Widely regarded as the symbol of ancient Greek culture, the Acropolis is one of the most outstanding and complete ancient architectural complexes that still exist today. The Greek government appointed a committee in 1975 to undertake a complete restoration of the Acropolis and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.The Acropolis is a large flat rock in the centre of Athens, rising up high above the city. Since it is easy to defend, it was used as a fort from the 13th century BCE onwards. In the 5th century BCE, the greatest Greek architects and artists of the time began building temples on the rock. They used marble, a type of very smooth, strong stone. However, marble does not last forever. The stone can be worn down by natural forces, and human activities are also a main cause of damage. Firstly, since it served as a fort, the Acropolis suffered damage in countless wars. Secondly, millions of travellers who visit each year have also harmed the buildings, simply because so many people walk through them. Finally, Athens has some of the most polluted air in the world, and acid rain is gradually wearing down the marble of the Acropolis. The Acropolis is a gift to future generations. It has stood the test of time and will continue to serve as a reminder of the rich history of Greece.教学反思
