读后续写ANoteoftheNicestThingsA Note of the Nicest ThingsHe was in the first third grade class I taught at Saint Marys school. All of my students were dear to me,except Mark Eklund. He often talked constantly.I had to remind him again and again that talking without permission was not acceptable. One morning my patience was growing thin, and then I made a new teachers mistake.I looked at him, saying,“If you say one more word,I am going to tape your mouth shut!”It wasnt ten seconds later when Chuck, another student, blurted out,“Mark is talking again.”Since I had stated the punishment,I had to act on it.I took a roll of tape out of my drawer.Without saying a word,I proceeded to Marks desk, tore off two pieces of tape and made a big X over his mouth. When I walked back to Marks desk and removed the tape, his first words were,“Thank you for correcting me,Sister.”A Note of the Nicest Things One Friday,I asked the students to list the names of the other students, leaving a space between each name. Then I told them to write down the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates. As they left, each one handed me the paper. That Saturday,I wrote down the name of each student and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday I gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling.“Really?”I heard the whispers.“I never knew that meant anything to anyone!”“I didnt know others liked me so much!”Then Mark said,“Thank you for teaching me,Sister.”Years later, after I returned from vacation,my parents met me at the airport. My father cleared his throat as he usually did before saying something important.“The Eklunds called last night,”he began.“Really?”I said.“I havent heard from them in years.I wonder how Mark is.”Dad responded quietly.“Mark was killed in Vietnam,”he said.“The funeral is tomorrow, and his parents would like it if you could attend.”I had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before,so handsome,so mature.Readingforstructure01Readingforinformation02Cluestowriting03Continuationwriting04CONTENT1ReadingforstructurePART ONEA Note of the Nicest Thingsfalling actionclimaxrising a new teachers mistake. What did Mark do?I looked at him, saying,“If you say one more word,I am going to tape your mouth shut!”It wasnt ten seconds later when Chuck, another student, blurted out,“Mark is talking again.”What did I do?Since I had stated the punishment,I had to act on it.I took a roll of tape out of my drawer.Without saying a word,I proceeded to Marks desk, tore off two pieces of tape and made a big X over his mouth. What was his reaction? When I walked back to Marks desk and removed the tape, his first words were,“Thank you for correcting me,Sister.”A Note of the Nicest ThingsRegardless of/Turning a deaf ear to/Ignoing my warning,Mark still offended the rule and talked in my class. His misbehavior was reported by a classmate. So,in order to maintain my authority,I implemented the punishment of taping his mouth shut, for which Mark thanked me.A Note of the Nicest ThingsUse your own words to retell this incident A Note of the Nicest ThingsI made a new teachers mistake. Vietnam, military Note of the Nicest ThingsAfter the funeral,Marks mother and father found me.“We want to show you something,”his father said.“They found this on Mark.We thought you might recognize it.”Opening a billfold,he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times.I knew that the pieces of paper were the ones on which I had listed all the nicest things that Marks classmates had said about him.“Thank you so much for doing that.”Marks mother said.“As you can see,Mark behaved better and better at school. Its all because of you and your list.A Note of the Nicest ThingsMarks classmates started to gather around us.Charlie smiled,“I still keep the list in the top drawer of my desk at home.”Chucks wife said,“He asked me to put this in our wedding album.”Then Vicki, another student, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn list to the group.“I carry this with me at all times,”Vicki said.“I think we all saved our lists.”Thats when I finally sat down and cried.Sometimes the smallest things could mean the most to others.Compliment the people we love and care about, before it is too
