中考英语复习-七年级短文阅读 5Hao Shuais KitchenDoes your family invite strangers to your house?Hao Shuai often does so.Each month,Haoinvites about 10 strangers to have dinner at his home.So far,he has invited over 2,000 people.Hao comes from Chongqing.Haos father was a cook and his mother ran a food stall for morethan 30 years.“I became interested in cooking at an early age.I always wanted to be a food showhost the idea of inviting strangers fordinner.It is another way to make his dream come true.Hao started the activity named“Hao Shuais Kitchen”last March.He invites strangers from allwalks of life.To make the activity fun and interactive,he asks his guests to cook and do the dishestogether.When they eat,they tell their stories.“Nothing feels better than sharing stories and eating delicious food,”says Hao.“Those storiescould heal a lot of people.”“I felt the kindness of strangers and the beauty of life at Hao Shuais home,”says Liu Jian,one ofthe guests.Hao says he will invite 10,000 people to his home for dinner over the next 10 years.A Green SchoolHuonville High School is in Tasmania,Australia.About 400 students study there.The school isdoing wonderful things to save energy.The main school building looks different from those in other schools.There are solar panels onthe roof.The windows are thick and they can keep the classrooms warm.When it is cold in themorning,students use a special stove to make classrooms warm.The stove doesnt pollute the air.During break time,students ride special bikes to make electricity and then use it to cook food.All the ideas are from Zayed Future Energy Hub.It is a clubhouse in the school.13 students learnhow to save energy there and then they share their ideas with other students.They started manyenergy-saving activities at school and they made this school a better place.So far,they havehelped the school save$44,000.Students are proud of what they do.“Its cool to be a part of Zayed Future Energy Hub.We aremaking our school greener each day,”said a student.A teacher said,“These students are excited about the activities.They also call on other youngpeople to take action for the planets future.Its really great.”Photographys“New Big Five”Lions,elephants,rhinos,leopards and African buffalo are known as Africas“Big Five”.Huntersgave the group this name in the 19th century.They thought those were the most difficult anddangerous animals to hunt on foot.But British photographer Graeme Green thinks its time to give the Big Five a new meaning.Hewants to use photography to show some of the worlds most beautiful animals.Thats why in April 2020,Green started a project the New Big Five.He asked people a question:what five animals would you most like to take a photo of or see in a picture?He wanted them towrite their answers down.More than 50,000 people took part in choosing the New Big Five.The result came out in May 2021.Elephants and lions are still on the list.Gorillas,tigers and polarbears joined the group.They took the place of rhinos,leopards and African buffalo.However,animals in the New Big Five are all in danger.Green hopes the New Big Five can helppeople care about wild animals around the world.Special Rule on EscalatorsIn Japan,many people get hurt as a result of walking on escalators every year.So Saitama,a placeto the north of Tokyo,made a special rule.It doesnt let people walk up and down escalators.From October 1,2021,all escalator riders in Saitama must stand still while the escalators aremoving.The new rule helps to stop people from falling and hurting themselves.People living in different parts of Japan use escalators differently.In some places like Osaka,people stand on the right side of the escalator and walk on the left.But in other places like Tokyo,the right side is used for walking and escalator riders stand on the left.This is not safe whenpeople want to walk on escalators in Japan.The new rule in Saitama tells escalator operators to put up signs near escalators.The signs tellpeople about the rule.Operators will give people warnings if they break the rule,but wontpunish them.Saitama is the first place in Japan to make such a rule.For the Country“We want to buy oranges for experiments.”“For the country?”“Well,you could say so.”“To serve the country,I will donate one box to you”Recently an online chat between a university student and a farmer touched peoples hearts.The farmer,called Chen Kai,has an online shop that sells oranges.He had a chat with a studentfrom Zhejiang University online.He learned that the student and her classmates wanted to buyoranges for experiments.They were finding a way to grow better oranges for the country.Whenhe learned this,he decided to donate one box of oranges to them.“I cant do a lot to help our country,but now if I can,I will do my bit,”said Chen.The nextmorning,Chen first sent the student one box of oranges.Later after learning that they neededoranges of different sizes,he then sent another five boxes.After getting the oranges,thestudent put her online chat with Chen on her schools website.The next day,many studentsflocked to his online shop to buy oranges.“I will feel happy even if you just say hi to me withoutbuying oranges,”said Chen.Doing something kind can bring the world more warmth.Dont you think so?THEME READINGThis Dog Helped Save KoalasMost dogs are good at following simple orders,like“sit down”and“stand up”.But some can doamazing things.Bear,a dog from Australia,is such a dog.He helped save over 100 koalas fromAustralias wildfires in 2019 and 2020.Bear is a six-year-old dog.He is always energetic and loves to play.Bear has a strong sense ofsmell,so he can help to save animals.During the Australian wildfires,he used his special skill tosave koalas.How did he do it?He could smell koala fur.When he found a tree with a koala in it,he would sit in front of the tree.Then people would follow him and save the koala in the tree.Because of what he did,Bear got an animal award last year.The award came from theInternational Fund for Animal Welfare.It is an organization that helps animals around the world.“We think Bear really deserves this award because he is such a good boy in helping us find andsave a lot of koalas”said his trainer,Romane Cristescu.What a helpful dog!
