A Study of“A Pair of Silk Stocking”After the class of“A Pair of Silk Stocking”,I got a much more thorough understanding about the content compared to that I gained from my first reading.The four perspectives,feminism,psychological analysis,consumerism and biblical archetype,all arise my interest in the passage,especially the feminism.In this passage,we read a story about a tradional woman Mrs.Sommers,who was a typical sacrifice of the conservative society.At that time,femals were in lower positions compared with males,they needed to stay at home to do housework and take care of the children,the main part of their life must be their husbands and children.Women didin t get any chances to realize their own dreams or just live for themselves.From the passage,we know that Mrs.Sommers lived as other women did in the past,she was always focusing on her family.Even when she got the money luckily,she only thought to use it for her family at the beginning.Until she touched the pair of silk stockings,she changed her mind.I think the silk stockings waked up her self-consciousness to pursue her satisfaction.After buying the stockings,she can t help to stopping spending money for herself.One luxurious item by one,she spent very cent on herself that day.She enjoyed this kind of life and doesnt want to be a self-sacrificing mother any longer on that day,but she is an independent woman pursuing her own pleasure,and living for herself,not for her children and her husband.At the end of the story,she wished that she didn t have to go back to her children.I think that she inhibited her truly desire for too long time,once had she tasted the delicious life style,she lost herself in it.Maybe in the deep part of Mrs.Sommersheart,she had a strong desire for feminism.From the class,I also learn that the writer,Kate Chopin,has a special background which leads to her intense passion of feminism.Her mother,grandmother and great-grandmother all widowed at an early age and never remarriaged.They brought up the children by themselves and didn t depend on men.Grown up under this envorionment,Kate Chopin was also a strong woman.She held the opion that women can do the same good as men in supporting the family and women can also have their rights to live a happy life they like,instead of being slaves for men and children.As a female student,I feel quite fortunate to live in such a highly-developed age,at which females are nearly equal to males,even they are the same in some big modern cities.There are more policies to protect females rights.We get the same opportunity to have education and to compete with males.Most of us will go to the society to work and achieve self-realization after graduating from the school.Some choose to stay at home just of her own free will instead of being forced by the social position and pressure.09 英语 5 班谢白帆22 号
