single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at are research camp outside the polar bear capital of the world-the town of Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerousamazing but also dangerous.Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be photographed from a safe distance. When Im face to face with a polar bear,I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times. As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed and smelled our garlic bread. The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire.He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.Terrified.Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew.We yelled at the bear, hit potshard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air.Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off.Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).I radioed the camp manager for help.He told me a helicopter was on its way,but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived.Making the best of this close encounter(相遇)I took some pictures of the bear.Elli and I feared the fence wouldnt last through 30 more minutes of the bears punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears eyes, but doesnt hurt them.So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫),the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.Q:What was taking pictures of polar bears like? One fall,my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at are descriptionsThen, finally, the bear got angry, rose up on his hind legs, and began to growl. The bear began to chase him and Keesh ran away. But as Keesh ran,he dropped a little round ball on the ice.The bear stopped and smelled it,then swallowed it.This continued, and then the bear suddenly stood upright and roared loudly in pain and ran around wildly, beating its paws madly against its body. After a while the bear grew weak and tired, for he was very heavy and had been jumping around violently. Finally he went off to the ice along the shore, shaking his head slowly from side to side, and sitting down now and then to squeal and cry.-Keesh by Jack LondonThe sun caught the ends of the hairs along his back.Shining black and silky the bear stood on its hind legs, half up,and studied Brain, just studied him, then lowered itself and moved slowly to the left, eating berries as it rolled along, wuffling and delicately using its mouth to lift each berry from the stem, and in seconds it was gone.Gone, and Brian still had not moved. His tongue was stuck the top of his mouth, the tip half out,his eyes were wide and his hands were reaching for a berry.-Hatchet by Gary PaulsenBut then she stopped, turned, and charged straight for me.She was on top of me,biting my arms, shoulders, and backpack. The force of each bite was like a sledgehammer with teeth.Over and over she bit me.After what felt like hours but was merely minutes, she disappeared. She slammed down on top of me and bit my shoulder and arms.Suddenly she stopped. There was dead silence except for the sound of her heavy breathing and sniffing.I could feel her breath on the back of my neck and her front claws digging into my lower back below my pack, where she stood.I could smell the terrible, pungent odor she emitted. For 30 seconds, she stood there crushing memy chest smashed into the ground,my forehead in the dirt. And then she was gone.-The Unbelievable True Story of the Hiker Who Survived Back-to-Back Grizzly Bear AttacksA few minutes later, the bear came back. With two bloodshot and swollen eyes,he let out a deafening roar, charged at the fence and shoved the mesh with his full strength. The fence couldnt help trembling.Moaning and groaning, which deeply wrung our heart. It would have devastated anything in its way and attack us in a few minutes. We have no aternative but to anxiously wait for the helicopter. With a cracking noise, the bear rushed in,approaching us rapidly. We tried pepper spray again, but in vain.Elli and I were forced to flee separately to escape the outrageous claws. At the very moment, the helicopter arrived. With the bear chasing behind,“Elli, come on,”I yelled, attracting the bear to an opposite direction, but unfortunately,I was trapped to a narrow corner, where I could almost hear the gasps of it.At the very moment, several gunshots echoed to scare it off.The bear lifted his face and stared at the giant figure of the helicopter.Slowly,he flinched.Relieved yet enhausted,I climbed into the helicopter, hugging tightly with Elli.It was such a breathtaking experience, but as I developed the film later,it all just became worthwhile.点评:本文通过细腻的描写勾画出了千钧一发之际的惊险,(字数超出规定,不忍删减,当然也会跟学生探讨这个问题);最后“洗出的照片”很完美地回照了前文!Afewminuteslater,thebearcameback.Nosetwitchingandmouthwideopening,heslammedonthebrokenfencewith
