Mother continually warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the Y.M.C.A. pool was safe.I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, zzHi, Skinny! How'd you like to be ducked?" With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I I and edit a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly. When I came to consciousness, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by. It deprived me of joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return. This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. As I looked at his back, I wondered: Is he running for help, or is he running away and leaving me to slip to the bottom?I was surprised to see him bend and pick large, fallen oak limb. It was black and V-shaped. He ran with it toward pond. At the edge, he flopped to his stomach, pushed the limb before him, a wriggled toward me. When a slender top branch was within reach, I grabbed of it. It did not break.Hand over hand, I pulled myself from the hole. I began to stand. I wanted to run from the ponds as fast as I could run .Harry yelled, “Get down! Stay flat on the ice or it will break again/' I obeyed. Harry wriggled backward to ward shore, towing the limb. I hung on to a branch and wriggle toward shore on my stomach.Off the pond, we ran toward the house. My overshoes squished and squirted water. My clothes dripped. Near the house Harry said, ''I'm making myself scarce.I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, fell through the ice." Mother rushed over, un-buttoned my coat, and stripped my clothes from me. She filled a tub with hot water. The bath stopped my teeth-chattering chill, and I was able to tell her all that had happened. After the bath, I was given a cup of hot milk to drink and was sent to bed. "I don'twant you to get pneumonia/, said Mother.I heard Mother call Harry. I heard him come into kitchen. I heard loud voices. He was being lectured about getting a younger sibling into trouble. He was sent to bed as punishment.I do not think it changed him, because when summer came he wanted me to parachute from the loft of the big red barn to a small scattering of hay on the ground. He handed me a gunnysack to use as a parachute.“You go first/' he said. zzTry it, Sis, it will be fun.”But I had changed. I said no, and so got through the rest of my childhood safe of life and limb.(原文来自英语沙龙杂志)【2】Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, A fight! Let's go and see!”“No, "said Henry. "Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手)this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."“You are a coward, and afraid to go, "said Robert, and off he ran. Henry want straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual. But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him together.Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys'laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.Robert was fast sinking. Thus, Robert's life was saved.参考范文Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the scrnrms, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time. By great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the shore. Thus, Robert/s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily.
