When she was young, she had been in love with two young men, but none of the two relationships could go to a happy ending. A man with great fortune asked her to marry him when she was 27 years old, Jane agreed. However, she regretted after a sleepless night. And the same condition happened when she was 33 years old, and the man is a clergyman. Finally, it was settled by leaving unsettled. These experiences brought up her unique viewpoint of marriage. In the late eighteenth century, with the development of the Industrial Revolution, the English social structure was changed. The capitalists attempted to obtain more political power. For this reason, the conflicts between landlords and capitalists became sharper. In this condition, Jane Austen exerted her transitional role in English literature.Jane Austen gave the novel its modem characteristic through the treatment of daily life. Austen published her four works anonymously and she was widely read in her lifetime. Woolf called Austen “the perfect artist among women. " In the turbulent and transformation society at that time, Pride and Prejudice could be found everywhere and women' destinies were critically influenced by property and social status, which played a crucial role in their selection of marriage.3.2 Jane Austen's view of marriageJane began to be drafted at the age of 19 or 20. Her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, was published in 1811. Her next novel Pride and Prejudice, which she defined as her own darling child received highly favorable reviews in 1813. Mansfield Park was released in 1814, then Emma in 1816, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion in 1818. All of these books are about women' s marriage. Her marriage view reflects in her book.321 The foundation of a happy marriageAusten has a clear location of the relation between marriage and money, she puts forward quite advanced views on marriage: property, social status and love are interconnected. Fortune and social status is not the only element of a happiness marriage. In her view, love is the foundation of a happy marriage, love is playing the leading role in a marriage. At that time, women are passive in the marriage because of their social status lower than men, they have to rely on their husband. They want to improve the quality of life and social status through marriage. But Austin thinks that marriage without love will not be happy. We can see that point at all her works. Her thoughts make women pay attention to their marriage, rather than the benefits after they get marriage. This view was advanced at that time, and now still has profound social significance. If a couple does not consider any substantive issues, such as fortune and social status, etc. they do not stand on the ground. However, if they get married just for the need of a marriage, they are also unwise. A marriage without love is hard for a couple to be happy. Although the author does not deny the importance of economic condition, she emphasizes the crucial role of love.322 The guarantee of a happy marriageIn Pride and Prejudice, her heroines are ultimately married. In the relationship of marriage, people always give priority to marrying young and rich landlords or clergymen. At that time, marriage was the only honorable provision for women to improve her social recognition. So money plays an important role in the marriage. Austen has incisive insight into the aristocratic and bourgeois English society of her time. In Pride and Prejudice, the view of marriage which takes the money or social position as the first choice is criticized. But it does not means that material doesn' t matter in marriage. There is an old saying in China that everything goes wrong for poor couple. In a country, the economic base decides a superstructure. In a similar way, money playing an important role in a family. As we said above, if a couple does not consider any substantive issues, such as fortune and social status, they are unpractical. In the first words of Pride and Prejudice, it shows that a single woman without money will want to marry a rich husband. That is to say, the economic condition is the material foundation of a happy marriage.Chapter4 On Jane Austen's View of Marriage in Pride andPrejudiceElizabeth and Darcy are central figures in the novel. The marriage between them is ups and downs but imprints on their heart. Elizabeth and Darcy give each other such a poor first impression that at the beginning they quarrel a lot. However, because of quarrels they get to know each other and10 get the true love.As we mentioned in chapters, love is the foundation of a happy marriage. After a whole train of events, there was no doubt that they loved each other. And Darcy is a landlord, so they have guarantee of a happy marriage. There are love and material between Elizabeth and Darcy, and they get married. From the point of themselves, what makes them become the perfect couple in the book?4.1 HonestyDarcy and Elizabeth enter into the countryside ball without any good impression of each other. In some sense, an encounter without intention is romantic. Elizabeth' s mother is so worried about her daughters? marriage, so when Bingley and Darcy appear, she persuades her daughters to tempt them. However, as an elegant and self-defended lady, Elizabeth won' t follow her mother' s order. Though she takes part in a series of social events and meets rich nobles, she keeps satisfying decent manner all the time. As to Darcy, though slightly asocial, he “ always tells the absolute truth ” . Although they have lots of misunderstandings and troubles, they express their own ideas honestly. Their love is produced in a transparent way, which is a solid foundation of marriage. In the novel, Elizabeth and Darcy are equal in spirit, and independent in thought, personality and economy as well. In spite their statuses are obviously unequal, they can break the rules of traditions and treat each other equally. The independence and equality which Elizabeth desires for, challenge Darcy a lot. When Darcy' s proud proposal is rejected, he can make a compromise and treat Elizabeth with respect. These determine they will have a happy marriage.114.2 Fate and EffortPride and Prejudice is the bond of love to Darcy and Elizabeth. Darcy' s mindless arrogant comment stimulates Elizabeth' s prejudice. She thinks of Darcy a pride noble, a “ boasted “, “ self-centered “ man with little consideration. During the process of clearing up misunderstandings, Elizabeth gradually finds his “generous natureaccepting him as “the best man I have never known ” . Their love comes naturally as if destiny ties them together. An attempt marriage could never be as happy as theirs.Besides fate, people should make great efforts for their love. Lovers meet and fall in love, which is easy. What makes a happy marriage is their determination to stay together. Darcy introspected himself, changed his attitude to others, played an important role in Jane' s marriage and also work out Lydia' s marriage. All the efforts he do is for Elizabeth.Compared with Elizabeth, the marriage of Jane and Bingley is smoother with a happy ending. Although they fall in love at first sight, they spend a long time making sure the mind of each other. Now we can make a hypothesis that Elizabeth and Darcy fall in love at the dancing party, then it will take a shorter time for them to get married than Jane and Bingley. Both of Jane and Bingley are lack of their own attitude. Mr. Bingley gives up his emotion when Darcy tells him that Jane is not suitable for him. And he finally proposes to Jane under the encouragement of Darcy. Needless to say Jane is always playing a passive role. With Darcy' s help, they realize their love finally. So we can learn that they fall in love by fate, but effort makes them get married.124.3 Self-esteemWomen should have confidence and self-esteem no matter how large the gap of status and poverty between her and her husband is. As for Elizabeth' s condition, it is not exaggerated that Darcy treats her as the prince does to Cinderella. However, Elizabeth feels anything but upset, even when humiliated by Lady Caroline: "He is a gentleman; I am a gentlemans daughter. So far we are the same. " Her decent and confident manner is rooted into her spirit of equality. She will never look down upon herself. With deeper sense, Elizabeth, s behavior reflects Austen? s opinion that men and women should have equal status. One should be treated by his upbringing, instead of fortune and background. Austen' s emphasis on human equality embodies early awareness of humanism.Chapters The significance of modern marriage viewThe age of Austin is far away from us, but the pursuit of a good marriage is the pursuit of every era, whether it is the age of Austin or where we are today. "In 2004, a British agency investigated that in the eyes of modern British women, the dream 'number one date1 is Darcy, the hero of pride and prejudice. In early 2005, BBC4 (BBC) in Britain A survey conducted by Radio 4) among readers once again verified this result: BBC4 launched a campaign in the UK to select literary works that had the greatest impact on women and had changed women's world outlook (mainly on love and marriage). As a result, pride and Prejudice ranked first. n 10 Wu Peng. Pride and prejudice have a great influence on British women J. Oriental Morning 13Post, 2005-01-11,(6). 10The concept of marriage in Pride and Prejudice is not divorced from our real life. The marriage view reflected in Pride and prejudice can be used to guide or warn people to correct their attitude towards love no matter what era. In today's information explosion and vanity skyrocketing society, when people are in love or marriage, how many people are playing a game of love and money? I dare not conclude that how to balance love and money in marriage is also different from each other. With the development of the times, people's life style and communication style are also changing. In such a society, there is no lack of the phenomenon of material desire rising. In such a social background, people should be more clear about whether their pursuit is correct, not only the pursuit of material enjoyment, spiritual possession is priceless. In my opinion, although money plays an important role in marriage, love should not be abandoned because of money. Money can be accumulated slowly, and the two people who love each other can create together, but without love, material satisfaction can not make up for the lack of inner feelings. In today's society, women's human rights have been greatly improved, and women also have the ability to live on their own without being attached to men. In today's society, marriage is no longer the only way for women to survive. Women should pursue independent love and marriage, and never be a vassal of money.Chapter6 ConclusionLove is the perpetual theme of literature arts. There are countless works about love and so many writers are keen on love stories. They lead readers to get into a romantic world.14In Jane Austen' s books, love and marriage are the theme. Among all the works, the most outstanding one is Pride and Prejudice, in which Jane described several different marriages of the middle class. Since marriage is the topic of the book, she has revealed her original marital viewpoint in it. In her ideal, love is the foundation of marriage, while property is the protection of a happy one. Your attitude also plays an important role in the marriage. Jane Austen describes her marital ideal through the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy. Readers can understand Jane Austen much better through the book.Nowadays, the social status of women has been greatly improved. Women could be economically independent, and they choose their marriage freedom. Marriage is no longer the only way to survive. However, marriage continues to be an important goal and problem for most people in the society. Even if we are in different age, her view of marriage is not out of date and can still inspire modern people.15AcknowledgementsGraduation project is coming to an end, which means my school life is coming to an end.
