In a digital world, where sending a text or email is far more convenient than using snail mail, is the writing on the wall for traditional pen and paper? Well, some people claim that writing still has many benefits, so maybe it's not time to ditch your ballpoint or fountain pen yet. These days, when people request things in writing, a typed, electronic document will be accepted. Doing this on a computer means it could be saved, edited, copied and sent via email. But crafting a handwritten document is unique: it requires planning and thought, and, as well as practising your handwriting, it helps you to remember spelling and punctuation. Some experts believe your brain benefits from using old-fashioned pen and paper. This is particularly relevant for students, where typing notes into a laptop is thought to lack the "tactile feedback (触觉反馈)"to the brain that contact between pen and paper does. BBC Worklife website quotes Hetty Roessingh from the University of Calgary, who says that taking notes by hand involves cognitive engagement in summarising, paraphrasing, organising, concept and vocabulary mapping. Others agree that handwriting may boost fine motor skills in your hands and fingers. There are everyday benefits of using pen and paper too. Scribbling (匆忙书写)notes, shopping lists or messages on the back of an envelope can still be useful, quick and portable. But putting pen to paper in a letter to a friend or loved one can probably have the most impact. Pen pal writer Katherine Moller told the BBC, "In a world where it is so easy to hop online to email or to send a fast text, it is so personal and so precious to know someone chose to turn off the virtual world to spend some time with you.”So, while digital skills remain important, don't write off your pens and pencils yet -especially if your smartphone, tablet or laptop runs out of power.24. But the fireworks could finally lose their appeal with the growing use of drones (无人机)for light shows. One obvious example was drone light show in the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics.Ollie Howitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drones to create a display for London's new year celebration, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drones were increasingly able to fly in greater density and for longer. Howitt also said there were benefits of drones, "They give out no pollutants, they're reusable, and there9s no fallout or that kind of thing. So in that sense they are a very sensible choice.”Robert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbor, also said the decision to use a drone display at the harbor was down to a number of factors, including the impact of fireworks on animals from wildlife to the pets of boat owners. "They've often commented on how much suffering is caused to their pets by the fireworks/9 he said. But not everyone agrees. Hans Rosling, a spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. "Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (锂)batteries which are known not to be all that 'green'J he said. “The impact of firework use on the environment has been shown to be minor and very short-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely to be more pollution from a couple of cars driving to an event than caused by fireworks at an event. ”And there are issues with drone light displays, which need to receive specific safety approval from certain authorities. Some suggest the use of drones doesn't mean shutting off fireworks. The bangs of fireworks create a sound feeling that is hard to replace. Meanwhile, others prefer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of image.27. Why does the writer talk about the Tokyo Olympics in Para 1?A. To attract readers9 attention to the Olympics.B. To advocate setting off fireworks in the new year.C. To introduce the popular use of drones for light shows.D. Firework displays last shorter than drone displays.B. The pollution from fireworks isn't as much as people think.C. Drones have less impact on the environment than fireworks.D. People should abandon the drone displays because of lithium batteries.30. What are people's attitudes towards drone light displays?A. Controversial. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. This is a page turner with complex characters and situations that will make you think hard about friendship, good and evil, betrayal, etc. It is intense and a great book by many measures. On one level, The Kite Runner is the story of two boys in Afghanistan and Afghan immigrants in America. It is a story set in a culture that has become of increasing interest to Americans since the September 11, 2001 attacks. It also explores the history of the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. On this level, it provides a good way for people to learn more about Afghan history and culture in the context of the story.Looking at The Kite Runner as a story about culture, however, misses what the book is really about. This is a novel about humanity. This is a story about friendship, loyalty, cruelty, longing for acceptance, redemption (救赎), and survival. The core story could be set in any culture because it deals with issues that are universal. The Kite Runner looks at how the main character, Amir, deals with a secret in his past and how that secret shaped who he became. It tells of Amir's childhood friendship with Hassan, his relationship with his father and growing up in a privileged place in society. I was drawn in by Amir's voice. I sympathized with him, cheered for him and felt angry with him at different points. Similarly, I became attracted by Hassan and his father. The characters became real to me, and it was difficult for me to put the book down and leave their world.I highly recommend this book, especially for book clubs. For those of you who are not in a reading group, read it and then loan it to a friend. You are going to want to talk about it when you finish.21. The underlined words "a page turner" probably mean that the book isabstractA. difficultridiculousB. exciting. The greatest charm of The Kite Runner lies inA. the beauty of languagethe history of the TalibanB. the culture of immigrantsthe reflection of humanity22 . According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. The story is set in the September 11, 2001 attacks in America.B. The author always feels sympathy for the main character, Amir.C. The story can provide inspiration for readers of various cultures.D. The secret helped Amir to grow up in a privileged place in society.23 . What type of writing is the passage?A. A review of a book.B. An introduction to a book.C. A summary of a book.D. An advertisement of a book.BAristotle believed the face was a window onto a person's mind. Today, facial expressions are still commonly thought to be a universally valid way to judge other people's feelings. A smile suggests happiness. A frown indicates sadness. However, an analysis of hundreds of research papers has uncovered a surprising conclusion: there is no good scientific evidence to suggest that there are such things as recognisable facial expressions for basic emotions which are universal across cultures.Lisa Feldman Barrett, a psychologist at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and her colleagues found that, on average, adults in urban cultures scowled when they were angry 30% of the time. This meant that some 70% of the time they did not scowl when angr y. A scowl, the researchers concluded, seemed valid for all six of the emotional categories: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise. All raise questions about the efforts of information-technology companies to develop artificial intelligence algorithms (计算程序) which can recognise facial expressions and work out a person's emotional state. Aleix Martinez, a computer engineer at Ohio State University, said that companies attempting to extract emotions from images of faces have failed to understand the importance of context.Dr Martinez cited an experiment in which participants were shown a close-up picture of a man's face, which was bright red with his mouth open in a scream. Based on this alone, most participants said the man was extremely angry. Then the view zoomed out to show a football player with his arms outstretched, celebrating a goal. His angry-looking face was, in fact, a show of pure joy.Given that people cannot guess each other's emotional states most of the time, Dr Martinez sees no reason computers would be able to. "There are companies right now claiming to be able to do that and apply this to places I find really scary and dangerous, for example, in hiring people/9 he says.” Some companies require you to submit a video CV, and then this is analysed by a machine-learning system. And depending on your facial expressions, they hire you or not, which I find really shocking and not only based on the wrong hypothesis (假设),but a dangerous hypothesis.24 .The main purpose of the passage is topresent the mistake associated with artificial intelligenceA. report the problem caused by misreading facial expressionsdescribe the relationship between facial expressions and emotionsB. introduce a danger experienced by information-technology companies.Dr.Martinez cited the experiment in order to_A. reveal the mystery of the pictureemphasi
