Unit 5 The Value of Money B卷 能力提升--高一英语人教版(2019)必修第三册单元测试AB卷.docx

A You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then it's likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel a sense of achievement, so you are always searching for ways to fill the feeling of emptiness in your life. The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving so as to achieve real happiness is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call “being” and “having” values. Your “being” values arc the character traits(特征) of the ideal person you would like to be. An example of some "being" values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by “being” a positive role model. Mastering these “being” character traits becomes your life purpose. Your “having” values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, being valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life. When you make a commitment to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary(保守的)ones. If your usual habit is to complain about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思),or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be this is the key to personal power. When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you reinforce(增强) your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.1.According to the text, by acting on your own “being” values, you will _.A.gain a lot of powerB.fill your own needsC.seek all human virtuesD.form positive personality2.Which of the following does NOT belong to your “having” values?A.Your success in the competition.B.The support from your friends.C.Your own peaceful mind.D.The friendship with others.3.What can be inferred from the text?A.“Having” values are better than“being” values.B.The way other people think of you decides who you are.C.A calm person does not choose to complain easily.D.A responsible person does not care about financial security.B   Mark Twain left school when he was twelve. He had little school education. In spite of this, he became the most famous writer of his time. He made millions of dollars by writing. Twain grew up there and was fascinated with life along the river the steamboats, the giant lumber(木头) rafts, and the people who worked on them.    The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is one of Twain's best loved short stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days, which originated in the late 1950s and became national in the 1960s. Children enter their frogs in the jumping contest during National Tom Sawyer Days. Theres also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this contest comes from a scene in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he makes them believe that its fun to paint, and they join in the “fun”. There were no signs of Christmas or holiday cheer in the house. "They weren't smiling. It seemed like they weren't happy at all. They were missing something," Officer Paramore said. "The mother mentioned that they weren't going to have a Christmas that year. It was pretty obvious that the family was struggling," he said. "So we told each other that something had to be done."    Paramore and his partner, Barry Ward, left the house with a plan. The next day, they went to a supermarket and bought a tree, lights and some ornaments(装饰物) with their own money. Then they returned to the apartment to deliver some holiday cheer. "They hugged the tree," Paramore said. "I was glad to see that this family was going to have something to sit around and use." The police department posted the video on YouTube, hoping to share the happy news and inspire others.    The department has received tons of donations and phone calls from people around the country asking how they can help the family. "We are covered," said Stephanie Slater, public information officer for the Boynton Beach Police Department. "We're asking people to do good in their communities on behalf of our officers. We appreciate it very much that people are talking about this after watching the news on TV because they need to see and need to be reminded that police officers are good guys," she said.
