But soon he became interested in the civil rights movement. At present he has a plan which he hopes will take him to Congress as a southern representative. Now in his first year at Harvard Law School, Reg is making careful plans. After earning his degree, he expects to return to the South to practice law among the poor. "I want to help them understand what their rights are and to help them achieve them," he says. Then he hopes to run for political office at the local and state level until he is ready to try for Congress.Reg grew up in a low-income Negro section of Birmingham, Alabama. Brought up by his grandparents after his parents were divorced while he was very young, Reg has been living through a period of far-reaching progress in race relations. In the summer of 1968 Reg himself became a good example of this progress when he became the first Negro student appointed to a special new program. The program introduces bright young students to the workings of the Georgia State government and encourages them to seek employment there after finishing their education. "I've been lucky/' he says, "I seem to have been in the right place at the right time."But luck is only part of Reg's story, for he has made the most of opportunities that came his way. He learned to read in kindergarten and began visiting the public library regularly to borrow books. His grandparents encouraged him, though neither of them had much education, and they bought him a set of encyclopedias. "I loved those books," he re- members. "I used to come downstairs before breakfast and read short articles. I enjoyed reading about famous men, and then I would pretend to be one of them. I guess it was partly a childish game and partly an escape. It wasn't too much fun to be a Negro when I was a kid."While studying for his bachelor's degree at Morehouse College, Reg worked on several political campaigns helping candidates get elected to government offices. At the same time he maintained a "B" average while majoring in political science. He worked as a student advisor to earn extra money for his college expenses, and he was granted a scholarship for a year of study at the University of Valencia in Spain. With just two more years to complete at Harvard Law School, which also gave him a scholarship, Reg has made a good start on his professional career. He says, "The good life for me is the kind of life where I can find satisfaction in public service."1) .According to the passage, Lindsay's purpose in life was toA、become a famous lawyerB、be elected to political office at the local levelC、get another scholarship to study abroadD、serve the public2) .When Mr. Lindsay received a scholarship to Morehouse College, he wanted toA、become a southern representative in CongressB、participate in the civil rights movementC、get a good job with good payD、help candidates get elected to government office3) .We learn from the passage that LindsayA、spent his childhood with his grandparentsB、loved to read history booksC、had well-educated grandparentsD、learned to read after his parents divorced4) .Lindsay felt thatA、reading about famous men would help him to succeed pretending to be a famous person was a way to escape from the realities of lifeC、reading in the public library was a good way to educate himselfD、reading widely would provide him with many opportunities in the future5) .In Lindsay's time,.A、there was a great improvement in race relationsB、black people were still looked down uponC、the Georgia State government encouraged black students to work for itD>it was impossible for blacks to enter famous universities2.A few years ago it was fashionable to speak of a generation gap, a division between young people and their elders. Parents complained that children did not show them proper respect and obedience, while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many critics argue that it is built into the fabric of our society. One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their won life-styles. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and approve of and often to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their educations, move out of the family home at an early age, marry-or live with-people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents. In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for their children are another cause of the division between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become obsolete overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedoms and opportunities of our society, and in the rapid pace at which society changes.1) .Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the reading passage?A.Parents should be more tolerable towards their children.B、The younger generation should value the older generation for their wisdom.C、The generation gap is partly created by the older generation.D、The generation gap should be avoidable in American society.2) .The main idea of the first paragraph is that.A、the generation gap suddenly appeared the generation gap is a feature of American lifec>how people can reduce the generation gapD、many critics argue over the nature of the generation gap3) .The word "around" in paragraph 1 means.A、on all sidesB、in every directionC、nearD、in existence4) .Which one is NOT the cause of the generation gap?A、Young people like to choose their own life-styles.B、American society is changing very fast.C、Parents place high hopes on their children.D、Modern education makes them think differently.5) .In American society, young people often.A、rely on their parents to make a lifeB、stay with their parents in order to get an opportunity for higher educationC、seek the best advice from their parentsD、have very little in common with their parents3.It is the business of the scientist to accumulate knowledge about the universe and all that is in it, and to find, if he is able, common factors which explain the facts that he knows. He chooses, when he can, the method of the "controlled experiment". If he wants to find out the effect of light on growing plants, he takes many plants, as alike as possible. Some he stands in the sun, some in the shade, some in the dark; all the time keeping all other conditions (temperature, moisture, nourishment) the same. In this way, by keeping other conditions constant, and by varying the light only, the effect of light on the plants can be clearly seen. This method can be applied to a variety of situations. In the course of his inquiries the scientist may find what he thinks is one common explanation for an increasing number of facts. The explanation, if it seems consistently to fit various facts, is called a hypothesis. If a hypothesis continues to stand the test of numerous experiments and remains unshaken, it becomes a law.1) .According to the passage, a hypothesis is.A、an explanation for a large number of facts likely to be accepted as a trutha factor which explains the facts already known to the scientistC、an explanation that stands the test of numerous experimentsD、a common explanation that will definitely become a law2) .In order to investigate the effect of light on growing plants the scientist.A、has to stand in the sunB、can keep the same plants under different conditions of lightC>takes as many plants as possibleD、both b and c3) .The word "constant" in the first paragraph means.A、continualB、 faithfulC、 variousD、unchanging4) .What should be kept the same in a "controlled experiment"?A、All the factors.B、The common factors.C、The factor under investigation.D、All factors except the one being investigated.4.Rather than be burned to death in his blazing shell-torn Lancaster on a bombing raid over Germany in 1944, Royal Air Force Gunnery Sergeant Nicholas Alkemade jumped from 18, 000 feet without a parachute ( 降落伞 ),calculating that this would be a quicker and less painful death.Unbelievably, he suffered only slight injuries. The last part of his 122-mile-per-hour fall was broken by the branches of young pine trees, thick springy undergrowth, and finally deep snow. "It was rather like bouncing on a trampoline," he recalled.Sergeant Alkemade's experience is a dramatic rebuttal of the idea that people falling from great heights are dead before they hit the ground. Asphyxia, brought about by the speed of the fall, and heart failure through shock were thought to occur long before the final impact. The fallacy of this belief has been amply (充分地)demonstrated by free-fall parachutists who regularly drop several miles before opening their parachutes. In 1960 Capt. Joseph Kittinger jumped from a balloon in the United States and fell 16 miles before opening his parachute.
