Read the magazine article and answer the questions below.1. What are the dangers on Mars?To begin with, Mars is extremely cold. Also, its atmosphere is rich in carbon dioxide, so people will not be able to breathe. Still, with no magnetic field, Mars is exposed to much higher levels of radiation.2. Briefly summarize what life on Mars will be like. Include at least three aspects.Since Mars has high levels of radiation, people in Martian cities will probably live underground at first and then above ground. Since it is expensive to send materials to Mars, Martian citizens will have to make good use of the planet's resources and manufacture everything they need. Settlers will probably follow a vegan diet. Also, people there will not travel much because of the radiation. But they may take advantage of Mars9 low gravity an d invent new sports to entertain themselves.82. Is it good or not for human beings to settle on other planets ? Write a short passage to express your opinion.Living beyond the EarthThe United Nations has estimated that by 2050, the world's population will explode from today's seven billion to over nine billion. We do not have a clue what the possible consequences would be. Not surprisingly, quite a number of people are toying with the idea of leaving this planet and seeking a new future in outer space. The most straightforward benefit of populating outer space would be that it increases humanity's chance of survival. By moving a certain portion of the population to other planets, we could relieve the Earth of its burden: overpopulation. Plus, the whole of humanity is stuck on the Earth and history has taught us that it would not be wise to put all our eggs in one basket. Should any planetary disaster happen, for example, an asteroid crashing into our home, it would wipe out the entire human race.Taking the first steps towards a permanent settlement on other planets will also benefit humanity in other ways. The missions to outer space have helped and will continue to help us develop advanced technologies that will no doubt have practical applications back on the Earth. For example, shock absorbers, originally designed to protect astronauts during the extreme conditions of space shuttle launches, are now used in many earthquake-prone areas. In addition, these great projects will bring humankind together. Once we focus on such an ambitious common goal, we can put our differences aside and instead work towards achieving it.It is true that the Earth is the only home human beings have ever known. However remaining a single-planet species would severely limit our chances of long-term survival. To save ourselves from the tragic fate of dinosaurs, we need to seek ways to overcome these challenges, leave the Earth and reach for the stars.教学反思
