When we want to do something (some times many things) perfectly, but it is beyond our abilities or out of our control, anxieties create. This brings great stress on us. Also, stress comes from our less capable of organizing things we need to do. We attach the same importance to trifles and significant things. And lastly, when we lead an unbalanced life, when we commit our life only in one thing, say, our job, we have no other outlets to discharge our energy and emotion, stressed people we became.2 .Questions on the topics and the passages1) What are the harmful effects of stress? How does the writer presents the harms ? According to Eliot, stressed people face high blood pressure, higher cholesterol levels, crazy heart rhythms and possibly death. The shocking effect of stress is death, but the writer dose not jump to the conclusion abruptly. Instead, the writer presents a progressive process of a series of causes and effects. In these cause and effect relations, the first effect is the second cause, the second effect is the third cause, and so on. This process makes the argument more convincing and more logical.2) What causes stress according to the writer ?The writer thinks that, for many people, the root of stress is anger which comes from two aspects. Firstly, one source of stress (anger) comes from seeking perfection, a terrible cycle that ends in perfectionists blowing their tops. Secondly, stress comes from that some people have little understanding of what is important in life. They give the same emphasis to a traffic jam that they give a family argument.3) According to Eliot, how to deal with the problem of stress ?Learn to be less hostile by changing some of your attitudes and negative thinking.(pl2)Take charge of life , and control is the way out of being stressed.(pl3) ©Understand what parts of life are controllable and find out what needs to be done in order to gain control.(pl4)list twelve things first and then cut the list down to six, only keeping things that will affect identity, control and self worth.(pl6)decide to do only the most important things.(pl7), but these priorities should be charged over time.4) What are the NICE factors ? Why are the Y important ?NICE factors are new, interesting, challenging experiences, compared to FUD factors-fear, uncertainty and doubt; NICE factors can make our life controllable instead of stressful.5) What dose the example of Ben Franklin show ?Ben Franklin's example shows us that there are many things in life, but some are important, fewer are the most important we have to do or achieve. What we should do is to set our priorities and change the priorities properly with the passage of time. Anyway, only a few things can affect our identity, control and self-worth in mixed life.II Background informationl.Dr.Robert S. Eliot is a cardiologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is the founder and chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Nebraska. His best sellers include Is It Worth Dying For?, How to Make Stress Work for You 一Not Against You and How to Lighten Y our Load and Save Your Life. You can read a short discussion on his book at http:www.watchtower.crg/library/g998/3/22/articl 01 .Om.2.The University of Nebraska was founded on February 15,1869, less than two years after Nebraska became the 37lh state of the United States. The original goal of this university was, “To afford the inhabitants of this state with the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the various branches of literature, science, and the arts.59The University of Nebraska is the state's only public university. It became the first institution west of the Mississippi River to offer graduate education in 1903 and joined the prestigious Association of American Universities in 1909.The University was reorganized under a 1968 act of the Nebraska Legislature. The legislation provided for the addition of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (formerly the municipal University of Omaha) and designated the University of Nebraska-Linclin and the University of Nebraska Medical Center as separate campuses. In 1991, the University of Nebraska at Kearney (formerly Kearney State College) became a campus of the university. The university also includes many research, extension, and service facilities statewide. To learn more about the university, visit http:www.nebraska.edu.III. Text Structure AnalysisThe passage, presenting the views of Dr. Robert S. Eliot, gives advice on how to lighten one's load and improve one's life. First, we learn the harms of stress. Then we learn how to deal with it. The passage can be divided into five parts.Part One (Para. 1 -2):Presenting the topic of the essay: If you often feel the stress in your life is spinning out of control, you need to learn to take charge of your life where you can一and recognize there are many things beyond your control.Part Two (Para.3-5): Mainly about the harmful effects of stress. In Para.3, the writer introduces Dr. Robert S. Eliot, a clinical professor of medicine who wrote about From Stress to Strength: How to Lighten Your Load and Save Your Life. This gives us a hint that the writer might tell us about Dr. Eliot's opinions concerning stress.Para. 4 and 5 tell us the harmful results of stress: high blood pressure, higher cholesterol levels, crazy heart rhythms, and possibly death.Part Three (Para.6-11) Mainly about the causes of stress. Para. 6 tells us stress was once nearly killing Eliot, but he's doing very well now. In para.7, Eliot analyzes the main predictors of stress一一fear, uncertainty, and doubt-together with perceived lack of control. In para.8, Eliot claims the root of some people's stress is anger. In para.9, Eliot says one source of stress comes from seeking perfection, a terrible cycle that ends in perfectionists blowing their tops. In para. 10, Eliot says others are angry, because they have no compass in life. That they give the same emphasis to a traffic jam that they give to a family argument is an example that they have little understanding of what is important in life. Para. 11 concludes this part by saying that stress can actually make you hot-tempered and blow apart due to a heart problem.Part Four (Para. 12-18): This part presents us with some suggestions from Eliot as how to deal with stress. In Paragraph 12, Eliot advises us that one should learn to be less hostile by changing some attitudes and negative thinking. Starting from Paragraph 13, Eliot recommends taking charge of life. Control is the way out of being stressed. In Paragraph 14, Eliot recommends that people should understand what parts of life are controllable. One should also find out what needs to be done in order to gain control, Paragraph 14 to Paragraph 17 go into detail concerning how to set priorities. In Paragraph 14, Eliot gives us an example of something Ben Franklin wrote down what he wanted to do-be a better father, a better husband, financially independent, stimulated intellectually, and remain even-tempered. In Paragraph 16, Eliot suggests that a person can first list twelve things and then cut the list down to six, only keeping things that will affect identity, control, and self-worth. In Paragraph 16, Eliot continues to advise us that since time is limited, a person must decide to do only the most important things. But Paragraph 18 warns that these priorities are likely to change as they are.Part Five (Para. 19-20): This is the remainder of the passage. In this part, the writer presents Eliot's opinion that some things, such as the economy and politicians, cannot be controlled. We must therefore learn to accept these things.IV. Structured WritingA Paragraph of Cause and effectIn Passage A the writer deals with the harmful effects of stress. In Paragraph 5,we find the shocking effect of stress is death. The writer does not jump to the conclusion abruptly .Instead, the writer presents a progressive process of a series of causes and effects, which makes the argument more convincing .Now have a look at Paragraph 5 again and the analytical chart based on it.In para.5, Eliot says researchers have found that stressed people have higher cholesterol levels, among other things. "We've done years of work in showing that excess alarm or stress chemicals can literally burst heart muscle fibers. When that happens it happens very quickly, within five minutes. It creates many short circuits, and that causes crazy heart rhythms. The heart beats like a bag of worms instead of a pump. And when that happens, we can't live.”Cause and Effect OneCause: having stressEffect: Stressed people have higher cholesterol levels, among other things.Cause and Effect TwoCause: excess alarm or stress chemicalsEffect: They can literally burst heart muscle fibers.Cause and Effect ThreeCause: heart muscle fibers harmedEffect: It creates many short circuits, and that causes crazy heart rhythms.Cause and Effect FourCause: suffering from crazy heart rhythmsEffect: You can't live.V.
