从电脑字数统计情况看，文章累计词数1680个，题目词数720,阅读理解题总词数2400。其阅读速度为：24003569个词分(06和07两年都为72词/分)。从数字上看，这个速度高于高考英语科设定的基本要求65词/分，低于教学大纲的要求70-80词分。但是教学大纲的要求与高考考试说明的要求是有质的区别的：中学生平时的阅读是在具体目的不甚明确、没有太大外界压力的情况下进行的，采取的阅读方法基本为略读（skimming），也就是迅速阅读文章，以了解其主旨要义、作者态度等。而高考中的阅读活动则并非如此，考生既需要略读，以获取一些整体性信息；也需要查读（scanning），以获取所需的细节性信息。另外，考生还需要一些时间考虑试题的解答。因此，考生在考场中的实际阅读速度必须大于69词分。所选文章的结构紧密完整，内容丰富。语言地道、原汁原味,句型灵活多变,复杂难句比较多，词汇量大。出现了一些影响题目解答的新课标词汇，如abandon,delicate,sympathize.。对学生通过构词手段猜测生词的能力有很高的要求，如unrealistic,accordingly,misstep,shelf
