Originally, only my in-laws lived there. When they offered us an acre of their land, we jumped at the opportunity to raise our children in the country.Shortly after my husband started work, he learned layoffs often occurred during the winter months. To compensate for the loss of income, he obtained a kennel license to raise and sell registered puppies, something he did throughout his teenage years. The kennel brought in the extra income we needed, and the children loved playing with the puppies. No one else lived in the area, so the occasional barking did not bother anyone. After a couple of years, other families began moving in around us. Each had five acres or more. Quickly, we became friends and enjoyed various celebrations and picnics together, creating many happy memories. The neighbor next to us came a year later. His brother's family lived across the street, and he was happy to be close to them. When they started looking for a spot to build their house, both his brother and my husband reminded him about our kennel. My husband showed him the location of the kennel building so they could find a place to build away from the occasional noise. In the end, they decided to build on a small hill overlooking our house and dog kennel, about 100 feet from our shared property line.By the end of the first year in their new home, the neighbor began complaining about the dogs. My husband talked to him and explained the steps he was taking to mitigate the noise, which included moving some dogs and selling some. Unfortunately, nothing we did improved the situation for them.Over the next year, the neighbor called the dog pound multiDle times to file complaints, and he tried getting our kennel license revoked. Lastly, he called several times, telling us the dogs were now causing his wife's migraine headaches. All this conflict broke my heart.I didn't know what to do 一 until the following Sunday. As I sat in church, listening to our pastor preach from the "Sermon on the Mount J my heart began pounding so hard I thought it might burst out of my body. He read the following Bible verses:"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go, and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:23-24 NIV).It felt like the Lord spoke directly to me through those words, and I knew why. Like an old movie projector, showing slide after slide in rapid speed, pictures flashed in my mind of the ongoing dispute with our neighbor. Now, God was nudging me to apologize. "But, Lord, it wasn't our fault! We were here first J I whined to Him iiUemal/yAs we drove home from church, I told my husband I needed to call our neighbors to apologize that afternoon.Once home, I tried to eat but couldn't. I prayed. I walked over to the phone, thinking about what to say. Then I walked away too scared to call. Finally, with one last desperate prayer, I picked up the phone. With my hands shaking and my heart thumping, I dialed.Thankfully, the neighbor's wife answered the phone. I apologized for all the problems arising from our business and for causing her headaches. T told her we sold several dogs to lessen the noise and moved some. We felt we had tried everything we could to mitigate the sound and make it less stressful fbr her. When I finished, she said, "I am so glad you called. Fve wanted to talk to you, too.”She explained how she knew it was not all our fault. Her husband got overly concerned when she started getting sick. The dogs bothered her occasionally, but she knew they did not cause her medical issues or headaches. She apologized to me, too, for all the distress this situation had caused us.After hanging up the phone, I cried, thanking God for the peace that was now restored through forgiveness. The next day, I was even more thankful fbr this timely conversation because a “For Sale” sign appeared at the end of our neighbor's driveway. It stunned me. I had no idea they were selling their house. Our neighbor never mentioned it during our conversation. What if I had not called the day before and apologized, as I felt compelled to do? Would my apology have sounded sincere if I had waited and discovered they were moving and then called? Would the conversation have yielded the same results? I doubt it.Initiating the conversation challenged me, but it was worth the effort. Forgiving each other not only provided healing to our friendship, but it also led to the resumption of our neighborhood gatherings. That lesson in forgiveness has stuck with me. Many times in life, challenges test our character, urging us to do what is right, not just what feels comfortable. Apologizing is often the right choice, even when we did not start the argument or cause the issue.一 Barbara J. One is in my father hand, the other mine. Both of them remind us of the history.Doing things with my father was always fun due to his rich imagination. I don't recall a time when Dad stood across my path; he always walked beside me, guiding me with his own steps. When, at 10, I announced that I was going to Africa to bring back wild animals, my mother and sisters pointed out my age, the problems of transportation and all such ordinary and unimportant facts. But not Dad. He brought home books about Africa, train and boat schedules, and even some iron bars which we used to build cages for the animals I was to bring back. When the departure day was approaching and I was becoming anxious, my father brought home a newspaper that told of an accident on the railroad that was to take me to Baltimore. This postponed my trip and, by the time the train tracks were repaired, he and I were off on a new and more exciting project. When a neighbor's dog killed my dog Bounce, I was determined to kill that dog. I thought about it day after day, almost making myself ill. "Let's get it done J my father stated unexpectedly in a whisper one evening. I followed him, to discover that he had tied the dog. He gave me a gun, and then stepped back for me to do the work. The dog and I looked at each other. He shook his tail to express friendship. Suddenly the gun was too heavy for me to hold and it dropped to the ground. The dog came up and kissed my hand. The three of us walked home together, the dog jumping in front. No word was ever said about what had happened. None was needed. When President Harding died, the funeral train was scheduled to pass through a town about 20 miles from ours. I wanted desperately to go and see this train, but Mother pointed out that there would be school the next day and that it would be a long trip. That ended the discussion. 注意:1 .所续写短文的词数应为150左右;.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;2 .续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。Paragraph 1 :But when the day arrived, Dad did not forget.Paragraph 2 :Dad put two pennies into my hand and asked me to put them on the rails.心灵鸡汤精选答案【词汇过关】请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。1 .layoff fie nfn. 18.initiate i'n if e t vt .发起19.resumption ri'z/xmpjnn.重新开始【句子学习】请根据中文句子填空。(一)动作描写When they offered us an acre of their land, we jumped at the opportunity to raise our children in the country.当他们提供给我们一英亩他们的土地时,我们欣然接受了在乡下抚养孩子的机会。4. He came to me and, in a voice as near a whisper as his nature would allow, said, “Jim, boy, it's time to see the funeral train? We drove along to the town without talking much. When we came to the railroad station, a half dozen people were talking in soft tones and looking down at the tracks. Suddenly, the funeral train was coming slowly.Paragraph 2 :Dad put two pennies into my hand and asked me to put them on the rails. I did as told and stepped back to hold his hand as the train went past. I could hardly breathe, and so exciting were the sight and sound. After the train left, I got back the two pennies from the tracks. Dad put one in his pocket and I kept the other. For years, Dad and I carried the coins pressed by the weight of history. And the knowledge of what we shared made me feel very close to him.
