It was also originally a fairy tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.Love Actually (2003)While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I suggest watching a translated version or enabling subtitles in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.Home Alone (1990)This amusing masterwork is one of my favorite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While the families are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy beat two grown men.Miracle on 34th Street (1994)You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The story-line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age. 21. What is Home Alone mainly about?A. An unsuccessful family vacation.B. A terrible suffering to a little boy.C. A boy protecting home by himself.D. A 1 O-year-old boy's practical jokes.22. Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?A. Owing to its moving plots.B. Because of its funny story.C. Due to its childish storyline.D. For its famous actors and actresses.23. Where can we most probably read the passage?A. In a personal diary.B. In a film magazine.C. In a science report.D. In government information booklet.BHow many times have we expressed how rude young people are for texting while having a conversation? They try to fix eyes on their smart phone screen while nodding. What goes through your mind is "how rude they are!"Have we forgotten some of the old school manners that our parents, grandparents and teachers taught usmanners that have nothing to do with a mobile device or iPad, but everything to do with long-forgotten Golden Rules we were raised with? When I was growing up, there was etiquette to coughing. When coughing, we were told to turn our head away and block off our mouth. This might sound amusing to many young people. But if we didn't follow these etiquettes, we would get a quick reminder to the back of our head. When we were given something and forgot to say “thank you" , elders would seriously remind us, “Aren't you forgetting to say something" , which was immediately followed by a "thank youz,.Maybe technology is a factor that has affected our brains so much that we can never go back to those golden days we like. It seems as if we have thrown out manners and etiquette with the bathwater. Simple etiquette is missing in society. Thank-you notes for gifts you have received all fall into the same box of manners. To me, people are cold these days mostly due to the fact that we are on the run every day in the world. In the work environment have you ever come across a sign “Your mother doesn't work here, clean up by yourself" ? We often hear people say, the younger generation have no manners. I think many people have lost their manners. We've allowed bad manners to go unchecked. We simply stand bad behavior. In a world of more good manners, more "thank you" or "please“ exchanged, our younger generation will have an improved quality of life.24. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A. To stress the importance of cell phone.B. To introduce the main topics of the text.C. To point out young people's good manners.D. To explain the effect of cell phones on people.25. In the passage, the underlined phrase in the second paragraph refers to .A. modern family mannersB. rules observed at schoolC. rules everyone has to followD. etiquette started by older generationAccording to the author, young people have no manners mainly because of.A. the busy lifestyles people haveB. the fast developed technologyC. the people's attitude towards running awayD. the parents and teachers5 improper act and attitudeCNot so long ago, most people didn't know who Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was going to become. She was just an average high school athlete. There was every indication that she was just another Jamaican teenager without much of a future. However, one person wanted to change this. Stephen Francis observed then eighteen-year-old Shelly-Ann at a track meet and was convinced that he had seen the beginnings of true greatness. Her times were not exactly impressive, but even so, he sensed there was something trying to get out, something the other coaches had overlooked when they had assessed her and found her lacking. He decided to offer Shelly-Ann a place in his very strict training sessions. Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few years later at Jamaica's Olympic trials in early 2021, Shelly-Ann, who at that time only ranked number 70 in the world, beat Jamaica's unchallenged queen of the sprint (短跑).“Where did she come from?z, asked an astonished sprinting world, before concluding that she must be one of those one-hit wonders that spring up from time to time, only to disappear again without signs. But Shelly-Ann was to prove that she was anything but a one-hit wonder. At the Beijing Olympics she swept away any doubts about her ability to perform consistently by becoming the first Jamaican woman ever to win the 100 meters Olympic gold. She did it again one year at the World Championships in Berlin, becoming world champion with a time of 10.73the fourth fastest time ever.Shelly-Ann is a little woman with a big smile. She has a mental toughness that did not come about by chance. Her journey to becoming the fastest woman on earth has been anything but smooth and effortless. She grew up in one of Jamaica's toughest inner-city communities known as Waterhouse, where she lived in a one-room apartment, sleeping four in a bed with her mother and two brothers. Waterhouse, one of the poorest communities in Jamaica, is a really violent and oveipopulated place. Several of Shelly-Ann's friends and family were caught up in the killings; one of her cousins was shot dead only a few streets away from where she lived. Sometimes her family didn't have enough to eat. She ran at the school championships barefooted because she couldn't afford shoes. Her mother Maxime, one of a family of fourteen, had been an athlete herself as a young girl but, like so many other girls in Waterhouse, had to stop after she had her first baby. Maxime's early entry into the adult world with its responsibilities gave her the determination to ensure that her kids would not end up in Waterhouse's roundabout of poverty. One of the first things Maxime used to do with Shelly-Ann was taking her to the track, and she was ready to sacrifice everything. It didn't take long fbr Shelly-Ann to realize that sports could be her way out of Waterhouse. On a summer evening in Beijing in 2021, all those long, hard hours of work and commitment finally bore fruit. The barefoot kid who just a few years previously had been living in poverty, surrounded by criminals and violence, had written a new chapter in the history of sports. But Shelly-Ann's victory was far greater than that. The night she won Olympic gold in Beijing, the routine murders in Waterhouse and the drug wars in the neighboring streets stopped. The dark cloud above one of the world's toughest criminal neighborhoods simply disappeared fbr a few days, "I have so much fire burning for my country,“ Shelly-Ann said. She plans to start a foundation for homeless children and wants to build a community centre in Waterhouse. She hopes to inspire the Jamaicans to lay down their weapons. She intends to fight to make it a woman's as well as a man's world. As Muhammad Ali puts it, "Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them. A desire, a dream, a vision/' One of the things Shelly-Ann can be proud of is her understanding of this truth.26. What made Maxime decide to train her daughter on the track?A. Her success and lessons in her career.B. Her interest in Shelly-Ann's quick profit.C. Her wish to get Shelly-Ann out of poverty.D. Her early entrance into the sprinting world.27. What can we infer from Shelly-Ann5s statement underlined in Paragraph 5?A. She was highly rewarded for her efforts.B. She was eager to do more for her country.C. She became an athletic star in her country.D. She was the envy of the whole community.28. By mentioning Muhammad Ali's words, the author intends to tell us thatA. players should be highly inspired by coachesB. great athletes need to concentrate o
