BWe like to think that the reasons for seeking wealth are common. Humans, by nature, like to be comfortable, like to have power and like to have the choices and freedom offered by lots of money. Yet in fact, people's understanding in the meaning of wealth is different around the world. The new Barclay's Wealth Insights study finds that the rich of emerging (新兴的) markets view wealth very differently from Europeans with quite a long rich history and Americans with a slightly shorter rich history. The study surveyed 2,000 people from 120 countries with investible assets (可投资资产) of $1.5 million or more. They shared some common views: a large majority of rich people from all over the world agreed that wealth enabled them to buy the best products and that wealth gave them more freedom of choice in their lives. Most also agreed that wealth was a reward for hard work. But the differences are more interesting.Respect Asians and Latin Americans were more likely (49% and 47% ) to say that wealth allowed them to get respect from friends and family. Only 28% of Europeans and 38% of Americans said respect was a byproduct (副产品) of wealth. Happiness About two thirds of Europeans and Americans said wealth made them happy. But it had a greater happiness influence in emerging markets, with 76% of Asians and Latin Americans saying wealth made them happy. Role models Less than half of Americans and Europeans said the wealthy set an important example to others to be successful, compared with 71% of Latin Americans and 61% of Asians. Spending Wealthy Europeans were more likely to spend their money on travel and home decoration. Latin Americans seemed to put the highest spending on education, while Americans' spending in charity (慈善) was much more than the rich in any other area of the world. 25. According to the passage, which continents belong to the emerging markets? A. Europe and America. B. Europe and South America. C. Asia and Latin America. D. Asia and America. 26. People generally hold the opinion that humans seek wealth to _.A. gain respect from others B. enjoy power and free choices offered by wealth C. wish for happiness D. show off and gain rights 27. Which of the following might the writer not agree with? A. Most rich people in the survey agreed wealth was a reward for their hard work B. Wealth had a greater happiness influence on the rich in Asia and Latin America.C. Wealthy Latin Americans were more likely to spend money on travel and home decoration. D. Nearly half of the rich in emerging markets regarded respect as a byproduct of wealth. 28. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Happiness lies in wealth.B. Wealth brings happiness, respect and admiration. C. People seek wealth to enjoy life.D. Wealth is translated differently around the world. American researchers have watched ants build life-saving rafts to keep afloat (飘浮的) during floods. They also have recorded how ants choose their next queen the female whose job is to produce eggs. New technology is helping to improve researchers understanding of the insects. But there is still a lot to be learned. Fire ants living in Brazilian forests are perfectly at home in an environment where flooding is common. To save themselves, the insects connect their legs together and create floating rafts. Some ant rafts can be up to 20 centimeters wide. David Hu is an engineer with the Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, saying, "If you have 100 ants, which means 600 legs, 99 percent of those legs will be connected to a neighbor. So they're very, very good at keeping this network. " David Hu and other Georgia Tech researchers wanted to study ants and the secret of their engineering. They froze ant rafts and then looked at them with the help of computed technology, or CT images. The pictures showed that larger ants serve in central positions to which smaller ants hold. The larger ants create pockets of air that keep the insects afloat Scientists say small robots or materials that can change shape could be programmed in a similar way, working towards a shared goal. Researchers at North Carolina State University are also studying ants. They examined how Indian jumping ants choose the leader of the colony when they lose their top female or queen. 32. The author takes fire ants as an example to tell us _ .A. how ants seek food B. how ants surviveC. how ants communicate D. how ants live together 33. What can we know from what David Hu said? A. Ants know the way to join together closely. B. Ants know the way to keep safe in the river. C. Ants know the way to look for each other. D. Ants know the way to build a large raft. 34. Why did the larger ants serve in central positions in their ant rafts? A. To stress their importance. B. To protect themselves. C. To fight against their enemies.D. To defend the queen35. What ideas do the ants give us according to the passage? A. We can use similar-shaped machines in flooding areas. B. We can combine small robots or materials into larger ones.C. Small and shape-changeable things might work just like ants do.D. Small robots or materials in the shape of ants can be made. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Nearly everyone has spent at least one night lying in bed wishing for sleep.
