Ss develop an interest in English poems.Teaching Focus:Ss get to know about the themes and emotions of each poem, have a basic knowledge of rhyming by analyzing the first poem and pay attention to two figures of speech in the second and third poems, that is, symbolism and metaphor.Teaching Difficulty:1. Ss decide which of the first and second poems describes unhappy love or someone falling out of love.2. Ss find out what kinds of figures of speech are applied to the second and third poems.Teaching Procedure:Step I Lead-in and the Study of Auld Lang SyneHave the whole class read together the fourth poem Auki Lang Syne and try to work out the Chinese version or translation. Then play the song on the computer.1. Have the Ss skim over (he four poems and match (hem with the titles in Activity I on P39. I minutes later, check the answer with the whole class.Step II While-readingHave the Ss read Poem 1 individually and answer the questions below:Who is the poem for?What does this writer want to tell him or her?What does the writer especially love about the person he loved?What feeling might the person (the woman) have in the last paragraph?1. Have the Ss read the rest poems to decide the theme and emotion of each poem in Activity3 on P39 by themselves. After a while, collect the answers from individuals.2. Have the Ss match the poems with the summaries in Activity4 on P40 on their own. Several minutes later, have several Ss report their work before the whole class. One person finishes one item. They should first read out the summary and then give the answer.Step III Study of rhyming in Poem 1Show the poem on (he screen and have (he Ss read aloud the last word in each line to help them find out the rhyming of the poem.1. Play the recording of a native speaker's recitation to music and have the Ss pay attention co the speaker's tones and pauses.Step IV Study of figures of speech in Poem 2 and Poem 3Have the Ss answer the question what roses stand for in Poem 3 to introduce the figure of speech- symbolism.1.
