        1. Directions: A. Title: Only Stricter Traffic Laws Can Prevent Accidents B. Word Limit: about 200 words C. Your composition should be based on the Outline given in Chinese below: 1. 2. a. Only Stricter Traffic Laws Can Prevent Accidents Though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we cites the incredible slaughter of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor-car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly mutilated each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel, his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year olds and utterly selfish. The surprising thing is that society smiles so benignly on the motorist and seems to condone his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; the countryside is desecrated by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten. It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, laws of some countries are notoriously lax and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate.2.Directions: A. Title: Parents Are Too Permissive With Their Children Nowadays     B. Word Limit: about 200 words         C. Your composition should be based on the Outline given in Chinese below:1. Parents Are Too Permissive With Their Children Nowadays There are countless articles on child care in magazines and newspapers. With so much unsolicited advice flying about, mum and dad just don't know what to do any more. In the end, they do nothing at all. So, from early childhood, the kids are in charge and parents' lives are regulated according to the needs of their offspring. When the little dears develop into teenagers, they take complete control. Lax authority over the years makes adolescent rebellion against parents all the more violent. If the young people are going to have a party, for instance, parents are asked to leave the house. Their presence merely spoils the fun. What else can the poor parents do but obey?Children are hardy creatures and most of them survive the harmful influence of extreme permissiveness which is the normal condition in the modern household. But a great many do not. The spread of juvenile delinquency in our own age is largely due to parental laxity. Mother, believing that little Johnny can look after himself, is not at home when he returns from school, so little Johnny roams the streets. The dividing-line between permissiveness and sheer negligence is very fine indeed. The psychologists have much to answer for. They should keep their mouths shut and let parents get on with the job. And if children are knocked about a little bit in the process, it may not really matter too much. At least this will help them to develop vigorous views of their own and give them something positive to react against. Perhaps there's some truth in the idea that children who've had a surfeit of happiness in their childhood emerge like stodgy puddings and fail to make a success of life.3.Directions:         A. Title: People Should Be Rewarded According To Ability, Or To Age And Experien ce         B. Word Limit: about 200 words         C. Your composition should be based on the Outline given in Chinese below: 1. People Should Be Rewarded According To Ability, Or To Age And Experience Young men and women join the hierarchy and take their place in the queue. They go to the very end of the queue and stay there no matter how brilliant they are. What they know is much less important than whom they know and how old they are. What they know is much less important than whom they know and how old they are. If they are able, their abilities will be acknowledged and rewarded in due course - that is, after twenty or thirty years have passed. There seems to be a gigantic conspiracy against young people. While on the one hand society provides them with better educational facilities, on the other it does its best to exclude them from the jobs that really matter. There are exceptions, of course. Some young people do manage to break through the barrier despite the restriction, but the great majority have to wait patiently for years before they can really give full rein to their abilities. This means that, in most fields, the views of young people are never heard because there is no one to represent them. President Kennedy was one of the notable exceptions. One of the most tragic aspects of his assassination is that mankind was deprived of a youthful leader.Resentment is the cause of a great deal of bitterness. The young resent the old because they feel deprived of the good things life has to offer. The old resent the young because they are afraid of losing what they have. A man of fifty or so might say, 'Why should a young rascal straight out of school out of school earn more than I do? But if the young rascal is more able, more determined, harder-working than his middle-aged critic, why shouldn't he? Employers should recognize ability and reward it justly. This would remove one of the biggest causes of friction between old and young and ultimately it would lead to a better society.'4.Directions:         A. Write an essay of about 200 words.         B. Your essay should be based on the outline below: 1. 发展句: a. University Merger University merger, a hot topic both on and off campus, has received much public attention. People's attitudes towards it vary greatly. Some people favor it as an important step that universities take towards the goal of first-rate world universities. They argue that, only through mergers can universities give full play to their own advantages and make up for their disadvantages. Take the merger between Tsinghua University and the Institute of Applied Arts as an example. The former's strengths in the field of high technology complement the latter's reputation for art. They also point out that university mergers will increase the competitive power of Chinese universities in the world. In spite of these arguments, there are those who see it as a hasty decision which has some potential problems. They claim, for instance, located far away from each other, the universities involved in a merger are usually faced with the tough problem of management. In my opinion, university merger has more advantages than disadvantages, but universities should take into account the potential dangers resulting from mergers. V5B-S.i   nowadays, with the improvement of the peoples living standard, some people form a habit of raising small or domestic animals as pets. some raise small dogs or cats as their pets while others raise various birds or fishes as their pets. there are still even some people raising snakes and other unusual animals as their pets. K_QCYS .  lQBM0|n  Does anyone have the same opinion of raising animals as pets? no, some people object to the idea of raising animals as pets. to them, animals have their own right to live a natural life like human beings. on the other hand, the way people raise animals as pets have a negative influence on the surroundings such as dogs barking at midnight, dogs chasing people on the street and so on. whats more, some animals will transmit some diseases. in my opinion, i do not like the idea to raise animals at pets. animals have their own right to lead a life as they like. we should not deprive them of their natural right. in this way, we will live in a peaceful world in harmony with the other living creatures. kTJ<Dv;  owning a private car 'H3e  1. 目前,有越来越多的人拥有私家车;(图表略) 9cbI3rGz  2. 拥有私家车的利与弊; D.(  3. 结论。 .)q;Z  参考范文 &T+atLN  Nowadays , there are more and more people owning private cars. on the one hand, some wealthy people who either are the boss of the private company or the white-collar managers in big companies have their private cars. on the other hand, some young people who are future-minded buy private cars ahead of their income by loans from banks. 3r<Q7e  Is it a good or bad thing to have a private car? just as a coin has two sides , so there are both advantages and disadvantages of having a private car. so far as its advantages are concerned, there are two examples for this. first , it plays a very important part in providing its owner with convenience, enabling the owner to go where he wants to quickly and easily. second, it can help its owner to save a lot of time which may be wasted by waiting for other vehicles. however, it also has its disadvantages . for one thing, it will have a negative effect on both the crowded traffic system and the environment in the long run. for another, it places burden on the public utility in providing more parking lots. xbe$Q  In short , owning a private car has both its advantages and disadvantages. it is advisable that we should pay much attention to the environmental protection by not having a private car if we have little or no practical use of the private car16媒体与名流. 17保护大自然. 18我们就要断水了! 19汽车与空气污染. 20你们把孩子惯坏了!社会热点话题(16)Media & CelebritiesOne hundred years ago, people became famous for what they had achieved. Todays celebrities, however, often do not become known for any enduring(永久的) achievement, they are simply famous for being famous with the help of the media. They are distingnished by their image or trademark and they have nothing great but a big name. That is to say, the focus of public attention has begun to shift away from knowing what such people did to knowing what they looked like. With the arrival of television, the faces of all kinds of celebrites became as familiar as those we saw across the breakfast table. We came to know more about the lives of our favorite celebrities than we did about most of the people we know personally, no matter they are movie stars, fashion models, professional athletes, and even cartoon characters. In a word, celebrities are created by the media, and they are exactly like us except for the attention they get from the media.社会热点话题(17)Preserving Natural ResourcesEver since man appeared on the earth, mans survival has been heavily relying on nature. Almost everything we use in our everyday life comes from nature. With the development of technology and population growth, the amount and range of materials used has increased at an alarming rate. However, natural resources are not inexhaustible. Some reserves are already on the brink of exhaustion and there is no hope of replacing them. The widespread water shortage is an example in point. If man continued to squander natural resources with no thought for the future, the whole world would be in a mess.Time is running out. It is up to us to take effective measures before the situation gets out of hand.社会热点话题(18)GLOBAL SHORTAGE OF FRESH WATERPeople often think that water will never be used up. There is plenty of water, such as rain, water from the rivers and wells. In fact water is rather limited on the earth. With the rapid increase of population and fast development of industries, water is more needed than before. Some big cities in China are facing the problem of water shortage already. What should we do about the water shortage? I think, people should be made aware of the real situation about the water. And certain laws should be made that no water will be polluted. We have to protect the existing water resources and develop new ones. In this way I believe that our cities will not be thirsty for water in the future.社会热点话题(19)CARS AND AIR POLLUTIONCars have created a lot of serious problems in our world. All the time, they are pumping huge amounts of waste gases into the atmosphere, causing disease and even death. One possible solution is to design and develop clean cars and clean fuels. But it may take decades for the new models to completely replace the traditional ones.Another solution is to develop modern public transportation systems and restrict the use of private cars. If the price of petrol rises constantly and the public vehicles are efficient and convenient enough, most people will not drive private cars. On the whole, the elimination of air pollution needs the co-efforts from the government and the public. This problem will be solved only with the help of science and technology.社会热点话题(20)PARENTS ARE TOO PERMISSIVE WITH THEIR CHILDREN NOWADAYSThere are countless articles on childcare in magazines and newspapers. With so much unsolicited advice flying about, mum and dad just dont know what to do any more. In the end, they do nothing at all. So, from early childhood, the kids are in charge and parents lives are regulated according to the needs of their offspring. When the little dears develop into teenagers, they take complete control. If the young people are going to have a party, for instance, parents are asked to leave the house. Their presence merely spoils the fun. What else can the poor parents do but obey? But remember: children are hardy creatures and most of them survive the harmful influence of extreme permissiveness, so think about it, you poor parents!
