strike at terrorists. Now we have the answerNo.No one can ensure that such a “backdoor” will never be used by lawbreakers and the best choice is not to open such a door in the first place.Second, it is important for computer users to purchase and install genuine(正版) software. If a computer user updates his or her windows operating system regularly, he or she is relatively safe. A patch(补丁) released Microsoft in March had already filled in a security loophole in the Windows operating system that could be made use of by the new virus. However, only genuine software could be updated. Computers that use pirated(盗版) copies of the windows operating system have no choice; they will be exposed to the risk.Fortunately, with the protection over copyrights(版权) strengthened, increasingly more people are acquiring the habit of using genuine products. Hopefully, next time the virus will not spread so rampantly(猖獗).12. What can we learn about “WannaCry” ?A. The virus is out of control. B. It is a totally new computer virus.C. Effective measures have been taken.D. Only some Asian countries are influenced by the virus.13. Whats the authors attitude towards a “backdoor” left for legal enforcers? A. Worried. B. Indifferent. C. Negative. D. Supportive.14. Why is it important to purchase and use genuine software?A. It can save you much money.B. It is safer and can be updated.C. It helps you form a good habit.D. It can store all of your personal information. 15. What may be the best title for the text?A. Try to use genuine productsB. How to protect your computerC. An unstoppable computer virusD. Lessons learnt from WannaCry attackPart B根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As a student, part of the process of becoming a better writer is learning to revise (修改) ones written work. 16 You should help your child know that revision addresses organization, focus and purpose, and helps a writer decide whether he or she addresses an audience appropriately and explains his or her thoughts on a clear and logical basis. Editing is the process of reviewing a piece for errors, word choice, clarity, tone and the like. Proofreading is the final quality check for correct spelling and proper punctuation.Secondly, you need to tell your child that the writing process is made up of several steps. 17 But advanced writers understand that a finished piece should be polishedan impossibility if that piece has not been carefully revised at least once. Your child should think of the writing process as separate steps, each of which is important: planning, outlining, writing, revising, editing, and proofreading. 18 Thus, thirdly, you are supposed to discuss your childs written work at the conceptual (概念的) level. If he or she is trying to make the readers believe something in an essay, it is important to ask relevant questions when revising that essay. Is the argument well thought out? How did he or she support that argument? 19 Overall, revision is about making writing stronger. 20 You can read a newspaper article or essay with your child, and then, ask questionsdid the introduction make you want to keep reading? Was the main point clear? Pointing out areas you think were confusing or not as strong as they could be, and offer suggestions on how you would try to improve those areas.A. Adding or deleting words isnt revising.B. Revision is different from proofreading or editing.C. Therefore, make sure to show your child how to revise.D. Is there information in the essay that is not related to the topic?E. Is the argument in the essay strong enough to make readers convinced?F. As a parent, you should impress on your child the challenge of revising the essay.G. Beginners are taught that writing involves developing an idea and putting it on paper.1-3 DDB 4-7 BDAB 8-11BACA 12-15 CCBD 16-20 BGAEC
