The last flowers and _4_ came last week, for her 21st birthday. In the card that came with this year's flowers, Mike Sellers told his daughter, “This is my last letter to you until we meet again. Hugh Grant knocks into Julia Roberts and spills orange juice all over her. After it happened, Grant repeatedly says, “I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.”His actions in this scene are very British. If Roberts were from Britain, then she would probably apologize repeatedly as welleven if it were not her fault. But this doesn't happen in the movie, as Roberts is from the US. A report in The Telegraph once said that three quarters of British people apologize when they ran into someone in the streetregardless of whether they are responsible or not. In fact, the British use “sorry” in many situations. For example, if they mishear someone, they say “Sorry?” The person they are talking to will also apologize by replying, “No, I am sorry!” This can go on for up to five minutes as they compete for who is the most sorry. Why are the British so sorry? Mark Tyrrell, a psychology writer in the UK, thinks that their apologetic tendencies are rooted in the British class system. “We say sorry because historically the new middle class in Britain had to apologize for not being the working class, but also for not really being the upper class.” Another theory is that they apologize to avoid conflicts. For example, if they bump into someone, he might get angry. To avoid this, they instantly say “Sorry!”True manners are about being considerate, and today's constant use of apologizing shows that we are perhaps not as thoughtful as we once were. The word “sorry” has lost some of its meaning. Do you see my point? Sorry, it might just be a British thing.1Why does the author mention a scene in the movie Notting Hill at the beginning?ATo give an example of British modesty.BTo introduce different ways of saying sorry.CTo show what kind of men are considered gentlemen in the UK.DTo draw our attention to when and how British people say sorry.2Which of the following statements might Mark Tyrrell agree with?APeople should not apologize if they are not responsible.BAmericans care less about manners than British people.CThat British people apologize so much is linked to the class system.DBritish people care too much about which social class they are from.3What can be inferred from the passage?AIt's unnecessary for British people to be so polite.BThe overuse of apologizing shows Britons are truly sincere.CPeople should give up the traditional use of the word “sorry”DUsing “sorry” more doesn't necessarily mean people are more polite.4What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?ATo explore the best way of saying sorry.BTo explain why the British overuse the word “sorry”CTo show how saying sorry has changed over time.DTo suggest many British people lack traditional manners.一、单词拼写1.prohibited2.adopt3.journalist4.teapot5.labelled6.sneeze7.rewarding二、一句多译1.as large as; larger than2.Whenever I go; No matter when3.too difficult; so difficult that4.People thought; It was thought that5.living there; who are living there三、完形填空1B根据下文对卡片的介绍可知,这是已故的父亲送给贝莉·塞勒斯的卡片,也是她将永远珍惜的卡片。 4A根据上句的flowers and a card to her every year可知,此处指今年送的花和贺卡上周刚收到,故选A项。 故选A项。 Miss you so much daddy并配有一颗紫色的心。故选D项。9A根据空后的the pain of losing a parent可知,此处指人们讲述自己怎样应对失去父母的痛苦,故选A项。deal with意为“应对”;keep out意为“不进入”;carry on意为“继续”;settle down意为“使安静下来”。10C根据空后的she said she became _ after her father's death可知,此处是说贝莉理解人们说的失去父母的痛苦,故选C项。 So now she's studying psychology可知,父亲去世后贝莉变得很难过。 故选A项。 He made people realise that they shouldn't take the people who _ them for granted. look around意为“环顾四周”;stand for意为“代表;象征”;care about意为“担心;关心”;think of意为“想起”。 根据第四段中的“Mark Tyrrell.thinks that their apologetic tendencies are rooted in the British class system.” 根据第四段的内容以及最后一段中的“today's constant use of apologizing shows that we are perhaps not as thoughtful as we once were.”
