中考英语复习-九年级短文阅读1A Cool Mobile HomeStudents at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have built a mobile home that runs on solar power. Fully charged, it can travel 600 kilometers and on a sunny day, it can travel up to 730 kilometers. The 22 students who made the Stella Vita are members of Solar Team Eindhoven a group that believes that the future of sustainable transport is solar-powered.Solar Team Eindhoven describes the Stella Vita as a “self-sustaining house on wheels”. The mobile home makes its own power for driving, but also for taking showers, watching television, making coffee, charging computers and phones, etc. When the Stella Vita isnt being driven, its roof can be raised to give people inside more space, while more solar panels can also be pulled out. This doubles the size of the solar panels to 17.5 square meters. With a larger size of solar panels, it only takes about two or three days to charge the mobile home to100%.Inside the Stella Vita is a seating area with a table and a small kitchen space. The mobile home also has a double bed, a toilet and a shower.Last September, Solar Team Eindhoven started a 3,000-kilometer trip through Europe with the Stella Vita. Some problems with the mobile home meant that for some parts of the trip it needed to be moved on a trailer. However, the team fixed the problems and was able to drive it for large parts of the trip. The Library Lets You Borrow People, Not BooksWe all have a story to tell, and perhaps if we shared our stories more, we might understand each other better even break down social prejudice. This is the idea behind the Human Library. The Human Library was created by Danish reporter Ronni Abergel in the year 2000 together with his brother Dany and workmates Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen.Ronni Abergel first came up with the idea. He thought why not organize events where you can borrow people instead of books? “I think it could work because the library is one of the few places in our community where everyone is welcome, whether youre rich or poor, homeless or living in a big house,” he said.In the Human Library events, human “books” talk about their life stories. Most human “books” are people who have experienced different kinds of prejudice and discrimination. It could be because of their skin color, beliefs or a disability or because of their life choices. In the events, “readers” can learn about ways in which theyre different from each other. After learning about the stories, “readers” maybe brave to challenge their own prejudice and then become more inclusive. One of the most active “books” is 81-year-old Yoka who grew up in a Jewish family in the Netherlands. Luckily, she didnt get caught by the Nazis when she wa syoung. As one of the few survivors left, Yoka believes she can help people understand what happens when discrimination goes unchallenged.Altogether, there are over 1,000 human “books”, each with a valuable story. The most important thing is not to judge the human “books” by their covers but to first take a look inside.Repairing Ancient BooksAt the National Library of China (NLC) in Beijing, some repairers are shaking off centuries of old dust to repair the ancient books.Xie Jincheng, one of the repairers, has been doing this for about 10 years. However, he can only repair a few pages a day, and it sometimes takes him several days to fix just one page. It takes quite a long time to search for the right paper to repair the books. “Sometimes its impossible to get similar paper, so we need to process the paper ourselves,” Xiesaid.Du Weisheng is another repairer at the NLC. Ancient book repairing is a lifelong job for him. Du, 69, has worked as an ancient book repairer since 1974. He is happy to see young people joining his team and choosing to stay. “They have good educational backgrounds, and bring a more scientific way to the book repairing,” Du said. In 2013, a training center was set up at the NLC to train more professional repairers. The NLC is now home to some of Chinas best-known literary treasures. It houses more than 3 million ancient Chinese books. Its the biggest collection of its kind.Science and technology also helps with the protection of the ancient treasures. In 2016, a national-level database of ancient Chinese books went online for public use. Nearly 21,000 copies of such books at the NLC are included in the database. Readers can read them online at any time without causing any danger to them. Thanks to the repairers and other workers at the NLC, the public no longer have difficulty finding these ancient books and they can know more about the fantastic ancient Chinese culture.A Mobile HomeDo you want to travel with your house walking with you? With Encho Enchevs idea of a mobile home, your home can travel to any place in the future. The mechanical legs of your home can bring itself and you to even the wildest and most faraway places. The home can be built in the near future.According to Enchev, a designer in Bulgaria, the house will be big enough for two people and a pet. Enchev loves beautifull and scape, and he also finds that more and more people would like to get close to nature without missing the comfort of their homes. So he is inspired and tries to show the world how a home in the future could meet peoples need.Supported by a collection of mechanical legs, the mobile home can either stand like a man or lie on the ground like a traditional house. Enchev plans to use different technologies and methods to make the mechanical legs strong. At the same time, the legs can take the mobile home anywhere, including climbing a mountain or standing on a cliff.Inside the mobile home, the design is modern, high-tech and simple. All the windows are using the “smart glass” technology. You can see or hide from the outside world as you wish. The bathroom is in the middle of the mobile home, so it isnt near any windows. There is a large space under the living area for people to use. Other things also include mountain bikes, chairs, tables, a balcony, an emergency generator, a BBQ unit and toolboxes.Filled with plenty of smart technology, Enchevs mobile home is all about convenience at the end of the day.The100-Day ProjectElleLuna is a designer, painter, and writer. She used to work as a fantastic designer on apps, such as Uber. However, she quit her job in her 30s andstarted the 100-Day Project. It was Michael Bierut who first used the 100-Day Project at the Yale School of Art: each student chose something to do every day for 100 days. For example, one student made a poster in under a minute every day for 100 days; another danced every day and made a video. In 2014, Luna and her group started the 100-Day Project online. Everyone can take part in it. Its simple choose a creative project, do it every day for 100 days, and share your process online. For the 100-Day Project, its not just about what you have finished its more about the process.A hundred days! Even Luna herself was questioning before she decided to jump in, “CanI finish it? Will I push through when Im busy? Will I share even when I cant do it well? Will I show up every day?” Luna did it anyway. In the first year, Luna herself finished 100 days of self-portraits. If you can dream it, you can do it. People of different ages joined in. Hillary Patrick, a want-to-be artistand mom of two, finished a project of embroidery while she had to look after two kids.Ar eyou hungry to start a creative project? Do you want to be a part of a group that celebrates “process”? Start thinking about your project, and invitefriends to join, too. As there is a famous saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
